This gregarious and efficient family really know their business. My husband and I were moving out of our family home of many years. The move was full of emotion and stress. Kristin and her family business swept in and instantly began reducing the stress. They have a very business-like but happy approach to getting the job done. When I went thru my 'paralyzed' modes, they made helpful and concrete suggestions. They were respectful of our home, especially the hardwood floors and new carpets. With many years in the business, they have a huge 'estate sale' following. As a result, the proceeds from our sale were phenomenal. I have recommended them to several of my friends; it was a pleasure to work with them.
At the first meeting with Kristen and Jimmy we hit it off like old friends. We're all original North Portland folks which helped ease any worries I may have had. You hear all kinds of stories about unscrupulous sales people but I immediately knew that Kristen and Jimmy were the real 'deal'. They were, however a little hesitant because there were so many boxes and items throughout the house it was difficult to see exactly what was there to sell. I reassured them that we had plenty to come from storage. I said I would get some pictures and bring back some items to help them decide if they wanted to take the job. My brother and I got to work and Kristen and Jimmy came back 5 days later to reassess the possibilities. W'ere so glad they said yes to the prospect.
When it came time for them to start the process the week before the sale, it soon became apparent that we had plenty for the sale!lol...Kristen, Jimmy, Dee and Ricky along with Carol spent 5 1/2 days unwrapping, moving and staging the items to ready for pricing pictures and posting online. We all decided that additional time was needed to truly format the sale to be the success it was.
Throughout the entire process, everyone handled our family 'treasures' as if they were personally connected to them. All done with dignity and respect which was so appreciated by my brother and me.
When it came time to begin the pricing portion, Kristen and Jimmy to the time to explain the delicacy in doing so. What we were sure were the 'big ticket' items that we just KNEW were ready for Antiques Roadshow...well, they both gently let us down to reality. And of course what we had almost thrown away several times were what garnered the most money! Who knew? A word to all of you...THROW NOTHING AWAY!!
The day before the sale, the whole crew from Family Affair were so thoughtful. They gave us time to take pictures, do one last walk through to see if we had forgotten anything of sentiment and just take time to say goodbye.
Through this whole process, my brother and I were still living in the house which poses several challenges to the sales folks and can be very emotional to the owners. But my brother and I were so thankful for Kristen and company's willingness to work around us and were again so respectful of our family possession. They treated everything like it was their own.
My brother and I did not want to be present during the days of sales (trust me, you don't either!) so we got ourselves out right before the hoardes descended! And I'm truthful when I say hoardes as the reputation of Family Affair is legendary. 150 people were lined up ready to come in 30 minutes before the 9am time frame! I received texts throughout the day from Kristen letting me know how things were going and what things were selling for which was cool and fun. Even though I wanted to stay clear of the madness, curiosity got the better of me and I had my brother drop me off about an hour before the sale closed on Saturday...
WOW!! It was still pretty intense and going strong. All the mid-century furniture, all the Radkos, military, books, jewelry, toys, games....GONE!! And the Christmas/ Holiday store upstairs was half gone! They were selling like mad and folks were parked for several blocks around our Alberta St home. After the last buyers left around 4, we touched base and everyone was exhausted but smiling that things were going so well. Again, they were sincere with their comments and we all looked forward to 50% Sunday. We were told it would be even more overthetop than Saturday!!
We arose Sunday to folks lining up 70 minutes early to get the jump on the competition...somehow, scenes of Jerry Lewis' Who's Minding The Store bargain basement sale kept popping into my mind! HA! Again, my curiosity got me and I came back 30 mins before closing. It was STILL going strong but was winding down. Surreal but cool seeing that everything was going.
And since we are selling the home an added bonus were the folks who came to look over the home during the sale. In fact, one gent called his agent and is making an offer today!!
Throughout this process, Kristen and her crew maintained a professional demeanor along with a reassuring narrative to my brother and me that this was going to be a really successful sale. And ,it was!!
The process from beginning to end was an education in the art and science of estate sales. The various stages from assessment, contract, unpacking/staging, pricing/posting online, sale days, and windup/cleanup show that to be successful you have to know what you're doing and Kristen and Jimmy have over 40 years combined experience which was highly evident throughout. Experience counts and they have it in droves!
It has been an emotional/exhausting/educational experience that I don't want to repeat anytime soon. But, when the time does come I know who to call.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Kristen, Jimmy, Dee and Ricky for doing a masterful job with the North Alberta Arts sale!! You are great folks, pros at your craft and will always have a special place in our memories...
I highly highly HIGHLY recommend Family Affair Estate Sales for anyone who needs estate sales services.
Cheers,
Tim Callicrate
