Dry Cleaning Service
I had quite a few very old and musty antique hand-embroidered linens that needed to be cleaned and pressed. I believe the main owner/manager of the cleaners is a lady, with her husband assisting mostly at the desk with in-take and pick-up. I also needed a new zipper put into a robe, and had previously had this done on several occasions (cleaners also touts expert alterations and repairs). I was in a hurry when I dropped the items off (and should have counted the items myself already), but was surprised when the "husband" at the desk just said "Oh there are a lot of these - we'll add them up later..." My instinct was to insist he inventory/count the items at that time, and at least list the total on my receipt, but someone else was waiting and I was, as I said, in a hurry... I just felt it was sloppy and unprofessional - and while I'm sure all items were returned, it still left the potential open for a dispute later on... I was given no estimate of the cost of the work, except for the zipper (which I think was quoted at $20.00). When I picked up the items later in the week, I was stunned at the bill (over $75,00 for the linens), although I'm not saying it was overpriced - just unexpected because I had absolutely no clue in advance. The robe had the original zipper, and the man said the repair was just to install a new "lock" at the bottom - so the charge was about $10... (not inexpensive for that solution?) When I got home and tried to wear the robe, the zipper again came completely off the track, and didn't seem to be repaired at all... When I took it back, it was determined that some teeth were damaged farther up, and the solution at that time was to sew across above that defect... I was sort of unhappy not to just get the new zipper I'd originally wanted, and felt it was expensive for the makeshift repair, but...
