After looking at this more, then they changed their mind and said it was the fan motor that was bad, and for the cost of repair I should consider getting a completely new AC unit (mine is 10 yrs old). This is where things continued to get complicated. I did talk to Marty who was very nice and knowledgeable and who is in charge (he did not actually come to my home). I heard about the changes in coolant, and better efficiency of a new unit, etc. So this was heading towards getting a new unit but this was tied into a 2nd furnace in the attic. Marty thought it was just an air handler based on what his guys told him (somehow the repair guys who looked at it didn't realize it was a full gas furnace, strange to me). After showing him some pictures and reading off the serial number, he said that if we replaced the AC unit, we'd have to replace the furnace too. Again I heard the line that the furnace was nearing end of life at 10 yrs, despite the fact that it works fine. The project was now getting more and more expensive, well over 10,000.00.
I started to feel uncomfortable and got a second opinion from an independent guy who does HVAC work on his own. He said that these guys put in the wrong capacitor, and that a fan motor repair really isn't expensive. He replaced the fan motor and new correct capacitor for 300.00 and that included labor. It worked perfectly fine the rest of the summer. It makes me a little sick to think about how much I could have spent for what probably wasn't needed when a minor repair was fine. I don't think Marty or his crew did anything wrong, they were just a little more eager to do the "big job" than I was.
