He was early, on time; showed up right away It was something really simple and I forced a $20 on him but he didn't want to take it. My fan was just stuck, he was in and out in 20 tops.

Service provider's bid was lower than others for the same product. He was cooperative and responsive to customer's needs. Very pleasant person, seems to have a lot of integrity, with whom it was a pleasure to do business.

I called Gregg to schedule a service call because my 14 year old Carrier A/C was struggling to maintain temperature. Gregg recommended that I replace the A/C cooling coils at a cost of $800, which were probably leaking, since I've needed Puron every year for the last 4 years. I concurred. Gregg called early in the morning to let me know he was on his way and he arrived with his son a little later that morning. They started to work immediately. They were very quiet, efficient, and professional. They replaced my pitted and corroded A/C coiling coils with a new unit, recharged the system with Puron, and cleaned up. I inspected the work and found the work impeccable. The A/C unit was running perfectly and the service location was cleaner than when they arrived. The invoice was for $800, exactly as quoted. I've been using this company for over 14 years and they continue to impress me with their knowledge, professionalism, and superior workmanship.

Absolutely fabulous service. I first met Gregg a few months ago, when I purchased a Nest thermostat and needed some help with installation. He was recommended by the Nest website, and was very pleased with his friendliness, promptness, and reasonable pricing. When my heating stopped working recently, I knew exactly who to call, and was happy to see that Gregg was equally proficient in identifying the problem and repairing it promptly at a great price. Again, he was extremely friendly and professional, and is extremely reasonable with his charges, which are very well explained. I will be using him for all of my future HVAC needs. Highly recommended! A++++!

I called Gregg several weeks ago to report a problem with my air conditioner/furnace. The furnace and ducts were vibrating and very noisy when the furnace fan was operating. He came out the same day and diagnosed the problem as a bad blower fan. He ordered the part and it was delivered within a week or two. After receiving the part, Gregg called me to check the exact model number of the furnace to verify that he had received the correct part. Gregg scheduled the repair the same day and was very cooperative to accomodate my schedule which required me to be out of the house for a few hours. Gregg and an associate showed up at the expected time, a little after noon, with the replacement part. They removed the unbalanced and noisy fan, which required considerable disassembly of various parts of the furnace, installed the new fan, reassembled the furnace, and verified proper operation of the furnace with the new fan in a little more than an hour. As always, Gregg and his associate were very friendly, courteous, and competent. The furnace worked fine and was very quiet with no more vibration. Gregg showed me the old part and how the blades on the blower fan moved to cause it to be out of balance, thus confirming his diagnosis. All old parts were removed and the furnace area looked like it was brand new after the repair. The cost of the repair was $296 which is well below what I expected considering the two trips to my home, the cost of the blower fan, and the cost to install it. This is always the case with Gregg's Heating and Cooling, his company is the best and his prices are the best.

While he was looking at it, he located some corrosion on a pipe and was able to replace it. He was punctual, and I was pleased with the service.

I met Justin and Greg Kuban at the 2008 Pittsburgh home show, and decided to select them as my contractor. At first I was happy with Justin. He seemed like a cool guy, talked a good game, and I was comfortable with their estimate. It's a good thing that he talks a good game, because his play is sub-par at best. In short, working with Gregg's was a 30 month struggle, and I wouldn't recommend them.
My home needed significant renovations (including central air) in 2008, I didn't know anything about A/C, and I traveled for work. My tenants were the only ones home to supervise the work. The the quality of work probably had to do with the "while the cat's away the mice will play" scenario.
Granted, this is a tough house to renovate, being built in the 1800's and laid out in a tough way. However, the quality of the work that was done was mediocre at best. Many corners were cut (as well as many holes through my hardwood floors and trim), and it took 3 full years to get everything close to right. Even after the repair there are still gaps and unsealed ducts, dings and scratches in the hardwood floor, and ~ 30 c.f. of debris and other trash that they left behind. Long story short - Don't use Gregg's for renovation work, or if you don't know anything about HVAC. Their work is closer to a Picasso then a Monet.
Included below is a summary of issues I experienced with the AC and the installation, and a history of calls.
Overview of issues experienced before the final repair:
#1 Poorly designed
#3 Poor customer service

