Went very well. I didn't have any experience with Doug or the rest of his company and so was unsure how it would go. The team was prompt, worked hard, did quality work, and cleaned up after themselves. I have no complaints at all and would use them again.

Overall it went great. They did a great job working with me and matching the house. The garage looks amazing. It is well built. There were some modifications to the original contract regarding the fence, and doing some extra work on the sidewalk and driveway, but they took it in stride, which was great. The job took a bit longer than expected (maybe a month longer). Partially due to delays with garage door people and with concrete pouring. To make up for it, Glenn patched up a leaky window sill for free.

Doug Herboth was polite, punctual and willing to work with me to bring costs down for the partial remodel we needed in our master bath. His estimate was clear and he kept me updated with how things were progressing once materials had been ordered. His son, Brian, actually came to do the work. He was also punctual and very polite. Brian was very thorough, removing the sink as well as the toilet and shower in order to lay new flooring under it as well. He even lined the sink cabinet with some of the new vinyl without me having to ask. Brian did not touch up the paint in the bathroom, as paint was not included in the estimate at my request. However, I appreciated that he did spackle over a couple nicks that were made in the wall as a result of taking out the old shower stall and putting a new one into our tiny bathroom. Something that was not part of the original estimate was fixing the bathroom door, which has never closed all the way in the two years we've owned the house. Brian said that the door frame had probably sunk due to the rotting floor underneath and he offered to fix it at no additional charge. The door finally closes and I couldn't be happier! In order to track down all possible leaks that caused the floor to rot in the first place, Brian went into the crawl space under the house. He informed me of several issues going on there including a pipe leak, insulation falling down and the absence of insulation under two of the bedrooms. I asked if it was something he could take care of and he gave me an estimate for it before the end of the day. Thankfully, he never pressured me to go through with any of it and gave me until the next day to speak with my spouse and make a decision. We did ask him to fix those items as well and were pleased with the results. I would highly recommend this company.

We didn't know if it was possible to turn a closet into a small bathroom on the second floor. Glen and Brian made it possible and did an excellent job. The bathroom is just what we hoped for. Professional, knowledgable,on time, stayed within the bid, and easy to communicate with regarding the plan. They went out of their way to complete the job before Thanksgiving, which was not easy to coordinate with busy plumbers during the holidays. They made it happen to our delight. Well worth the price we paid. The job doesn't look like a remodel. It looks like it was part of the original design. Very pleased with their work!
Description of Work: Installed a 4x6 partial bathroom from a previous closet space which required a pocket door installation, framing, lighting, electrical, and plumbing. In addition they resurfaced a popcorn ceiling to a smooth finish and matched new sheetrock in an adjoining bedroom to the orange peel walls already in existence.

Bid was very inclusive, but scope of work was too wide and price very high; provider explained that items on the bid could be added or removed, and that we could then arrive at a serviceable bid. A return email requesting a revisit of bid to remove some unnecessary inclusions and a different method of construction did not elicit a response. If we could arrive at a middle-ground scope of work and cost this season, I would be interested in working with this family business.
Description of Work: Provider arrived on time to look at the scope of work, and within a week provided a detailed estimated bid.

In short, it was another elegant Herboth job. By my count, we have now hired Herboth remodeling six times in just over seven years. This is remarkable by any measure. The measure now, however, is the just completed remodel described above. We will make this brief: The work is exquisite, the time frame was reasonable, the price was fair and the challenges were met with humor and professionalism. We could list a thousand wonderful details about working with Herboth remodel but would prefer to give a single concise summary: Herboth re modelers are fun, creative, top notch craftsmen who care about the well being of their clients and the quality of their work. The real proof lies in a single potent fact; we are re-hiring them for project number seven. This project starts at the end of this month.
Description of Work: Converted an existing free standing 300 square foot art studio, into a studio apartment. The remodel included running all infrastructure (plumbing, sewer, electrical, gas) adding skylights and complete tear-off and replacement of roof.
Glenn and Brian were here when they said they would be. They removed siding from the outside of the house in order to cut a hole for a new window and install the window. They installed a header and used flash/weather tape since the window had no fins. They installed the window, patched the interior sheetrock, installed moldings to match the inside room, caulked the exterior and prepared it for painting. The plywood behind the siding was rotten so they replaced it and they cut off the rotten ends of the lap siding when re-installing. They were able to reduce the original bid and take less time and produce less mess by working from the outside. Like always they cleaned up all the debris from their work area.
Description of Work: In the process of remodeling project last year, the Herboth's removed a window. I kept the window and had them come back this year to place it in a different room, in a wall that had not had a window previously.

