Hoyt Construction Inc

Rod Hoyt was very personable and seemed to have a clear vision of the requirements of the job.  I had no reservations about hiring him.  The job was started on time.  The first day worker came and built the forms for the footings and laid rebar.  They set a date for the first inspection and pour.  My son and I could see that the site was not ready for either.  No one from Hoyt was here.  We called Rod.  It turned out that the worker doing the footing forms was inexperienced and the regular man had been on vacation.  The regular guy was supposed to be here very early to prepare the site properly for the inspection, but he got lost and did not appear until right before the inspector came.  My son walked around with the inspector and many infractions were noted, ie. rebar lying directly on the ground, rebar touching the edge of the form, only 2 or 3 inches of overlap where lengths of rebar connected.  The inspector signed off, contingent on the mistakes being fixed.  The next thing we knew the footings were poured and we were sure there had not been enough time to fix the infractions.  This is an example of how it went throughout the job.  My son is a draftsman for an engineering company and draws structural plans for a living.  He knows the codes and regulations. He was on Rod's back constantly to fix this and fix that.  We had beautiful detailed plans and Rod barely looked at them. None of the doors are the correct measurement and the garage foundation is 4 foot west of where we wanted it!   In summary: Rod was always personable, he started the job on time and completed on time.  I felt the price was reasonable for the scope of the job and the amount of concrete used.  He took a great deal of pride in the finish of the flatwork.  It was that pride that I initially recognized and what made me want to hire him.  What I didn't understand was that he didn't pay attention to other details, and it was all about appearances; as long as mistakes were covered by concrete, they didn't count.  He was not concerned.  If my son had not been here I would not have known the regulatiions and multiple mistakes would have been covered up.  I would have trusted Hoyt Construction.  I would have seen the lovely finish work and had no idea the structural integrity of the foundation was sub-standard.
