I have a long driveway, 250 feet, and we live at the end of cul-de-sac. There has been a septic system on the property since it was built some 55 years. The septic worked perfectly all the time and I would get it cleaned out every 3 years. No problems. Why change? Because I'd like to sell the house at some point and everyone said that selling a house with a septic system would take longer.
I hemmed and hawed, talked to a few plumbers, including Tommy Feehan, and did nothing for about a year. Just thought about it and did some research with the county about replacing the old septic system with a new one. Finally I made a decision to go with public sewer and called Feehan Plumbing, who had seemed like the most intelligent of the guys I had talked to.
Tommy came out and re-walked the land. We talked about the process involved. He got back to me with a price in about 2 weeks and started about 2 weeks later after he had lined up the guys with big machines and gotten the permits. I was fascinated and was there every day to see what was going on. The process involved digging to find the septic connection between the house and septic system, digging a hole about 8' deep to accommodate the pump and the connection to the control box what would be inside the house, putting the pump in place, and tunneling from the connection of the public sewer in the center of the cul-de-sac down the driveway to the connection point with the pump. In the process, the septic tank was emptied and filled in with gravel and dirt. The control box was installed and hooked up and tested inside the house. The most fascinating part was the tunneling under the driveway, designed to be done without breaking the surface of the street or the driveway! And the new pipe ended up exactly at the entrance to the pump! At the end the big hole had to be refilled in and grass seed spread around to make it look like the rest of the lawn.
I called Tommy after an especially heavy rain which revealed that the edge of the hole, where it met the pathway, had some weak spots where someone could break their ankle if they stepped there. I asked him to fill those in. it took him a few weeks but he got it done.
I would recommend Tommy Feehan for a big job like this. He had the right contacts, knew the right people to call to help him, and in general it went very well.
