They were on time, up front with all the costs, and did exactly what they promised. They gave advice on what to tell the painters. Highly recommended!

See above. If you want the good fortune of having them do your sash windows, you'd better call well in advance to get on their schedule. They book months out, all on no advertising other than word of mouth. (That's why it's all the more remarkable that they came over to do the repair immediately -- on a Sunday).

My husband and I could not have been happier with Zoe's and Mitch's work. They love what they do and it shows. They completely transformed 16 windows in our house and made them beautiful and functional again. They encountered some pretty challenging windows on this job and greeted each obstacle with resourcefulness and hard work. In addition, to their excellent work, Zoe and Mitch also happen to be warm and delightful people. A welcome bonus!

The Sash Man has restored 8 windows that were painted shut in out home. They do amazing work, are wonderful to work with and very reasonably priced.

Mitch and Zoe are the most competent craftsman we have experienced during our 33 years of living in Portland. They are pleasant and fun to work with, experts at their craft, going beyond expectations to deliver working windows that have been painted shut for decades. They protect everything and clean up everything each night. We couldn't be happier and have referred them to friends who have enjoyed a similar experience. Thanks, Sash Man.

Mitch and Gail are master craftsmen who bring old-world style attention to detail and pride in workmanship to everything they do. Watching them work is like seeing an episode of This Old House where one gets an inkling of all the myriad factors which distinguish truly exceptional work from the every-day run-of-the-mill it's good enough product.

i recently bought a small house originally built in 1926 in the close-in NE neighborhood and moved in knowing the windows had all been painted shut sometime in the remote past. i was assured with the purchase that they could be opened. in searching for a simple window opener on angie's list, i came across these guys. after a couple phone calls to set expectations and appointments, they came out and in two days had four of my 1926 windows stripped, reset and glazed where they needed it, and rehung with brand new ropes. the windows work beautifully. so smooth, and let the cool air in the bottom while letting the hot air out the top. i had looked into having the windows completely replaced, but because most of them were larger than average in current standards (approx 55and quot;Wx52and quot;H), the cost to replace them for the whole house and have them look similar was and gt;$12k. i'm so glad i decided to retain my home's original aesthetic and function. zoe and mitch even gave me handy tips around my house while they worked that i'm still using! couldn't be more pleased with their work.

We live in a 1923 bungalow with all of its original windows. When we bought the house three years ago, none of the windows functioned. We had to use dowels to hold the windows up, or we couldn't open them because they had been painted shut. It was distressing to think that we would have to replace them. Then we were told about Mitch and Gail from Sash Man. After three years, all of our windows are fully functional and we get to enjoy their original beauty.
I'll never forget when they came the first time being told that when they were finished, both the top and bottom windows (all of our windows are double-hung) would fully function. They just smiled when I said that our windows weren't that type. Now, we can easily raise or lower each section with one finger. We lower the upper window in our kitchen when it gets too hot, and all that warm air flows right out. Both Mitch and Gail are delightful people, and are willing to take the time to explain what they are doing and why they are doing it. A special thanks to Mitch for his tips on how to do other jobs I need to do around the house.

They arrived when they said they would and worked throughout the day in our then unheated house. They were able to complete the work on time and the windows work as new. They also recommended someone to restore our Povey stained glass window and build a couple new sashes for the rotten ones on the south side of our house. The advice they provided for subcontractors was outstanding.
We couldn't be happier with their work. One mishap was that our large front window cracked during restoration. They were absolutely devastated and worked with us to find an acceptable solution. In our opinion going far beyond what was necessary or would be expected. I wouldn't hesitate to recommended them to anyone.
We're going to have them back later in the year to work on the next batch of windows.

We were so pleased with the work done for us by The Sash Man. From the time of our first call all contact has been professional, prompt and friendly. At the estimate the project was completely explained concerning how repairs would be made, what time would be involved, what options were open to us to reduce cost and what a final cost would be. We were delighted that there was a space in their busy calendar to take on our small job, scheduling that worked very well for us. We also appreciated phone calls to confirm the schedule.
On the workday, the project began exactly on time and carried through smoothly to end with our complete satisfaction. We got exactly what we’d asked for and it was all accomplished with superior craftsmanship. I must remark that it was also a very enjoyable day for my husband and me because these people are so very comfortable to have in your home. They are kind, friendly and sharing. We appreciate the time they took to explain how and why the work was done. Also they took the time to explain and teach so we could best accomplish the window painting we would do ourselves. Clean-up was thorough and quick. This company has our highest regard and we look forward to using their services in the future.

These are outstanding people!! They are prompt, courteous and friendly; and best of all, provide outstanding, historically accurate craftsmanship work; all at a reasonable price. They even taught me how to strip old paint off my woodwork. Mitchel and Gail are true professionals and I cannot say enough good things about them. Mitchel even helped my kitchen contractor reinstall my stove on his own time. If you have an older home that you love and believe in good stewardship of historical homes hire the Sash Man Window Repair!! I thought my windows were beyond repair. They were painted shut with years of lead paint, some of the "wavy" glass was cracked and lots of dry rot in the wood. If you have a similar situation, have them come out for a free estimate. Don't be tempted to replace your windows with new vinyl windows. I have beautiful windows now and with the new glazing, they keep out the weather just fine. I love these guys!!

The are in demand so there is a long wait list. What they do and most of the cost is described up front, so when your schedule comes up, you know what to expect. I booked them for two days (2 double hung windows/day, or two sashes) and decided exactly what to do the night before they came. They (Mitchel Sprinking and wife) called night before to confirm, and showed up on time. Either they did not tell me or I forgot, but didn't realize they were going to strip exterior and interior outside surface of window--which requires I repaint. I was aware they would strip channel for double hung windows and reset rope and weights. Windows, both top and bottom, work slick with one hand. I was charged extra for some glazing that needed to be done, plus setting frame with screw so windows can be removed easily for painting. But given the workmanship, pride, and final product, the cost was acceptabl--approximately 10% extra. If I was to do it again, I would have hardware, that was lost over the years on-hand so it could be installed with the windows the right way--not the way I would end up doing it because of my lack of craftmanship.

No one else seems willing to have the skill, patience and know how to repair old windows. The Sprinklings are organized, efficient, and wildly experienced in this area. They are friendly, show up on time, do the work well, and leave everything spotless. Of course for this kind of service and skill, you will not get any sort of discounts, but your windows will be good to use for years to come. Also, they are booked about 6 months out.

Mitchel Sprinkling is a rare artisan, capable of transforming the nearly archaeological remnants of a brilliant 19th century design for infinitely variable opening sash windows to a fully functioning like-new ventilation system. He works quickly with superior attention to the quality of the work and the impact of the work process on the interior of the home. He educates the owners as to the design and ideal maintenance of the windows (an important factor since he doesn't re-paint surfaces he must strip to achieve maximum smoothness of operation). The pricing is reasonable, especially compared with putting in new windows from scratch which might not have the advantages (and certainly not the old-world charm) of the originals.
