+ 1 moreWe first used Fouch Building and Remodeling to remodel our kitchen. The kitchen turned out absolutely beautiful. We couldn’t be happier. Working with John Fouch and his team was easy—they were responsive, respectful and skilled. Every single one of his team members was nice and professional which is so important when you have people in your house every day for months. When we signed the contract, John told us the project would take four months, and he finished exactly on time. In addition, he sent us a regular weekly schedule, so we knew where we were in the process, and what to expect in the upcoming week. Whenever we had a question or concern, John responded on the same day and addressed any problems quickly and professionally. We loved our kitchen so much that we had John build us a new garage and remodel our front door and stoop. Both turned out wonderfully. In fact, strangers regularly compliment us on our new front door and stoop because the remodel transformed the look of the house. All and all, John Fouch and his team were outstanding, and we would use them again in a heartbeat.

He provided very detailed and professional documents including the agreement, change orders, change order register, schedule and supporting details. John had a great team that were very friendly and responsive. The work site was kept tidy. John was on site frequently. In a couple of instances John made the call to absorb some additional scope because he felt strongly that the result would be better than the compromise we were willing to make.
Description of Work: Basement remodel / finishing including a bedroom, bathroom, store room, laundry room and hallway. Replaced basement windows. Framing, drywall, electrical, permitting, paint, electrical, flooring.

It was a few years back I have forgotten the actual date. I was satisfied with the cost as I had other estimates from others and I had read reviews of others before hiring.... and I will use them again.

+ 0 moreJohn and his crew came highly recommended by our architects for this project, and the strong rapport between everyone on the project -- the architects remained plugged in through construction -- made for a very positive experience all the way around. The schedule slipped by only just a few weeks from what was originally scheduled, and the workers here on site were always very pleasant to interact with. We lived in the house during the construction and, for the most part, work areas were kept clean and the inconvenience was kept to a minimum. John was a very active communicator, keeping us up to date on the status of sub-projects and promptly responding to our issues. Change orders were efficiently and fairly dealt with. All of the workmanship was of a very high quality, and we are very happy with the result. We would unreservedly recommend Fouch Building & Remodeling and would absolutely use them again.
Description of Work: Construction of new kitchen and extensive remodeling of adjoining great room, plus new pantry, two walk-in closets and hallway access into master bedroom. Work included demolition of existing kitchen, adding two skylights, new windows and external doors, interior wall removal and addition, cabinet and countertop installation, new appliance installation, floor and wall tiling, light fixtures, etc. Part of the existing kitchen hardwood floor was salvaged and repurposed for a new hallway area. Other hardwood floors were refinished, as was the large backyard deck.

+ -1 moreJohn arrived on the first day of the job exactly when he had said he would. In addition, he was a great communicator, letting me know when his workers would be coming by and asking me how things were going. It's important to note that he returned my calls and e-mails promptly. John's employees did the vast majority of the labor, but John dropped by often to see that things were being done correctly. It quickly became evident that customer satisfaction is very important to John. He and his employees were pleasant and professional. The job took longer than any of us anticipated, but I want to emphasize that the crew worked around my schedule and I was not always home during the remodel. The digging and jacking up the house was more complicated than was apparent when John first saw it. We were not charged for any extra time spent on the job. I especially appreciated the extra things John and his employees did for us, such as fixing a door that didn't work well after the remodel, even though that wasn't in the the contract I signed, leaving some of the wooden stakes for me to use in my garden, etc. We asked John to do an extra job for us, which involved purchasing specialty screws for our security door, which had shifted during the leveling process and would not lock. John's employee re-hung the door and replaced the screws. We were charged $50 for the parts and labor, which I feel was more than fair. It was a pleasure to deal with John, and we'd gladly hire him and his employees for another job.
Description of Work: John sent his crew to put in a foundation under a small part of our house that did not have one. They jacked up our house to level it, and dug, by hand, a 1-2 foot trench around the base of our house, removing large rocks and taking care to avoid established plants that grew near the foundation area. They built wood forms and poured concrete. After that, they replaced siding that had had to be removed before the foundation was installed. This involved cutting the siding to fit around the new foundation. They hauled away the dirt and rocks that were displaced by the digging. Another worker repaired the drywall that had been cracking as our house shifted and which cracked further upon leveling. He applied a few layers, carefully sanding them in between. The kitchen now feels more stable and I can tell things are level. The sheetrock looks great and is ready for us to repaint it. We are very happy!

Also requested them to add nutritional supplements to the rest of the existing lawn as well as weed killer. The completed project was superior to anything I had imagined. The project was finished in a timely manner and the grounds were spotless when they finished and departed. They continued to stop by for the next 3-4 wks and adjust the watering schedule and mow and reseed areas that appeared thin. I am very pleased with the finished project and have asked them to return and assist me in some additional landscape projects.

Luis did the job and was just great--completed the job in less than a day and right before we put our house on the market (we had a bit of an urgent deadline). Apparently our buyers' inspector even complimented his work! We also hired John to inspect a very difficult crawlspace in our new home. We will definitely be calling on him for future (hopefully more interesting!) projects.
Description of Work: Summary of work performed to basement framing: Replace (1) 4x4 post, add post base and post cap. Replace (1) 4x6 post, add post base and post cap. Provide mechanical connection at post base and post head of (4) existing steel columns. Supply and install water heater strap kit.

+ -1 moreThis was a large and scary job. I found John as he was working across the street doing a remodel on a million dollar home. The house had to be shored up and supported so that the walls could be jackhammered down.Then the footings had be be excavated and removed. More excavation was needed resulting in the removal of 3 dumpsters of material. A new wall designed by a Structural Engineer was constructed with oversize footings. I found John to be professional, honest and upfront. He is knowlegeable in all areas and has tremendous experience. In all my experiences with contractors I have never found one as good as John. I give him 5 Stars.I would recommend him for any construction/renovation job without reservation.
Description of Work: I hired John to repair/replace my Foundation. He also built retaining walls to support the earth. Our house is in the Alphabet District in NW Portland.

