Filter reviews by service
Couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer about their "service" dept. falling a bit short. Short being outright fraud and deceit which rolled over to the used car lot.
Several years ago, purchased a used car from this dealership for my son for what at the time seemed to be an honest price. Inquired about the service history on the car as well as the maintenance done to get it ready for sale. Also asked about any records of maintenance/repair work done from the previous owner. Of course like all used car lots, they didn't have any "paperwork available from the previous owner" and if they did, they sure weren't going to show it to me. No matter. I had the Carfax report in hand and a general idea of what had been done over the years. Specifically I wanted to know if the timing belt had been changed (costly repair on this particular car) as it wasn't showing on the Carfax and initially they were "not sure if they did it" and would "look into it." Called back the next day and they said they had paperwork verifying the belt HAD been changed in their shop along with a printout of all the rest of the things they had done prior to the For Sale sign hung on car. Cool! Time to go hand over check and take keys. At the time, happy camper.
Now for the real deal. Car, about a week ago or so, was taken into my local mechanic's shop for some routine maintenance/repair work and the fellas spot a small leak coming from the water pump area. The timing belt's right down there next to it so I asked 'em if they could look at the belt while they were in there changing out the water pump. Doug at Fountaindale Auto (Middletown, MD) calls a short while later and tells me it was the original imprinted manufacturer's timing belt still in the car. Whoa!!! Good thing for Fitzgerald's my kid didn't throw a rod thru the engine block. Looking down a repair that size with the age of this car getting up there(a repair mind you that could have been avoided had it happened!) - engine overhaul - big problem! Can you say lawsuit? I can.
Thank goodness Fountaindale Auto in Middletown, MD unlike Fitzgerald's Nissan of Chambersburg is honest an forthright. Would like this car to last a couple more years. Knowing what I know now, the added info would have changed that transaction drastically! Just putting it out there for the rest of you BEFORE you consider buying a used car from this particular dealership. Hopefully things have changed since I was last there. Regardless, you have my tale. Even though it may be in writing from these guys in "service" right before your eyes, have it checked out by YOUR mechanic ahead of time. Do NOT take their word for it, written or otherwise. Might not be worth the paper it's printed on.
examples: on one occasion I was told I needed "battery service" at $109.00. I corrected the " problem" myself in 5 minutes with a wire brush.
On another occasion I was told that I needed transmission fluid changed and filter. This at 60,000 mi. After researching myself I learned that the transmission fluid should only be inspected not changed and this at 100,000 mi.
I believe nothing they recommend .based on past experience
Not only did we pay for the car, we also incurred substantial legal fees required to facilitate the legal ownership of a car we paid for in full, as well as uncompensated time lost from employment to attend the trials.
I want to warn all potential buyers of used cars, especially if purchasing from Fitzgerald Auto Mall, that one would assure seller on-site possession of a clear title prior to handing over any money. According to the Fraud Unit Investigator from the PA State Police, this is a common practice for used car dealerships to not have possession of itles for cars for sale on their lots.