Their were high points and less high points. My main complaint was that they didn't finish everything, there was so small detail work left undone but other than that they are fairly good. For what we paid I expected better details to be done. Little things were just not taken care of.
Description of Work: Herboth, WM.D. Remodeling did a major remodeling of the house. They stripped walls to the studs, structural work, redo hardwood floors, and sheet rocking.

Glenn explained our options & we made our choice for the new Fan. We chose the day to have the work done...no rain in the forcast. Glenn went and purchased the new Fan and brought it to our home. He opened the box & made sure that all the parts were there, and nothing was broken. This would save time on the installation day. Everything checked out good, and the date was confirmed. The Herboths are always on time, courteous and friendly. They work steadily, taking appropriate breaks and cleaning up as they work. They will answer any questions as they work & will explain things you want to understand. If there is a problem, or the need to change anything, they will talk with you immediately. Herboth Remodeling are amazing Problem Solvers. We have had to deal with some of the "surprises" that any house seems to hold. The new Fan needed a larger opening. Glenn made the adjustments and moved right along with theinstallation. The Herboths have Always evaluated the problem, and explained the situation to us. Then we discussed the options, including any additional costs, materials & time. They want you to be sure that you are getting the best value for your investment. Our satisfaction with the project has always been their first priority. Glenn was able to complete the project in one day. And, the final cost was under the original estimate. The Thermostat needed a minor adjustment in about 2 weeks. Glenn came immediately and performed the adjustment. The Fan works perfectly & the installation looks great.
Description of Work: We have used Herboth Remodeling many times, so we naturally called Glenn Herboth to replace our Roof Fan. He responded promptly and and came to discuss the project. He explained our options on the type & size of Fan that we could choose. The services in his estimate included removing the old Fan, shaping the opening to fit the new Fan, connecting the wiring, testing the temperature response On/Off features, making certain that the installation was water tight, all the clean-up and debris removal, and being available for questions and any necessary follow-up. His estimate and final cost included the cost of the new Fan, and Glenn purchasing the Fan and bringing to our home.

The project went great. With all projects of this size, there are adjustments to make as the project progresses. In every case Glenn and Brian kept us informed and offered us innovative alternatives. I trusted them with many decisions including choice of lighting fixtures and I approved of their suggestions for stain colors inside the sunroom. Throughout the whole project, the emphasis was on quality and creating a beautiful and useful space that our family can be proud of.
Description of Work: The company performed the design and construction of our project. The project included designing a sunroom, a covered patio area, adding a path, and extending the deck. The sunroom was connected to the back of our house and I wanted it to look like it had always been there. The design they gave me was just what I wanted. As we worked on the quote, they researched various costs of colored and patterned cement, wood interiors, cisterns, removable window solutions, and decking materials. The project itself began in July. Glenn and Brian removed trees and shrubs, and transplanted my tomatoes. They prepared the area for the foundation, the path and plumbing for the cistern. They researched and got several bids for the cement path and foundation. They were helpful in choosing the colors and patterns to be used. They lengthened the existing deck and replaced the decking with TREX. They even suggested the design and border for the deck. They built the sunroom and created a roof design that channeled the water runoff to the cistern. They roofed the new area, matched the siding to the existing siding and painted all the back of the house. The inside of the sunroom has stained siding and roofing with an open design. The windows have removable screens and glass panels and storage was built to hold them during the off season. The covered patio has matching stained ceiling.

