During the estimate, the owner threw his pile of certifications/ qualifications on the table in order to demonstrate his capability. I went ahead and hired him to replace my 40 year old furnace with new, high efficiency Trane. His price was considerably better than the high price contractors in my area. I requested a box to elevate the furnace (per the gas company's earlier requirement), which may not have been necessary with this furnace. But I requested it anyway. The custom box was a mismatch to the floor duct base. Approximately a 2" air gap remained at the front. The filter housing had multiple leaks. This was bad. But the real problem was that he left the job as completed. I didn't realize until after, the extent of the problem. Thank goodness I filed for a permit and paid the fee myself. The building inspector helped me out by talking him into fixing the air leaks. His helper came out to aluminum tape all of the leaks.
