Hi, my name is Joy. I am a certified Oregon teacher endorsed in Language Arts. I am prepared to help learners of all ages. As a tutor, I consider the student's learning style preference, interests, and learning level. I have taught in elementary classrooms. I have tutored in college writing centers. No matter the level, I make learning a Joy!

Services we offer
For two years, I have tutored elementary students in after school programs in the SE Portland/Gresham area. I teach a basic reading program that starts with phonetic consonant and vowel sound/letter identification. Students practice phonemes to create pathways and strengthen phonemic processing. As students master sounds, I teach prefix, suffix, and root words using analogies. Reading comprehension activities like story boards, charades, and fill in the blanks make reading fun.

After I called Joy to find out more about her experience, we set up a meeting time at the library. The first time my son met her, they talked about what we were doing this summer, camping, fishing, etc. Then, she gave him a pre-test. She was really reassuring and my son liked the flashcard cartoons. She gave me a copy of the pre-test results at the end of the tutoring session. We set up a tutoring schedule for the summer. She explained that my son would benefit from twice a week sessions.
Joy was always on-time and waiting for us at the library with all of her supplies. She had a magnet board, worksheets, and a coloring reading book. After every tutoring session, she would tell me about the lesson and new things he was learning. Half way through the summer, I noticed my son sounding out street signs in the car. He would sometimes talk about what Joy had taught him at the dinner table.
At the end of the summer, she gave him the coloring reading books to take home. She also gave him a post-test that was exactly the same as the pre-test. He was excited and happy that he knew a lot more of the flashcards. She gave me the results to take home. He is definitely more confident going into 2nd grade. And maybe next year I will look her up again. I took her business card to show my son's teacher and would totally recommend her services to our friends.
Our studies quickly went from frustration to fun. The additional information Joy had was helpful as well. She has a great strategy to teach poor learners like myself. By our third lesson I was very comfortable and we were pounding through the subjects I needed the most help with. What I needed was some personal attention with someone who enjoys teaching. Joy is an amazing and inspirational character. Within weeks I was caught up in my class. By the end of the term I earned an A- on the final. I would have crashed and burned if it wasn't for the help of this Joyful stranger.
