O?Brien?s Moving and Storage
12/13/2015
Missing Jewelry!!!
My wife and I hired O?Brien?s Moving and Storage (associated with Allied Van Lines) for a local move in suburban Philadelphia. Their salesman came, was terrific, and gave us an estimate which seemed very reasonable.
On moving day, two trucks with 5 movers arrived on time and began to pack up our house. The movers were a little rough around the edges but seemed like good guys. At their request, we bought them breakfast about 10 am. The move was slower than we expected and, after a call to our salesman, they sent two additional movers to speed things up. The movers were a bit forward, asking for pieces of furniture that they liked and hinting that we should pay for lunch as well. One repeatedly reminded me that it was, ?Big Tip Wednesday?. They also advised me that when they unloaded, they worked better with beer. After multiple, not so subtle hints, I went out and purchased a 30 pack of beer for them. The total job took about two hours longer than estimated and cost me an additional $500. I also tipped them $500. Then they asked for beers for the road and took the rest of the 30 pack as they drove off in Allied Vans.
The next morning, my wife looked for some jewelry (about $13,000 in rings) that she had, mistakenly, left in a dresser. It was gone. We looked all through the dresser, the house, called the company, and then the Police.
Other than my family, the only people with access to that dresser were the employees of O?Brien?s Moving and Storage. After many phone calls, a supervisor called me back and advised me that we should not have left the jewelry in the dresser and that, based on the insurance by weight; we would likely be reimbursed a dollar or two. They did not seem very concerned at all.
Do not trust this company. The initial professional estimate and sales pitch is a façade. The actual moving experience is not good. It was a mistake to leave that jewelry in the dresser and a bigger mistake to hire O?Brien?s Moving and Storage. It?s hard to believe that a large company like Allied Van Lines associates themselves with these people.
When they got to the new house, we again walked them through explaining what each room would contain. They appeared to understand again. Maybe because it is such hard work and they were tired they became illiterate and not knowing where anything should go. We gave them drinks and breaks on several occasions and they took some on their own. We don't mind that at all. We had planned to get them lunch but they stopped on their way to the new place.
We had 4 men carrying/hauling five/six boxes specifically labeled coming and asking where it goes. "What does it say" was our constant reply. We would have to look at every box to assist them to different areas.
The biggest problem was they started appearing with items off the 2nd truck not just marred but smashed or broken. Very upsetting. They would say it was probably weak before the move. Many of these items we've had for many years and made every other move without damage. We can only believe they started getting tired/lazy with loading the 2nd truck and not packing it well.
Since unpacking we have several broken items in boxes too and some items are just totally missing!
I will say that every one of the men were polite to our faces. When something was pointed out to be wrong or moved to a different area in the room they either attempted it themselves then walked away saying they needed help from a co-worker and then it was forgotten. I have found numerous boxes marked in a totally wrong place (ex: marked family room in the bath closet).
We are elderly and feel we hired for good money a professional moving company to make it easier for us with this move, especially considering all boxes were labeled specifically.
At the end of the day they did move some items around for us and called our move time at 8.5 hours because they took lunch on the way to the new house. We gave them a decent tip but were seriously disappointed with the lack of care they used with many of our things.
The third time the inexperienced movers they sent broke three pieces of furniture. They stood my hutch on edge and the edge broke off.
They laid a settee on it back and broke the back. A bookcase and chair were not stored in the truck well and the chair came through the back of the bookcase. They tried to give me $200 for the damage, but I wanted my furniture back the way it was before they broke it. They eventually sent out a repairman who did a decent repair job. Unfortunately, I can no longer trust the company.
UPDATE 17-Dec-2012
The move has turned ugly today - we had filed a claim and Allied (O'Briens) notified us today that they "cannot accept liability" for the items they damaged. If you look back at the move - Brett and George arrived in NH before us and unloaded the items planned for storage into the storage unit. They were just finishing up when we arrived. That was our mistake. We only saw a few final items come off the truck and into storage, we did not see the majority of the truck (and the damaged items) come off the truck earlier in the day and get packed into storage. We discovered the damage when our new movers began unpacking the storage unit. Our storage unit was part of a professionally run, climate controlled, secure 5 story building, not a mini-storge unit.
You can always tell a good company by how they resolve problems, O'Briens is not a good company. O'Briens has chosen not to accept our claim and has left us with a dryer we can't use and a china cabinet we can't use. Brett and George knew these items were damaged, loaded them into storage, and figured we wouldn't notice the damage until months later when they were back in PA. We are now left to repair the damage on our own. We just want to be compensated for the damage they knowingly caused. True professionals would have stood up when it happened, said they caused the damage, and made plans to get our items repaired.
"“There was only one item that the customer wanted to file a claim for, which was damage to a couch. The couch was preexisting damage, and was not even part of the move! The customer saw one of the worker’s pocket knife(that we use for opening boxes) fall out and hit the couch in question. The knife wasn’t even open. Then they attempted to claim that the whole end of the couch was crushed. Despite this, we attempted to send them a claim form to pursue them being reimbursed for the couch at $.60 per pound (they did not wish to purchased full coverage). The customer informed us that his cat had since ruined the couch so he would not be making a claim. A few months later this same customer called us to again move them. If this was such a bad move, why would they call us to move again? After the incident with the first move, we refused the offer to do the second move. Apparently in response, this review was submitted.” -O'Brien's Moving & Storage"
