Our dog Ranger is aging and a little testy. Rather than asking us to lock him up for the duration of construction(which we would gladly have done), Mark Petka won him over by bringing Ranger a biscuit each morning. Carl Petka kept us on schedule with reminder calls about counter top color and paint color before starting the job. Our construction occurred in two phases, about three weeks apart. Phase I was conversion of a tiny cluttered space into a functional office/drafting room that at least two people could use at one time without sitting on each other. At the same time, this room needed to have LOTS of storage space. (All that clutter has to go somewhere, right?) With the Petkas help, we designed a room with floor to ceiling cabinets on one side and a long countertop on the other, with cabinets above the countertop. The counter needed to be constructed of indestructible material, as my teen daughter is an aspiring artist and animator, and is also cyber-schooled. We chose Magenite (like Corian). The original color we selected for the drafting countertop was unavailable, so several telephone calls were required before the material could be ordered. However, since Carl had called us for the color choice well in advance of the construction start date, we had time to dither over a second color choice without pushing back the start date or delaying the project. Carl and Mark built the cabinets from scratch, and they are beautiful! As the job progressed (it took about two weeks) at times there were decisions that had to be made that we simply had not considered, such as whether we wanted adjustable or permanent shelving. The Petkas asked their questions in advance of the need for an answer, so that we had time to think about it before deciding without holding up the work. Because of their extensive experience in interior home renovation, the Petkas were able to make suggestions that significantly enhanced the appearance and functionality of the space, such as adding under-cabinet lighting and extra outlets. Although the Petkas themselves do basic electrical work (such as moving our thermostat from one side of the wall to the other, as they did for us) this required an electrician. However, no need to panic(OMG, where are we going to find an electrician on such short notice!), because their electrician came all the way out to Lincoln University when requested and completed the work in a timely manner so that general construction was not delayed. At the end of the project my husband and I could not believe the transformation in the room. The Petkas literally made something from nothing, and in two weeks solved storage and work space problems that had plagued us for over three years.
Next came the installation of hardwood floors in our kitchen and what had been and eating area and family room. Since we had delayed making the decision to proceed with this phase of the work, we had to wait a few weeks for the Petkas to have the time for our job in their schedule. This was just as well because it took us about three weeks to get the office completely set up and get ready for Phase II construction. The largest room on the main floor consisted of the kitchen and eating area with a linoleum floor and a carpeted family room area. Our goal was to convert this busy and cluttered room, (which looked very small with all that furniture and different flooring) into a single light, bright airy room that flowed from kitchen to eating space, inviting both relaxed family dinners and more formal dining. This would free the current formal dining room,( a fairly large and almost completely unused room) to become a comfortable family room, thus giving us functional living space throughout the first floor. (Space, the final frontier!) There were many challenges to achieving this goal. The first was matching the previously existing hardwood floor in the hallway and the office.. Another challenge was trimming the hardwood so it conformed to the irregular shape of the hearthstones. The final challenge was working around US and all our STUFF. Since the original floor was linoleum, the appliances were sitting on top of the linoleum, which had to be removed. In addition, we had a lot of furniture. Far more than could fit into the soon-to-be-family room, which already housed all the dining room furniture. We also have more chachka than a Hallmark store. Carl and Mark patiently moved things out of the way, things we did not move because we had looked at the stuff so long we literally didn't see it anymore! Meanwhile, our two cats and Ranger(the testy dog) supervised everything from underfoot. Part of this job required removal of a light fixture, moving a ceiling fan, and moving the switches that control the gas fireplace. Despite the fact that I forgot to call the electrician (!) he was able to accommodate us and came out to do the needed work in time for Carl and Mark to patch the holes in the ceiling and wall, again without delay in the construction schedule.
The Petkas used top quality materials and craftsmanship to create gorgeous cabinets with multiple adjustable shelves in the office. They were able to match our existing hardwood floors exactly so that transition from hallway to great room is seamless. The Petkas were able to create a perfect edge where the hardwood floor met the stone hearth (see photo)). If you want a quality product, delivered on time and on budget, hire the Petkas.
came home they told me what they would be doing the next day, and it was always done. They are both personable and professional. Their work is of the highest quality. The kitchen they delivered was beautiful and functional.
My experience was exactly as promised. They showed up promptly each morning, worked a full day every day, and the quality of their work was very high (across all aspects of the project). The project did run longer than originally anticipated, but that was largely because of additional requirements I added when they arrived the first day. Overall, their estimates (time and money) were fairly accurate.
Bottom line: They are truly old school guys, and I would recommend them regardless of the size of your project. And I will certainly be giving them the chance to bid on my next projects as well.
