This was actually a subcontracted job arranged by Carpet Mart of Mechanicsburg, Pa., but the contractor does do jobs outside of work for Carpet Mart. PJ Flooring is owned by Pjer Grbavac, who came to the U.S. from Crotia where he had been a police officer and was wounded twice during the war. Often, struggling through hardship translates to being a hard worker when given the opportunity. His assistant, possibly his son (I didn't ask), initially came to the house to take measurements and provide an estimate. We were thinking about vinyl flooring, but he was honest and recommended against vinyl flooring. After doing more research, I realized he was right if the room floor is subject to direct sunlight and temperatures below 55 degrees F. I could find no support for any kind of vinyl flooring that can be guaranteed under less than minimal conditions, but I appreciated the expertise of the flooring installer and being conscientious with the facts.  After looking at tile and ceramic floors, more common in unheated sun rooms, which were three times as expensive as vinyl, we were not happy with the idea of cold tile that would more easily break a dropped glass, or more likely too injure in a fall. There were no designs that came close to the patterns of vinyl flooring. We had purchased similar kitchen vinyl from Carpet Mart several years ago and it has held up remarkably well. So we stuck to our guns and selected a high quality vinyl with a fiber glass backing. We are taking a calculated risk, but after talking to other people who have vinyl flooring in their sun rooms, we felt better about our decision. No one we spoke to have had trouble with fading or other problems. The sun room, built by PA Sunrooms (Four Seasons), has an R-24 insulated floor and R-14 walls. We have patented, high energy rated windows with excellent filtering of UV light, no heavy traffic from kids, and the room will be used mainly to relax, work on our laptops, or have dinner.  We might consider installing permanent heating, but for now, it is what it is and we're happy with vinyl flooring.
The installers arrived promptly just before 8 am at exactly the time they said they would arrive. Mr. Grabvac noted the room temperature at the time was about 52 degrees and said it would be best if the room was 70 degrees during the installation. With the help of  my room space heater, the morning sun coming through the windows, and the entrance room door off the family room left open to allow warmer air into the room, the sun room was warmed to the desired temperature by the time they glued the vinyl down. While it was warming up, Mr. Grbavac utilized the time efficiently measuring, cutting and installing the wooden 1/4-inch subfloor. His careful measurements insured that the boards fit together perfectly. After quickly installing the sub-floor and sealing the joints, it took very little time to unroll, fit, trim, and glue down the vinyl. The floor looks perfect and is exactly how we imagined it would look.
PJ Flooring was professional, courteous, and did a great job.