Response from WM. D. Herboth Remodeling Inc.
Thank you, for the great review and for choosing our company to work on your sunroom. It was our privilege to work on your project.
The Herboths are gracious, humorous and creative. When we originally sat down with Doug, he did a walk-through of our home. He got a sense of how we live, and what our future needs might be. In short, he approached the project in an organic and holistic fashion. The result of that first meeting was a series of highly inventive but practical drawings. After we decided on the route to take, a detailed and user friendly contract was submitted. The specifics were clear, payment schedule fair, and timeline reasonable. Work commenced as promised, and every step of the way was handled with dignity and professionalism. Two critical points need to be a vital part of this review. 1) Herboth Remodeling was always aware of the hardship and stress placed on a family living through a remodel. They were sensitive to potential awkwardness and frustration, so everyday ( yes, everyday) they left the worksite in clean and orderly fashion. They knew we still lived in their construction zone, so they made it livable and tidy. Always, always, always, our comfort was top of their priorities. 2) Herboth Remodeling was a joy to work with if surprises popped up. Because our home is a 1904 farmhouse, there were structural challenges. We would have to make decisions based on information that was not available until the bones of the house were exposed. The Herboths were quick thinking, full of ideas, and ultimately understanding if we made changes. They offered advice, were great listeners, maintained humor, and made u-turns with grace. Our experience was so rewarding, we have hired Herboth Remodeling multiple times. All homeowners should be so blessed.
Description of Work: We own a 1904 farmhouse. In the past five years, we have contracted with Herboth Remodeling to do significant upgrades to our lovely home. In every case, the work has been extraordinary and the staff delightful. Although our most current job (October 2010) included window replacement and full exterior painting ($12,000), for this glowing report I would like to focus on the sizable remodel that was executed in spring of 2007. Herboth remodeling added a 10' x 12' diningroom, a 15' x 12' bedroom with 6'x12' deck, completely upgraded our kitchen, transformed a small bedroom into a suite with bath, and added a glorious 15'x 12' deck. This magnificent makeover was completed on time, with graciousness and humor and on budget (approximately $150, 000 including our change order requests ). I measure the success of any remodel on how effectively it honors the source material, and, when completed, how the finished product looks. We have a brand new old house that appears to be original. The level of craft is superb. The modern infrastructure upgrades are handy and comforting. In technical terms, old galvanized pipes were replaced with ABS. All electrical was updated. The new construction consisted of building a new foundation, laying all flooring, constructing all walls and adding/replacing roof. All finish work consisted of taping/mudding, priming and painting. Additionally, an original vintage built-in was installed. The work in the kitchen included relocating gaslines (stove) , relocating waterlines(sink) and removal of obsolete chimney.

To whom it may concern: Herboth Remodeling are an established reputable contractor in our neighborhood. We knew of their reputation and work quality as several of our friends had had success with them in various projects. Their primary person Glenn worked closely with my wife and advised best options and timing to replace our roof. The project was undertaken quickly and performed flawlessly. We have had numerous comments from neighbors and friends as to the quality and appearance of the job. We trust Herboth Remodeling and Glenn specifically as our ongoing remodel and construction provider. We also will use them to gain advice on future projects re home repair and perhaps even design advice. I met his father Doug and know of his grandfather William D (founder) who reviewed the job at various points. They are all significant contributors in our community and know they have our best interest in all of their work and advice. I would not hesitate to call on them again and most certainly will recommend them to any of our friends and family with remodeling needs in the future. Sincerely, Paul Brandes & Family
Description of Work: Herboth re-roofed our house made repairs to our chimney, mounted a flat screen TV and performed minor repairs in our house. They advised us on future remodeling and repairs.
Description of Work: We've used Herboths for several projects of varying types. The latest project involved deconstructing a shed housing the piping for a sprinkler system and replacing it with a level surface. Done perfectly, quickly and beautifully. They have hung doors, installed garage ladders, outdoor hose bibs, and they are currently replacing a tile entryway and linoleum bathroom floor. I never have to worry about quality, whether they will be there on time or if work will be completed as promised. They are pleasant, ethical, flexible, and delightful to work with.

