Tom and his team were very professional during the initial meeting and during the paving work. I appreciate them clearing the fill they removed to level the driveway...not much remained when they finished the work except a smooth driveway. We are very happy with the result.
They only critical feedback is the number of calls it took to schedule a meeting, which I found from other paving contractors, as well. I fully understood it was the end of the season and I'm sure all were very busy.
In the end, we are very excited for our new driveway and would use Hick's Paving in the future.
2. It took a few days until someone came to give me an estimate. (I called ~9 contractors and I managed to get a total of three quotes ranging from $12,900 to $17,500)
3. I was told I had received a favorable price because there was another sizable job close by and they would try to couple my job with the other one (in regards to timing). Their price was the lowest.
4.The son (Charlie) was the person who showed up to give me the quote. I'll admit, he was very nice, but he seemed like he was selling it a bit and since he was on the younger side, I was a little apprehensive. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about, but contractors saying one thing and doing something ?less? when it came time to do the actual work have burned me in the past. I had some fear that might happen in this case, as well. (it sounded a little too good)
5. I selected them to do the work. When I tried to get in contact with them to discus scheduling, it took a couple calls. The desire to couple my job with another job didn't quite work out as planned, not surprisingly. Some circumstances are out of their control... After a week of bad weather, they showed up 1.5 weeks later than originally planned. (again, under the circumstances, I didn't think that was bad.)
6.The night before the work was to be performed, Charlie showed up to discuss my expectations/details for the scope of work. The project was a little tricky since the parking area in front of the garage slopes towards the garage and parts of the driveway had a bad pitch that needed to be fixed.
7. On the day of the work, a large crew showed up with a surprising amount of relatively new equipment. They were very eager to make sure our needs were met and that we would be happy with the outcome. Again, in the past other contractors not delivering on their promises have disappointed me. Being the low bidder, I feared they would skimp on the stone, skimp on the asphalt and/or not do a good job with the grading. I was more than pleasantly surprised. They spent a significant amount of time making sure the grading was perfect so the water would drain away from my garage, and in one section of the driveway they had to add 8-12 inches to get the pitch just right. (my property is all on a slope) They laid down fresh stone and then paved the driveway with a generous 3" of asphalt. I could not be happier with the quality of work they performed! They had a hard working, friendly crew. I would definitely hire them again!
The details: Tom Hicks gave me an estimate for a residential driveway paving in August, 2015. For five weeks I tried to get a contract so that he could begin the work before October. I made arrangements with him NINE times to come up with a contract ?
each and every time he broke the appointment and provided a lame excuse ? ?shorthanded today?, ?not in the area?, ?how about next Monday??, etc., etc. Well, on that ?next Monday? I asked my wife to leave work early so that she could be home to sign the contract Tom promised to deliver. Guess what? ? HE NEVER SHOWED, and worse, HE NEVER CALLED! The next day I called his office and spoke to his wife ? she told me she would call him right away and get back to me within 15 minutes. Guess what? ? SHE NEVER DID! The whole operation is a dog and pony show, nothing but smoke and mirrors. These guys are your typical ?I PROMISE to do the work, BUT NEVER WILL? contractors. Needless to say, I?d advise any who?s looking for an honest and reliable driveway contractor to look elsewhere! Run, don?t walk, away from Tom Hicks!!!
My husband and I received several estimates to get our large driveway paved. We agreed on Hicks Paving for the job as the price was extremely fair and reasonable and we trusted they would do a good job. Tom was responsive from the very beginning. He always answered our calls or promptly returned them. This is one professional Outfit and we were highly impressed with the crew and the equipment. I especially like that it is a family run business and they all "get their hands dirty". Tom and his crew were incredibly professional, helpful, and punctual and most importantly, the work is beautiful. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone.
I was placed on the list and due to the nature of there business, communication was slow but not unexpected due to the volume of the work especially in the paving season. They never forgot me and when they were in my area came over and did a spectacular professional top noch job. They were clean and neat in demolition and the finished product was amazing and race car track worthy. They resloped the driveway, added additional material to the sides and worked around a tree, the house foundation and retaining wall. It was flawless especially around the wall and sidewalk. It exceeded my expectation in many ways, its was a amazing job and I would highly recommend to other homeownes and buisnesses. Tom Hicks the owner was involved in the entiie process and is a gentlemen and professional paver. His experience and knowledge in this area is second to none as he explained to my a novice all about this process. He did not make me feel uneducated or silly for not understanding this process or its maintenance. I felt as a partner in the construction project although my contribution was writing a check. I am not a friend or a family member to Mr. Hicks and this was the first interaction we ever had but I can tell you I would not get any paving work done in the future without having Hick's on my team. If you use Angie's list for any recommendation or review I can attest to my experience with this firm. He doesn't pay for reviews as some other may or buy advertising to put him on the top of the list but if reviews matter, take mine to heart. If you live in the Lehigh Valley Area you can swing by my place and see the work preformed, and I truly hope this earns him more business as his work deserves his continued success.
He did and the price was cheap but the driveway still looked good?????
Little did I know he was what they call a "gypsy"-and when we had the first rain the driveway seem slick ??
When we had a little snow 3-5 inches and we went to shovel '"LOOK Out" we had a very slippery driveway / skating rink!
From that point on the driveway just seem to get more slick. I later to came to find out the sealer was poor quality cut with gasoline and applied improperly .
So I called different paving contractors ;most seem very indifferent or did not wish to be bothered or would not even give any help or information to help my problem. Some never called back ,others hung up [business must be good ] !
I finally came to Hicks Paving-who was very sympathetic and understanding to my problem as far as someone slipping and falling and suing us. Charlie Hicks gave me 3 options which would help remedy my situation. I chose what would be the more expensive but in the long run a more practical move.
He promised to do the work before the weekend and bad weather set in-saying he would call and give me a time and date.
Good to his word, he called and set me up for the next day and time..
He and his crew arrived on time ,did the job better then I had hoped and cleaned up as if they were never there .
I would highly recommend Hicks Paving for price .service and workmanship.

Hicks Paving is a family business, that's been run by 3 generations of their family. They had the experience needed for this job.
Hicks Paving: laser-measured our relatively level areas to assure proper water drainage; completely re-stoned and replaced several sections; retained sizable sections that were still solid (thus saving us a ton of money); milled a 30 foot long 12and quot; wide strip in one section to repair a long, deep crack; dug out a 10 foot by 30 foot section and filled it with stone and a rough grade of asphalt; repaired 2 berms and added 2 more new ones; repaired 2 drainage grate areas; milled and filled in an overly deep swale at the bottom of the driveway; did a precision leveling course of thin asphalt over almost the entire driveway; and they then applied, over the entire driveway, a heavy tack coat followed by a resurfacing coat of 2 to 3 inches (after rolling) of 9.5mm grade asphalt. Upon completion, the vast majority of our driveway now had asphalt 3 to 5 inches thick -- and Hicks Paving gave us a 2-year warranty covering all of their work.
Before hiring Hicks Paving, I received estimates from several paving companies. Hicks wasn't the cheapest nor were they the most expensive. But I hired them because I thought they would deliver the best quality work and the best value for the money spent. And that's exactly what we received.
Overall, we found Hicks Paving to be a pleasure to work with; extremely professional and competent; they were obsessively focused on customer satisfaction; they took great pride in their workmanship; their paving equipment was state-of-the-art; and they finished the job in the time-frame promised and at the exact price they quoted us. They did an absolutely incredible job on our very challenging driveway!
The Driveway looks great.
