Mr. Cohen installed a new roof and charged me $3,700 for it. However, the original problem, a leaky rain box which was installed too low, wasn't replaced or corected, and the roof continued to leak. I wasn't aware of it for over a year, because I didn't go into that room until I was finally able to afford the replacement of the plaster board, which was damaged by the initial leaky roof. That was a year after the new roof was installed by Mr. Cohen.
Two weeks later I noticed a new leak on my newly painted wall. I contacted Mr. Cohen as soon as I noticed it, but he didn't answer my calls or emails. I finally called him on someone else's cell phone, which he didn't recognize, so he answered my call. When I asked him to come back and repair the leak, he was furious and blamed me for not calling him earlier!
I reminded him about the ten years warranty he gave me, and demanded that he'll return and fix the problem. When he finally showed up, he smeared asphalt and cement over the rain box, which blocked the rain box even further, and prevented the rain from going down the rain pipe. This, in turn, caused the rain water to stain the new interior wall. The new plaster board is also stained by the water.
I finally hired another roofer, who corrected the problem. The new rain water box and the removal of all the extra cement and tar from the roof near the rain box cost me $400. I contacted Mr. Cohen and demanded that he'll reimburse me for this expense. I have not heard from him, and do not expect to hear from him.
Update: I now realize that Mr. Cohen duped me all along! I never needed a new roof to begin with in 2010. All I needed was a repair to a leaky rain box. Instead, he charged me for a whole new roof, which he laid on top of the old roof, and never repaired the leak. He simply smeared some asphalt around the rain box, and left. By adding a layer of roofing material he caused leakage around the chimney and the two skylights, not only the rain box. He never coated the new roof, either. Once I realized the new roof was still leaking I contacted his office. That was in 2011. However, it took him a year to finally show up to repair the leak in 2012, after I told him I contacted the BBB and the Attorney General. He then made things worse by smearing asphalt over the leaky area, which now blocked the rain box completely. It also cracked one year later, which caused more damage and heavier leaking. I contacted his office immediately when I noticed the new leak, but he ignored me for over a year. I eventually hired someone else to repair this damage in 2013, because I knew that Mr. Cohen will never admit he did me wrong, and would never return to finish the job. Now Mr. Cohen blames ME for being a "terrible home owner" who "doesn't care about her property," because I "did not notice that the leak was still there right after he installed the new roof." He also calls me "difficult," and says that I "want something for nothing." What exactly is difficult about trying to get him to honor his warranty and repair the damages he did to my property? What exactly is the something for nothing? I paid for the new roof, and I expect it not to leak, regardless of when I first noticed the leak. I have ten years warranty on that roof!!! Also, because the drywall in the back room was so badly stained from the original slow leak, there was no way for me to know that the leak, (actually, slow drip), was still there, until AFTER I had the interior drywall replaced, and the wall painted, in 2012. On top of voiding my warranty for hiring someone else to finally correct his faulty roof installation, Mr. Cohen now says that my warranty is voided because I did not have my roof coated within 60 days after he installed it. He was supposed to coat it at the time of his installation, but he never did, and never told me he didn't. My new roof was not protected against the elements at all, and no one told me about it! He also smeared asphalt around my two skylights, chimney, and rain box, instead of sealing them correctly and professionally. BTW, I am in contact with the Pennsylvania Attorney General about this issue, and will sue Mr. Cohen through them. I have already spent over $5,100.00 on that roof in the last three years, which included the installation of a new roof by Mr. Cohen in 2010; replacing the interior drywall and painting the interior wall by Mr. Jose Toro in 2012; and roof repairs and silver coating by Reiter Roofing, INC., in 2013. Mr. Cohen caused most of the damage to my roof. He also duped me into purchasing a new roof, when all I needed was a small repair by the rain box. My "old" roof was only ten years old and has had a fresh silver coating every three years since it was installed. It could have lasted ten more years. The repair to the rain box should have been $500, total.
"In response to the review by [member name removed]: As she stated in her complaint, this roof replacement is now five years old. Also, I told her that the roof should be silver coated (not in our contract), but it never was. As for the claim that I did not answer her calls and was abusive to her are just not true. I answered her call when I was on vacation and the roof was repaired two days after my return. That was roughly 2 years ago. I have done hundreds of flat roofs in my career and have no idea how her roof cracked, probably because it wasn’t silver coated. The proper way to repair a roof leak like this is to use an asphalt patch, which is what I used. I honored the warranty, but she never contacted me about the current leak she says she has and now she wants me to pay for someone else. When she called in the other company to work on her roof, it voided any warranty she had with me. This is common practice. I have been in business for 35 years and have a great reputation. Read the reviews others have given on my website cohencontracting.com or on Networx.com. I stand behind my work, just as I did with [member name removed]. Christopher Cohen"
