It was supposed to be a 1-month job, which ended up taking 5 months to complete because he couldn’t get the materials and got stuck halfway through the job. Throughout the process, Dinsdale made design decisions without okaying them with me and I ended up with a fence with slanted supports that does not match the rest of my current fence, a stone deck with a wooden retaining wall and a muddy/weedy backyard that was not soil-prepped or planted the way I asked. I was going to hire him for the front yard landscaping, but after my experience with the back yard, I would not willingly work with him again. He made it very clear that my project was one of his least priorities. I finally had to call the materials company myself to get the project going again. Dinsdale was argumentative and blamed me for our miscommunications. On the positive side, his crew seemed knowledgable, friendly and did quality work, despite the poor leadership and decisions made by Dinsdale. Dinsdale also recommended Barbara Simon for the landscape design, who I would not recommend. A separate review was written for her.

As mentioned above, the crew worked through a very rainy month, and there was a delay while we waited for some specific trees to come in, but communication was good throughout the project and we were quite pleased with the end result. The crew worked very hard and were great about cleaning up at the end of every day.

We hired Alfred to fill in our landscape after we had a two-level retaining wall put in around our front and side yards. We did not have a plan designed, but knew that we wanted low-maintenance, hardy plants with lots of colorful foliage (rather than flowers). We had the opportunity to visit the Dinsdale nursery and talk about the kinds of plants we like and don't like, and then Alfred selected and placed the plants we ended up with. Before planting, they amended our soil and installed a buried soaker irrigation system. They also installed a transformer and hooked up the landscape lighting that was in the retaining wall. They also built our fence. Alfred is a really nice guy and his crew were pleasant and seemed to know what they were doing. The project took longer to finish than I expected, but overall we're really pleased with the results and have gotten a lot of nice comments from the neighbors.

The contractor did not want to bid, but gave estimate that he assured us would be very close to the final cost. The final cost was well over 35% higher than estimated. There were times that large crews of workers would come and start work in areas of the yard that were not covered. Many time the crews "worked" unsupervised and accomplished almost nothing. It appeared that lack of supervision caused the labor cost to go up dramatically, but we were told that this was not the case. Both ponds developed leaks, tile on the sides did not stay in place even after several sloppy attempts to reattach them by the contractors crew. Irrigation system had several areas that were not done properly, documentation was not given and when asked to get some information it was like pulling teeth and the final document was hardly useful at all.
Response from DINSDALE LANDSCAPE CONTRACTORS INC
"In reading this review, I am very saddened. We came to this job at the request of the design team, who had prepared only a rough conceptual design. As such, we were estimating without actual specifications or final drawings. Additionally, as this was an existing garden there were many areas that required work and were not included in the conceptual design. Of significant concern is the fact that the client waited over four years to make this Angie’s List report. Much of the cost overrun was due to the ever expanding nature of the job. As to supervision, I was personally on site at least every other day to perform and direct work. Our crew leader is very experienced and although accustomed to working from complete plans, he is competent to oversee and coordinate the work. Additionally, during landscape installation, the house was under construction and we were required to work around the builder making our scheduling and logistics difficult. It is of note that the client has never contacted our company about the perceived deficiencies of our work. At the time of the project they were in the middle of building their house and quite frustrated with the builder due to cost overruns and what they saw as deficiencies in their performance. This contributed to the clients ever tightening budget, which we felt the brunt of as the last one on the site. It was the client’s choice to contract on a time and materials basis due to the lack of a complete design and recognizing that they wanted a custom garden to showcase their uniquely architectured house. Due to the non-existent specifications for the hardscape at the time of estimating the price was very rough and the client was aware of this. Many of the materials and finishes subsequently selected were of the most expensive type. Estimating cost is only as good as the information provided. As a contractor for twenty-three years installing custom gardens, many of which we have maintained through the years, we have always endeavored to treat the client’s property as though it were our own and install gardens for the long run. I very much enjoyed working with the client and had a personal connection with the garden and wanted to see it completed properly. As such, we contributed $30,000 in uncharged labor and materials to get the garden to a finished state, without going over what the client wanted to pay. During the landscape installation the client was advised in a timely fashion of what items were costing. Often in retrospect we remember what frustrates us and forget the mitigating circumstances. Whether installing a $15000 or a $500000 garden, we strive to give the best possible result within the constraints of the site and the budget. As mentioned in the opening I am very saddened by this review and feel it is unfortunate that the client felt this way without talking to me about the issues. We always strive to repair and correct any reasonable issues and are always open to communication. We stand behind our work. Again I regret that the client feels this way and believe that we made every possible effort to meet their needs and do the best possible work. This is a family owned business that specializes in native plants and shrubs. They take their time but the quality of the work is worth it. Alfred has special expertise in building water features. He is pleasant to work with and a straight shooter about costs. He has already come to our house twice in preparation for making a bid. Alfred also welcomed our son who is developmentally disabled to come to his nursery and get some job experience working with the greenhouse manager. We definitely plan to use them when we can afford to implement the landscape plan that has been drawn, including two water features.
