If you are looking for someone to build an entire house, an addition to your house, or even smaller projects, contact Mike Turner immediately! He doesn't advertise at all, because he doesn't need to. People see his work, and want to hire him. We have all heard horror stories about contractors. Mike prides himself on trying to be the exact opposite of those contractors, and I've found that to be true. He wants to do the best job possible for the homeowner. He is a perfectionist, detail-oriented, and a totally honest person. A bonus is that he also has a great personality, and after just a day or two on the job you feel like a friend is there working on your house, not just a contractor.

One of the best things is that when he is working on a project, he works only on that project. He does NOT have several things going at once, and shows up for your job perhaps a few times a week. He works at your job, and only your job, until it is finished.
I have a small house, 985 square feet, and wanted to turn it into a bungalow-style house as much as would be feasible. When he first came over to discuss the job and give an estimate, he brought two photo albums of examples of his work, and a long list of references and their phone numbers. He was very attentive, and listened to my description of what I wanted, and also offered his own suggestions.

I did a rough sketch of the sort of porch I wanted, 6 feet out from the house and 16 feet long, with the tapered square pillars typical of the style, and a railing all around it. His ability to design things is amazing. He didn't do a scale drawing of the porch, didn't need to, but just temporarily nailed up a piece of plywood to draw the angles on, then built it.

t turned out to be far, far nicer than I ever imagined. He arrived punctually every morning, always cheerful. He obviously enjoys what he does, and I never saw him in a bad mood for the 5+ weeks he was here. It says a lot that once the outlines of the porch took shape, at least half a dozen people every day stopped to admire it, talked to Mike about it, and a number of new projects for Mike came about from passersby seeing his work. He built the porch so that it blended in so well that it looked like it had been there all along. He likes bungalow-style houses, so is very familiar with the details involved.

A good example of his ability to design things is represented by the burgundy-colored corbels, 3 on the front of the porch under the edge of the roof, and 3 on each end of the house (see the photos). We talked about the style, I told him what I'd like, and he ended up making cardboard templates for them, holding them in place to check measurements and placements, then cut them out and put them together at his workshop. They were the perfect finishing touch for the house, and match the thin burgundy trim around the windows and around the stained glass in the front door.

I chose windows that would go with the style, and Mike designed exterior frames for them in the style used in that period, and the effect is perfect. He also made interior frames to match, in solid oak. He built the frames in his workshop, sanded and stained them, so installing them here was essentially a matter of taking out the old windows, installing the new ones, and plugging in the new frames, both exterior and interior. Apparently most contractors build the frames on site, in pieces, but this way is far more efficient.

He also put in a beautiful skylight over my computer table, 2 feet by 6 feet. When he was working on it, he very carefully draped plastic completely around to contain the dust from sawing and sanding, and was always extremely careful about thoroughly cleaning up before he left for the day.

Altogether, not only did Mike do a fantastic job on everything he did to my house, but it was a pleasure to have him working here, very much a feeling of a friend working on my house, not at all what the experience of a contractor could easily be: a gruff and grumpy stranger who does what he wants to, how he wants to, and prefers to not really listen to, or work with, the homeowner. Again, I would recommend, if you are looking for a contractor, to contact Mike Turner first. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed, and you'll be delighted with the results.
