This adage is especially true if a business confidently claims, as AJ’s
Auto does, that “You get what you pay for.” They say this on another review site as a justification for charging notably higher prices than the competition.
Putting profit and hubris ahead of quality customer service and a quality product you can stand behind is never a good policy.
This is my conclusion after giving AJ’s the benefit of the doubt regarding several issues for the last five years.
Do yourself a favor: Take your car to one of the other well-reviewed
garages in Salem. It will be substantially cheaper, your vehicle will
be just as fixed, and the garage might actually stand behind its work if
the repairs are faulty.
change, but the great thing about these guys is that if that's all you
need, that's all they do. They don't try to upsell you or convince you
that your car is going to fall apart half way down the block if you
don't dump $500 into it immediately. If something needs fixing they
will tell you, and if they think you have another 10,000 miles before
you need to worry about it they'll tell you that, too. They are honest,
friendly, funny, and make the inconvenience of car maintenance a really
pleasurable experience.
"Thank you for your review. Very glad you are satisfied, even with the little things!"
"Glad to hear everything's good and the windows working good too!"
"[member name removed], The review that you posted was brought to my attention and since I have owned AJ’s Auto Repair for some 38 years I am always taking notice when a customer is concerned about a repair. I reviewed your vehicle records and at first was confused because in your review you talk about a Suburban and the repairs in question were made on a Yukon. The first time the Yukon was in was on 11/28/2011 and was in for what was described as a periodic problem with parking lights. The battery was also periodically going dead. One of our master certified electrical technicians computer scanned the some 18 different electrical modules on your vehicle and no electrical failures or faults of any sort were coded in any of those modules. Looking at your invoice I can see that none of the periodic problems occurred while your vehicle was here either. I can also see that the vehicle was picked up on the same day it was dropped off and that you were charged $98.95 for that scan. You were told that there was a Technical Service Bulletin released by the manufacture of your vehicle describing a possible ignition switch issue and on your invoice you were ask to return if the failure happened again. The next and only other time that the vehicle was in our shop was on 12/6/2012 or slightly over one year later. At that time the park light failure was happening all of the time or at least often enough to support the notion that previous factory bulletin describing periodic switch failure should be addressed which we did. That was finished on the same day, which was a Friday but for some reason was not picked up that day. The following Monday when we attempted to start the vehicle the battery failed on us for the very first time. In checking for that failure we found that electrical wiring in the under hood junction box had been damaged by mice causing the electrical drain and subsequent dead battery. The closest junction box was in Reno Nevada so unfortunately it did take 3 or 4 days to get it to a distribution center in Portland. Over 90 percent of the cars scheduled into our shop are completed and returned to our customers the same day, however, in some cases we have no control over the parts that might be necessary. If you really think it was unfair of us to charge you to re-scan your vehicle over a year after the initial scan I will refund that amount to you because even if you never come back we still don’t want you to be unhappy with our service. I would only ask that you re-post this review so that readers can see that every one of our customers really do matter to us and that fairness is one of the many guiding principles that AJ’S Auto Repair is built on."