We ran into unexpected problems (it is a very old house!) with the remodel which required more work than we had originally anticipated -- the Herboth's are very professional and explained, in detail, the additional work required to shore up our home's structural integrity. Work was performed was professional and high quality.
Description of Work: Major remodel of entire upstairs of home (3 bedrooms), plus living room. Work included: Strip all walls to studs New dry wall Paint Raised ceiling in one bed room New hardwood floors through upstairs Major structural improvements Rebuild and reinforce stair case
When we contacted Herboth Remodeling, their response was courteous & timely. They got all the information they needed & then took about one week to prepare a bid. The next appointment was a detailed discussion of all our options & the costs involved. We went & looked at the possible materials. In the next meeting, we confirmed our choices. In just a few days, they came back with the bid we accepted. The windows were ordered, and when they came in, the actual work promptly began. There was a problem with one of the windows. We did not see it, but Brian did. He called Glen and in a few days, the replacement was delivered. They pay careful attention to details that we may not have noticed. They have intense pride in their work, and integrity that greatly impressed us. These fellows work from morning 'til evening. Each day they would tell us exactly what they intended to accomplish. They were always on time, and cleaned up before they left. When it was clear that the old interior frames & molding were useless, we got to see what Herboth Remodeling truely excells at - Problem Solving. These men are not intimitaded by difficulty. They got the right wood, the right stain, and the finished product looks totally original. It matches all the other trim in the house. We got a Custom Job, that is technically brilliant & very beautiful. If you believe the phrase "You get what you pay for", Herboth Remodeling will fulfill your expectations, and then some.
Description of Work: This is a family owned & operated business. Doug is the father & Glen & Brian are his sons. Their combined knowledge & skills cover all facets of any project they undertake. Your job is a "custom" job. They are committed to your satisfaction. From the bid offer to the final walk through, they are professional. We contracted for the replacement of all the windows in our home. When it became clear that the old interior frame and molding could not be used, they gave us a bid on doing all the necessary interior work. There was no "change order" charge. It took some additional time to get all the detail work completed. They did all the framing and placement of the new windows. They did the dry wall and painting for the interior to match. During this time, Glen & Brian stayed in close contact with us. Only when the Herboths and we were satisfied with the entire job, were we presented with the final bill. Everyday Glen & Brian were on time, and cleaned up before they left.

As described previously, I had and still have a great working relationship with Doug. He is honest and straight forward. I never felt apprehensive about asking to change something I did not like. His pricing is fair. There may be bids that are lower, but I prefer to work with someone I am comfortable with. In all the projects, the planning, pricing, design and scheduling was handled by Doug. The actual work was done for the most part by his Sons, who are very amiable and friendly. Doug frequently stops by the job site to check on progress and trouble shoot any problems that may occur. I know that he is trying to phase down his involvement as reaches retirement, but I suspect he will always be involved with the company. I highly recommend WM.D Herboth Remodeling for your remodeling projects. I have been very happy to date with the work completed.
Description of Work: Project #1. In the fall of 2005, Doug and Sons installed a patio cover (pergola) over my patio. I showed Doug a picture of the cover from a Sunset Magazine special issue on patio covers. He and I discussed the dimensions, types of wood available and how the structure would be attached to the roof and into the existing patio. He gave me a bid. I contacted a second contractor (out of the phone book) and had the same discussions. Their bids were virtually the same, although the second contractor was less flexible in the type of wood that he would use (fir versus cedar). I selected Doug because I preferred using someone I knew (Doug and I are members of the same church), rather than someone completely unknown to me. Even if I had not known Doug previously, he just came across as more friendly and approachable than the other contractor. Ultimately, the project worked out great. It was in a relatively short amount of time (during a time when all contractors were quite busy). Project #2. In the fall of 2007, Doug and Sons completed a remodeling project that involved new counter tops, cabinets and appliances in the Kitchen. Because I was so pleased with the work done previously, I selected Doug without soliciting other bids. This project involved a lot of ideas that I had planned for years, and Doug was great at helping me make these ideas reality. He did not try to force his ideas on me. He was also very helpful in making sure I was protected with warranty issues with the counter top installers, as they had not planned correctly on where a critical seam was placed. Project #3. in the Fall of 2009, Doug and Sons completed the remodeling of my laundry area and installation of a sliding patio door. Again I used Doug without getting competitive bids. The project was completed on time and has worked out beautifully. I will continue to use Doug and Sons and any future project I undertake.

