I have used them annually since 2010 and I have always been pleased with their service. They only do what's necessary; I asked about the need to trim my small maple tree and Stephen said not to touch it and we could look at it next year. They are thorough and friendly and they leave the yard, driveway and sidewalks cleaner than when they arrived.
Description of Work: Stephen and his crew arrived early and trimmed four rhododendrons, a cypress hedge, a willow, a dogwood and a birch.

They arrived a few minute early. Promptly got to work, and removed everything. They cleaned up everything, and even took some branches I had removed from a different tree. Te only thing left behind was a bit of sawdust. Tue to the layout of my back yard, that could get a stump grinder back there without removed in bushes, so I asked them not to grind the stump and they dropped the price. Most other quotes where 2-3 times more.

We had Stephan come out this summer to give us an estimate. For the trees we wanted trimmed, he suggested that we wait until Fall. Another company said they could do the job right away, and they also were going to charge a little more. We decided to wait until this month to have the work done, and chose to go with Western States Arboriculture because we were impressed by Stephan's knowledge and professionalism. My husband and I both had to work the day the tree work was done. When we came home, we couldn't believe how open everything looked! What astounded us just as much, though, was how immaculate the yard was. He did an incredible job with the clean-up! We wouldn't have known anyone was there during the day if we didn't see how our trees looked before and after. I would definitely use this company again in the future, and would highly recommend them to others.

In short, that is exactly what Stephan and his four person crew did. But before getting the job he met with my wife and daughter, and myself, to discussed the work that should/could be done. As a Certified Arborist, he is well qualified to reccomend what work is needed to ensure damaged material is removed, tree trimed back from the house, and the neighbor's house, and still ensure the integrity of this 100+ year old white oak tree. Stephan and his crew arrived on the job site at 8:30, with work truck and chipper. I left early but my wife said they didn't leave untill around 5:00 PM. That was a good days job getting everything taken care of. They initially set up barriers to protect the buildings and the outside AC unit. It is my understanding there was a lot of climbing to get at, and lower, all the deadwood. Before leaving they chipped all the limb debris, removed the protective barriers, and clean up the work site. As you would expect, the tree looks a whole lot better from the yard. And from a distance, it retains the classic upper story shape of a mature oak tree. Western States Arboriculture did an excellent job in making all this happen. Thank you again.
Description of Work: I asked Stephan Lilles for a written description of the work to be done and he provided the following: "Pruning of one large oak tree located in center of back yard to remove large deadwood, hazardous branches, and to uplift over buildings. Removal of one large hazardous branch back to trunk. Cut wood into 16" rounds and leave in work area. Chipping and hauling of all wood and debris."

Fantastic service from start to finish. They were able to get me in the same week we talked about the project. Not only did they take out the trees that we had talked about, but when the neighbor came over to see what they were doing, they took out a tree that was on her property that I had been hoping to get removed at some point. They ground the stumps and took away all debris. They also trimmed three maples that were overgrown and had been unattended for years.

Scheduled an estimate within a couple days of initial call. Stephan came out and gave advice on the two trees we called for, and also for some other trees around the yard. He diagnosed three river birches with birch bore and recommended removing them. His bid for the two trees was very reasonable. We scheduled the job for the next week and removed the birches ourselves. I called and asked them to add removal of the brush pile from the birch trees to our bill. Stephan and crew showed up as scheduled and did a very careful, efficient and professional job as per the original bid. They hauled off the extra debris at no additional charge.

