Another example of this selling pressure occurred this past summer when one of cats was diagnosed with diabetes. We were sold this ridiculously expensive blood glucose meter made by Abbot Labs especially for animals. We were charged $190 for the meter and a starter kit of lancets and test strips. Anyone who has diabetes knows that these meters are often free or at a nominal cost to encourage additional supply purchases later-- the old razor and razor blades marketing strategy. We were also told that we could get a rebate on the meter if we traded in another meter animal or human. Well it turns out that you had to buy additional supplies from the vet to be eligible for the rebate and we were not told this. I did some research on the internet and found the supplies at a 40-50% lower price at diabetes supply houses. The point of all this is that the hard press on selling has really turned us off and we are actively looking for a new vet for our cats. I have to believe that they are pressuring their vets to do all of this selling as every vet we come across pretty much has the same sales pitch. Up until the time of the expansion they never practiced this marketing.
It always go great. It's nice to see how they have grown since I moved up here 7 years ago and started there. It was a normal office then, dated and nothing special. Now it is all new, enlarged with separate areas so dogs do not need to contact each other (and fight) in the waiting room, and well appointed with state of the art throughout.
Obviously they are successful. I like Dr. Ortiz but everyone there is good.
As an example of their competence and expertise, I needed papers to take my dog on vacation with me out of the country. I was a little unclear what I needed. Wright hooked me up! The PA State head of the Dept. of Agriculture had to sign off on the paperwork to go to this country we were heading to the following week. The vet at Wright knows them and called them right up and took care of it without any red tape or delays as would have been expected. The price was not bad for the whole process, maybe $60. They are a large enough practice that they are known and have enormous resources and knowledge. I would and do trust them with our family members.
They are not cheap but I can't imagine going elsewhere to save $10.
I take my dog to the Petco clinic for shots sometimes for standard boosters.
However, my biggest concern is that the staff messed up our prescription not once, but twice!! The first time was the most serious error. They put the wrong label on the medicine for the eye and the ear. If I hadn't noticed the error, it could have seriously harmed our cat. I noticed because the box for the one said "For ears only" while the instructions on the printed label said to put in the eye. I double checked by looking up the name of the medicine online to verify. The second time, I went to pick up refills and they had the wrong medicine again. It wasn't labeled incorrectly, but the medicine they had in the order was for the eye instead of for the ear. This is why I gave the rating of 'C' for professionalism. The staff should not "rush" through the process for prescriptions as this could result in the worst outcome for someones beloved pet if a mistake is made.
Lastly, we also find the pricing to be somewhat on the high side. It did not take much for us to rack up nearly a $1,000 bill for our cat.
Eighteen years ago I presented him with a young Pionus parrot who began developing odd, unrelated, chronic medical issues. It began with heart murmur, then skeletal/calcium, then liver and kidneys in the end. Long story short, Dr. Wright spent fifteen years fighting for our bird’s life. Please read on --- Dr. Wright is a highly-educated, well connected and well known vet in avian circles. He regularly attends avian medical conferences across the country, and for years, he presented our bird’s data to some of the best avian vets in the country. No one could figure out what was wrong. But by his talents and monitoring, he got her fifteen years of life. When she passed, he sent autopsy samples to one of the top bird pathologists in the country, and finally we had our answer --- auto-immune disease, something that has never been well-studied, or documented in birds. Our bird should have been dead by the age of one, and I believe she well might have been if not for Dr. Wright. If anyone doubts the veracity of my words, just ask the vets there about our baby girl, Corazon.
More recently, five of our birds showed strange, low-level problems on their blood-work. Again Dr. Wright investigated, finally narrowing it down to a low-level contaminant in our well-water, that was not affecting humans, but could have eventually killed our birds.
I also know that Dr. Wright works on wild birds as well, including eagles, hawks, you name it. Zoos seek this man’s consultation. In short, to any bird owners out there, this is absolutely where you need to go. Furthermore, I have watched him further educate the other bird/avian vets who work with him. His impressive knowledge is being passed on, thank God, and any of the vets in his employ can access his knowledge. I have an almost-hour-long drive to reach this place, but I would trust no one else with our birds.
The woman did X-Rays on him and told me it did not appear to be a blockage, which is what I was afraid of. She sent him home with medication for something to do with his pancreas that she had suspected was the problem.
He seemed to get better but not quite close to something normal, then he collapsed. This was in the time span of maybe 3 days. I had to rush him back there, I was 8 months pregnant and I had to get someone to come carry him to my car to rush him to the vet.
The doctor on duty told me to go home he would do everything he could to see what was wrong and call me with his findings.
I went home hysterical.
He called me about a hour later, he said he had reviewed my dogs previous Xrays and he had no idea how the previous person there did not see the blockage, he said it was clear as day.
He told me, if he thought my dog would survive he would be in surgery right now and that it was too late.
He was clearly angry that this was because of someones oversight. You go to a place like this because you want to trust them, you want to believe they know what they are doing - one mistake takes your pets life. One oversight, can be the only chance you had.
I was devastated, it is 4 years later and I am still devastated. I adored that dog like he was a family member. I trusted the wrong people.
A week later I got a bill for over $600, I was shocked. They were lucky I was not suing them. I called and wrote, I got a response from the woman at the practice saying the vet who worked on my dog was no longer there - he must have quit after this ordeal, so she had no way to validate what I was saying, that is really a load of bologna.
So here I sit with that on my credit because I flat out refuse to pay a practice for their ignorance.
They lack morals.
I hope one day more people will come forward and this place will be held accountable for their actions.