It went absolutely wonderful--better than we could have imagined.
Description of Work: I spent a long time contacting a number of remodellers and getting bids. I chose Herboths because they responded immediately and were very positive about being able to do everything I wanted and broke down the cost of each part of the work and hours it would take. I wanted a small bathroom put in upstairs which required an enlargement of the old dormer. They explained how they could do it without needing a new roof ( it is aluminum and the other remodellers said I would need a new one) and they could also get it done in 30 days. This was the nicest part--to know we would have it done so quickly and not have it drag on and on through the summer. Herboths came on the day they said they would and it was done 30 days later and everyone who sees it is amazed at how nice it is. They also added nice features such as shelves in the hallway and a storage closet in the bedroom with their design and special lighting to accomodate some artwork. This cost also included having our roof insulated. They have also followed up on any things that needed checking on and guarentee their work. You may be able to get a lower bid than Herboths but in the end Herboths will save you money with how effieciently and carefully they do the work with quality materials. I highly recommend them for any work.

Our latest project, which was dealing with dry rot on the south side of the house was a great example of how well Herboth's care for their client. It might have been easier and a bigger bill for them to replace all our windows, but they chose a more conservative approach, which was less intrusive for us and less costly as well. I asked that they finish before Thanksgiving and they were able to make that happen.
Description of Work: Herboths first worked on our house in the mid 1980's. First project was a bathroom remodel. Then we had the upstairs windows replaced on our old house. Their work--from estimate to completion was always excellent. On every project we knew we would not return home to a mess. They always cleaned up before they would leave. When we were considering a major remodel to our house, we did not even seek other bids. But Herboths knew their limitations in this case and urged us to hire an architect. In our latest project as well as all the others, they were able to meet their project deadlines, even in the face of iffy weather.

Excellet work!!! Had old upper deck over porch that looked good with 1910 house, but was a bad design. Had obviously leaked since house was built and roof and porch was in danger of collapsing. Corner support of porch was also tilting. WMD Herboth Remodeling came up with a plan to repair and rebuild all so it looked like the original design. Saved us the cost of an architect. No way could we have attemped to do this ourselves and have gotten the same results. This was major work and they did it in their estimated time. Was some small addtitional costs to fix items uncovered during the tear off but tottally reasonable. Overall they did great work on a very hard job.
Description of Work: Came up with a way to replace upper deck over a porch that matched the house's 1910 design. Tear off of existing roof, rebuild of upper deck including replacement of rotted supports, matched railing to style of esisting lower porch, matched existing siding that needed to be replaced, floored deck with durable long life covering. Had to straighten, shore up, and put in new concrete under corner support piller.

I am going to have to say that everything went just great. They did an excellent job with everything. The house and the garage looks just wonderful and I have no problems. I am very pleased with the way everything had turned out. I was very impressed with the intelligence of the company and the respectfulness that they brought along with them.
Description of Work: Herbotht turned my single attached garage into a 12 X 12 living space. They gutted it and totally remodeled it. They installed all the new drywall and did electrical as well.