Stephan came out about a month before we had the work done, walked around the property with me, and gave his opinion on the health of the many trees on the property, as well as his opinion about the trees we wanted to remove. We scheduled the work, and he and his crew came out and did everything as agreed, for the price he estimated. Several of these trees were very large, including an incense cedar approx. 60 feet tall that Stephan pruned and shaped beautifully. This was a particular challenge because some time in the past, before we bought the property, this tree had been topped, so its growth was not particularly beautiful. For the trees that needed to be removed, the crew cut up the wood into rounds for firewood, as we had requested. They were also really accommodating in leaving the chipped debris in a neat pile so we could use it for mulch. On the day of the work, they also agreed to remove some seedling cherries that had volunteered to grow in an inconvenient place right next to the house, and this was done at no extra charge. I appreciate Stephan's knowledge about and advice concerning the various trees. I learned that in addition to the more common conifers seen around here (Douglas fir, western red cedar), our yard contained a giant sequoia, a coast redwood, and a cypress.
Description of Work: Removal of 4 large trees from our suburban property. Removed dead limbs from another large tree. Pruned and shaped yet another large tree. Removed several smaller bushes from property. Ground out stumps from some nearly-dead 50-year old shrubs. Ground out stumps from 2 of the 4 large trees removed.

Stephan and two nice young men arrived that morning and started on the work. They cut down the Maple in the back and started grinding the stump down. Everything went well, until it was unfortunately discovered that I had irrigation piping and an actual shut off valve that I had absolutely no idea about, right under the giant stump! In 17yrs, the tree had grown around the valve and irrigation system. Stephan and I had made a point of trying to figure out where the irrigation in my back yard may be prior to removing the tree, but I had no information on my new home's system and location of all the heads........so I was unable to properly inform Stephan of a potential problem. Thankfully instead of just covering up the issue, Stephan was honest with me and had to quit grinding the rest of the stump on that day, till I figure out what to do with the 17yr old, very buried system I apparently have, in the spring! He kindly offered to come back at a later date and finish grinding when I get the system figured out. Meanwhile, the young men in the front yard, did a lovely job of pruning back the two Maples in front of my living room window.........which the previous owner commented on, when she dropped off the instructions she found for the irrigation system a couple of days later. I thought I was given a very good price for the work that they did and the issues we ran into! Stephan is very pleasant to work with and I felt comfortable with having them at my home. When it comes time to removing some of the other trees in my yard, Stephan and Western States will definitely be the first one's I call upon and have already referred them to others..........

We received a recommendation from a friend for Western States Arborist. We se an appointment with Stephan for a consultation to find out what types of trees we have and how to care for them. He spent an hour with us talking about each tree and how to keep it looking nice year round. As first time homeowners, this was very valuable information. We then asked for a quote to prune all the larger trees. A week later, Stephan and his crew came out and did an excellent job pruning five trees and removing an Asian pear tree and its stump. The crew was polite, worked efficiently and cleaned up after they were done. Our trees now look very healthy. We were particularly concerned about a green maple that had been continuously topped by the previous owners to preserve the view from an upstairs window. Stephan and his crew helped reshape the tree and prune it for natural growth moving forward. We felt all the work performed was excellent and we will definitely have them out again when we need it.

I cannot say enough good about Western States Aboriculture. They were extremely responsive in my time of crisis in spite of it being a very busy time for them. Their price was very fair and the work was professional, efficient and very well done. They did everything promised and then some. Showed up almost immediately, assesed situation and gave me a time line for the work.Everyone on the crew was hardworking and respectful. I live in the trees and have had to use various tree services over the years. I have never been more impressed or satisfied with a service. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Needed hazardous trees removed promptly as one had already fallen on neighbors roof. In the end, took out 4 trees, cut wood in rounds and stacked. Also chipped all debris into back yard and hauled off anything I didn't want. As a purely good will gesture, came back the next day to remove a dangling dead limb that was over my drive and could have been a home hazard. Involved climbing a giant fir.

Stephan came out and looked at the tree and emailed us an estimate. We scheduled the work, and he and his crew came out promptly on the day scheduled. They were efficient, careful, and professional. The cost was very reasonable. They hauled off all the debris and cut the rounds exactly as we wanted. They cleaned up the whole area before they left. They ground out an older stump near this tree, for free, which was really nice. I would definitely hire them again if needed.
Description of Work: Removed a 50 year old, double-trunked western red cedar from our yard. Chipped and hauled away the branch debris. Cut the trunk into 16" rounds and left them for firewood. Ground out the stump as well as an older, partially decayed stump from another tree.

