Rich had done work for my mother-in-law (lives in separate addition to our house) last Fall, and we and she had been very pleased then with the job he did--that was our first time using his services. During this week of heavy rains, yesterday (May 5), we discovered a pool of water on the cement basement floor, that seemed to originate from under the hot water heater--in the middle of our large basement. Rich came the same day we discovered the water. He diagnosed the problem as coming not from the waer heater itself, but from the gas vent pipe that runs from the water heater to outside--where it exited the house, rainwater was entering and running along the pipe (I think) to pool on the floor. Since the water heater is 10 years old, and the parts on the top were corroded and had left drip-marks all down the sides of the heater, we asked Rich to replace it anyway. He advised us to replace it with an electric water heater, which would save us $400 for a model of the same capacity and efficiency. My husband also wanted the vent removed, since we would no longer need it. The very next day, Rich got quotes for the new electric water heater, picked it up, and installed it. He taped off the vent so no more water will leak in (it's still raining, will continue all week). He took the old water heater with him, and promises to return in 2 days to remove the now-useless venting.