Long story short - Don't use Gregg's for renovation work, or if you don't know anything about HVAC. Their work is closer to a Picasso then a Monet.
Included below is a summary of issues I experienced with the AC and the installation, and a history of calls.
Overview of issues experienced before the final repair:
#1 Poorly designed
- Duct work twists and turns resulting in loss of air velocity / cooling power (fixed)
- Duct work is poorly positioned, resulting in excessive loss of closet space. In one case the installers actually put a return over a live pendant light - the light bulb was still in the duct until the final repair. (fixed? Gregg's boxed in the return, so I can't tell)
- 2nd floor doesn't cool unless AC is set very cold and fan is set to always run. At 72 degrees, (76+ upstairs) it cost 60+ KWH/day to run the AC. Costs are prohibitive (fixed - can keep AC on at 76 with a floor fan and it's better)
- There are no in duct louvers (manual or electronic) to control proper flow of air…the only controls are at the floor vents themselves. (not fixed)
- Duct work is bent and crimped around openings, and registers don’t fit well. As a result, closing the registers to help with airflow in other rooms results in loss of pressure from air blowing into basement (Not fixed)
- Ducts aren't sealed and leak air (not fixed)
- Installers cut holes through wood floors first, leaving damage that is visible outside the edges of the registers (not fixed)
- Returns are not placed where agreed and can’t be moved due to holes in wood floor ( some fixed after 3 years)
- Return on 1st floor has 1+ cm gap that pulls air from joist space full of dust instead of 1st floor. (not fixed)
- Labor is poorly supervised and inexperienced (Fixed? Gregg did the repairs himself)
#3 Poor customer service
- Justin Cuban was either unable or unwilling to identify issues such as the twisting ducts impacting air velocity. Multiple other contractors pointed it out to me ("hey...do you have AC issues upstairs? That duct run is a big problem...").
- Offers to fix problems were rescinded as “too costly” after being made
- Suggestion was to “run the AC unit on full fan all the time.” Based on research proper installation of returns should resolve the problem, but he was too cheap to provide a legitimate suggestion. A simple Google search revealed that I should have had 4 ceiling returns upstairs instead of 1 floor return (this was the final outcome of repairs)
- Gregg’s seems to be taking an approach of “see if the customer goes away.”
- I still can't get them to come back and finish painting, finish repairing a hole in my hardwood floor, or pick up the giant pile of debris and materials from the May 2011 repair. I probably wouldn't have written this review if they had.
- Didn't initially pull an hvac permit because they were too busy
- Got a permit for “existing duct work” even though 90% of the duct work in the house was installed by gregs (at Justin’s decision). This is most likely due to skate for the installation issues.
History of my experience with Gregg's
- April / May ’08 – Walk through project with Justin Kuban. Identify where ducting and returns will be run. Show him where a trunk line can be run in the attic roof ridge, giving him access to provide AC to all rooms in house. Justin also insists that AC air handler unit should be installed in basement instead of upstairs, and claims he can do a regular duct system as well as a high pressure system. Access is available to roof ridge by simply unscrewing un-mudded drywall sections.
- June ’08 – AC installed, Informed that Job is “complete” and paperwork is faxed for signature. Pressured to sign off even though I was unable to review work (was working out of town).
- July ’08 – Upon inspection, turns out that Greg’s does not follow original ducting plan and is unable to get vent to bathroom upstairs. Demo work on house is shoddy, floors are cut in wrong places (appears workers cut down through wood floors instead of up through ceilings). Also experiencing multiple airflow and ducting issues. Ducting in one room is fixed.
- August ’08 – AC does not cool upstairs – have to run with additional window AC unit for cooling.
- 9/22/08 – Walk-through with Justin from 7:00 – 7:30 AM where we discuss installing dampers, extending air return to get ceiling air, etc. Also discuss and address numerous air leaks in system that are reducing pressure. Justin’s crew tapes and insulates visible leaks)
- 9/08 – 12/08 – Upstairs of house is refinished
- 12/17/08 – called and tried to fix issue
- 1/26/09 – Called Justin again to follow-up
- April ’09 – Justin recommended whole hose fan / running sheathing up chimney as alternatives to fixing the problem. Informs that “electronic” dampers were not included in price and moving the return will not resolve the upstairs heating problem. No mention made of putting in manual dampers of other fixes that local HVAC professionals have recommended.
- Spring ’09 – Justin’s team attempts to run bathroom vent, but doesn't check measurements correctly despite having accurate floor plans. They cut a 4’x2’ hole in upstairs bedroom, remove floor plate in wall, and put hole through first floor ceiling before catching their mistake. Informed by Justin “I didn't think your floor plans were correct. I figured the walls were aligned”. Gregg's workers kicked out of house to avoid further damage until an alternate plan could be identified - they never came back to fix the hole (I had to pay out of pocket to repair it).
- May ’09 – No reply from Justin on fan pricing
- 6/18/09 – (after 2 month delay) reneged on whole house fan due to cost - $1500. Offered to extend the return to the ceiling instead. Unacceptable based on the poor work / damage they've done to other areas of the house
- 6/22 – Replied back that solution was unacceptable, given that Greg had stated it wouldn't be sufficient
- 6/24/09 – Requested Refund / credit for 30% of job given that ½ the house will not remain cold. Justin was going to follow up with Greg.
- 1/20/10 – Still no response. Informed Gregg's that I would file complaint with Angie's List and BBB
- 1/26/10 – Justin replied that Greg would be in touch within a few weeks

Justin did a great job and I was very pleased with the results. Both times, Justin responded quickly and did a great job trouble shooting the source of the problem. He kept me informed and I never felt like he was trying to rip me off. Just the opposite...he seems to approach the repair as if he is trying to save you money. He is respectful and honest, and he explains what he is doing and why. I will continue to use Gregg's Heating for all my HVAC needs.

They did the job in one day, but they forgot about some of the things we added in the contract and had to go out and buy necessary parts during the day. Quality of work was decent but not top notch. Had to have them come back and install additional hangers to eliminate a squeak in the PVC exhaust pipe where it rubbed on joist. Cleanup after the fact was good, but not great - they left some metal debris in driveway and did not reattach cable TV lines to side of house.