Stephan did an estimate for one tree. On the day of service Stephan showed up and I asked him to remove an additional tree. He did an on the spot quote and removed both. His guys were quick, professional, careful to protect the plants and bushes around both tree's and cleaned up before they left. He happily walked me through my yard and identified each tree and told me how to care for and prune it for health of both the tree and my home.

We hired Western States Arboriculture not only because the estimate was half of an estimate we had received the year before for work on just one tree, but also because in his evaluation of our requests, Stephan showed that he really knew what was best for the health of the trees we wanted limbed. When they arrived, they started on the limb that was hanging over the neighbor's fence. We have a flower bed underneath, so they covered the plants with garbage cans to protect them, and then set up a pulley system to lower the big branches so that they would not damage either the garden or the fence. When the garbage cans were removed, the garden looked great. Trimming on other trees and the tree removals went like clockwork as well. They would have hauled away all of the debris, but we wanted the chippings for mulching in our various gardens, so they brought in a monster chipper and chipped everything up into a couple of very neat piles. They then raked up even the tiniest limbs, doing a much better job than we had ever bothered to do after winter wind storms. Then they brought out the leaf blowers and blew back into the flower beds all of the tiny chips that had made it into the grass. Not quite done, one of the workers went around the block to gain entry into the neighbor's back yard. He threw small branches over the fence, raked up the tiny stuff, and used the leaf blower to clean up his yard as well. (The neighbor was just as pleased with these guys as we were.) The entire job was completed by 3:30pm, and we couldn't be happier. You won't go wrong if you hire Western States Arboriculture.
Description of Work: We had several big trees in need of servicing. Two 40-50-foot trees needed to be removed, and we had 12-18 inch limbs on one tree that were hanging over the house and another 18-inch limb on another tree that was hanging over a fence and brushing against the neighbor's house. We wanted those big limbs to be removed, but we also didn't want to lose the trees. We also had a few dead limbs in other big trees that we wanted to have removed.

The people at Western States were friendly and professional. I requested that they remove a 60-foot sweetgum tree whose 18-inch trunk was located in the middle of some shrubs and 10 feet from the house. The branches extended well over the house and also over rhodadendrons and camelias. They asked that I separate the shrubs to make a 4-foot path to the trunk, which I was able to do. They came as scheduled and finished in somewhat over half a day. They worked expertly, lowering tree parts using ropes so that nothing fell on the roof of the house and only a few small branches fell on the shrubs, doing no damage. They ground down the stump to about 6 inches below ground level, except for the far side. The worker told me he did not follow a root as far as possible (to protect the roots of shrubs), but after I removed the sawdust, I saw that much more was left. I called them on 3 occasions asking them to finish the job and even offered to split the cost. Each time I was pleasantly told they would look into it, but they never called back or finished the job. In summary, they did a truly expert job for almost everything, but I wish they had been willing to save me the work of having to finish it.

The estimate was free and everyone in their office was responsive and polite. The crew got here quick. After we received a organized and professional looking quote (they use Quickbooks) we scheduled a date about a week in advance, but they found an opening and came over to do the work the very next day. They did a wonderful job of cleaning up after themselves, especially since they had to carrying everything from my backyard around my house and out to the street in the front, as hardly any berries or branches were left behind. A few wildflower patches growing in my yard sustained some damage, but it was barely noticeable and easily fixed. They followed my instructions to leave the stumps at a specified height for future herbicide treatment and cut the larger branches and tree trunks into firewood lengths. The crew finished the work in less than four hours and, considering everything they had to do to fall the trees and clean up, the $400 dollars was worth every penny. I would definitely recommend Western States Arboriculture to a friend.
Description of Work: The crew removed three trees from my yard (two 40' tall European Mtn. Ash and one 30' tall Holly). These trees were tall, tangled together, rotten and access to the tree tops was blocked on one side by power lines.

Ok. I felt better about the job right after it was done than I do now because I think a bit more trimming could have been done. Stephan was nice to work with and did what he said he would. I think he needs to get better trained staff to actually do the work. Also, didn't return my call on a question after he had been paid. Still, given what's out there he should up and got the job done.
