"Fantastic! All projects were done in a quick and timely manner. A year later and the yard has been nice, solid, and mud-free. For the driveway drain Joe held off, waiting for a few heavy rains then came up to view what was happening. The area outside the garage had been turning into an ice skating rink. Now with a side and cross-driveway drain/drywell the icing has significantly gone down. We do have need for more projects and will be using them, was so happy with the results and personal care there is no need to look elsewhere."

"Karp Excavating did a super job clearing some land for us. Installed a driveway and leveled a pad site for a pole barn. They were timely and professional. We were very happy with the work. The barn started and I needed stone. I called and with in 1 hour I had two triaxle loads of stone. Zoe the dog was also there. She is the project manager. Haha"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can hydroseed with a garden hose, but you’ll need a tank or other large vessel for mixing the slurry, then a pump to send the slurry through the hose for spraying. Making your own hydroseeding unit can work, but it’s not usually worth the effort and supplies unless you already have them.

Yes, if you are using rocks to form a pathway or driveway, it’s a good idea to first install landscape fabric before layering in your rocks. Landscape fabric is your first line of defense against unwanted grass and weeds on your rocky surface.

Yes, you can absolutely transplant bushes instead of removing them completely. The success depends on the size of the bushes, their age, and the transplanting season. Ideally, transplant during the dormant season (late fall or winter). Dig out the entire root system in one piece, fill the new hole with fresh soil and mulch, and water thoroughly after planting.

Yes, rock gardens do need water. That said, they typically require less regular watering and, instead, more occasional, deep watering since the rocks trap moisture for longer than mulch. Make sure you don’t water your rock garden too much during the winter.

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.