+ -1 moreWe did not go with this company. The response time was not an A. We had to email him and tell him we didn't get his quotes so he had to resend it but by then a week had gone by. He wanted some feedback on his prices but we were not happy with his email punctuality so we signed with someone else. He was prompt coming out initially but I will not use him again in the future.

Because the car was still in (and sticking through the side of) the garage, he could only give me a preliminary estimate which was considerably lower than the others I had received. I went with another contractor because of Fouch's distance from our house and the price disparity, but he left me with a positive impression and I would consider him for other work.

+ 0 moreI hired John and his crew, Mike and Matt, to paint the exterior of our house and replace a small area of siding around 2 corner windows. The house required some significant prep work as we had many areas where the paint had bubbled and peeled off the house. Mike and Matt showed up when they said they would and worked hard to get the job done on time. Mike did some cosmetic siding replacement around 2 corner windows that made the house look "finished". The siding in this area didn't match the rest of the house and just looked odd prior to Mike matching our existing siding and window molding exactly. After the job was finished I discovered a dry rot area around a large front window. I called John to see if they could come back and fix this, as well as clean the moss off our steep roof that I did not feel comfortable climbing. John returned to evaluate the window repair. A couple of days later he had Mike and Matt return. The window was repaired and the moss scraped off our roof and treated in a couple of hours. Mike was able to fix the window frame saving me a lot of money on replacing the entire window. I am very happy with the work that John did for us. We have gotten many complements from the neighbors and passers by on how the house looks. John gave us an accurate estimate on the job. He and his crew are knowledgable and concerned with doing a good job on time. They helped answer many questions that I had before the job and along the way. We are planning on having a section of fence replaced in our yard and I am planning on hiring them to do the work.

+ -1 moreJohn was one of three contractors that we interviewed for a house remodel. He was very professional, he answered calls immediately and communicated well via email. We had sent him a PDF of our house plans and he even drove by the house to view it before meeting with us (the house to be remodeled was in a different location than the house we are living in now). When he arrived for our meeting, he already came prepared with a typed out estimate in hand. Upon discussing the remodel with myself and my husband, it was clear that he was very experienced in his field. It was also apparent that he had looked at our plans extensively prior to our meeting. We ultimately contracted with another company for their more competitive quote, but would consider John again in the future for another bid should the need arise, due to his professionalism and experience.

+ 8 moreVery well. Greatest bulk of project was finished in time expected, say 95%. The regular crew members were courteous and timely, and overall did a good job cleaning up end of day with few exceptions but that's understandable and we just cleared paths when we needed to. Wouldn't have been a big deal if we weren't still living in the house with a three year old and a dog, and trying to get to our makeshift kitchen on our back deck which was just off of the construction zone. The team was understanding and great to get us a functional kitchen for Christmas eve with a whirlwind of activity the day before and actually on christmas eve morning. We had a minor delay on the stair rails, which took far longer than expected, and some corrections to the flooring and cabinetry, but all eventually were addressed. John worked hard to make us happy. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Our only complaint was a few times we came home in the evenings to an unlocked front door or rear slider. We passed these concerns on to John and he was understanding and reminded his crew to be more aware of this. I would presume this happens at some point with every remodel though. John told me that the one Subcontractor he used on our project that didn't come through as expected (stair rails), wouldn't be used again for future projects. I think this is a good indication that he is looking for good guys to work with and that quality and integrity is of utmost importance.
Description of Work: We had Fouch B&R do a complete demo and remodel of our kitchen, entry and living/dining area in the Fall of 2009. This included demolition to the studs through the kitchen, including the ceiling and the removal of three interior walls separating living, entry, kitchen and dining. Based or architectural drawings supplied, they replaced one existing glu-lam beam and added a second to create one open space. All new custom built and stained cherry cabinets from Art of Cabinetry installed including built-in look pantry around existing transom window; cabinets are frameless with full door overlay; drawers are soft-close and full extension glides; cabinet boxes are constructed with full 3/4" plywood with maple finish interior. Full height tile backsplash in kitchen and Silestone counters installed; We purchased appliances, sinks and faucets, and hardwood flooring material prior and these are not included in final cost noted above. Masonry: removed brick fireplace surround and replaced with sheetrock and cement board. Added full garage surround with Mutual Materials real stone (subcontracted). New gutters all around. Porch: demo'd existing concrete front porch, replaced with Ipe porch and stairs. New fir door, new interior pipe steel stair rail system with horizontal cable rails. Installed homeowner purchased Cumaru flooring, fabricated Cumaru stair treads. Installed 10 can lights in lower living area while the floor upstairs was pulled up. Ran gas line for a new fireplace insert (homeowner purchased and had installed outside of bid). Resided with Hardi Plank siding x three sides, and painted full exterior. Replaced and picture framed out exterior window trims. Finish: new trim all around kitchen, dining and living, sheetrock wrapped windows and finished with doug fir sill and skirt.

We showed them what we wanted to do and we asked for their feedback because they have been doing it a lot longer than we have. They give us ideas and we put our ideas with theirs and that worked. Their estimate was written and broken down. We haven't been disappointed at all at this point. They were very quick and came out promptly. They were on time, which is really unusual. We talked to other people and will probably go with them. They were very helpful.
Description of Work: We got two different estimates from Fouch Building & Remodeling. They gave us one about a month ago and we changed our minds and they sent another one last week. We are redoing our bathrooms, a bedroom and taking out a fireplace mantel.
