It went great. Steve McBee's crew had to dig down 13 feet to repair my sewer line. I hired Steve and waited for his availability because I had heard nothing but FABULOUS things about his work. I heard that "he is the best in the city, that the city permit folks love working with him and that he puts everything back the way he found it." This was all I needed to hear. Honestly, I had to wait for him a couple of months, BUT he was DEFINITELY worth the wait, and I would wait for him again. His crew was the hardest working crew I have ever had do repair at my house. Even my neighbors said that. I didn't really like spending that kind of money on a sewer repair, but I feel so much better that I will not have a back up in my fairly new remodeled basement! Steve explained all the details to me and all the costs were up front. He even added a T line to the garage for future water from the garage. I have passed his name onto 2 other friends and keep his name/number handy. What does that tell you? Enough said!!!

The City came out to do work on the sewer line in front of my house and indicated that I might want to get the line to the house sleeved. They agreed to leave their hole open, so long as I got this job done in a timely manner. When I had estimators look at the job, no clean out valve could be found.
The bid was 3200 to 4000, dependent on several things. The 3200 bid was about $1000 lower than the previous bid I had gotten from someone else. And better than a third bid where the bidder was unable to get down into the city's hole to look at the situation because of a bad knee.
I signed a contract with McBee because of the bid and the positive things I heard about him. Although I was expecting to get the work done in about three weeks, I got a call from Steve saying that he thought they would be able to work my job in the next week because some other job they were doing had to be put on hold due to the equipment needed.
Their equipment and a portapotty showed up the day before they were due. They were on time first thing in the morning. They put down plywood to protect my grass and the were able to sling a large rhoddie which has survived well. I did lose hostas--and it was left to me to go through the dirt pile to retrieve them. [Note: if you have a flower bed near the work, clean out the bulbs before the workmen get there.]
One difficulty that was discovered was that the clean out drain for my house had been dry walled and tiled over so it complicated figuring out what was going on. The hope was that this company would be able to open a hole close to my front porch, find a good part of the 106 year old pipe, and attach a new PVC pipe from there to the street. However, once the hole was dug the pipe was in such bad condition, that they were unable to attach new pipe to it so they ended up having to come into the basement, cut through the concrete floor, dig another hole, and at that point sleeve between old installation out to the street. Since the original bid had been based on the exterior hole, I was dreading getting the final bill.
The job was finished in two days, the hole in the basement and the clean out valve were installed under a cabinet near the wall and the work looked really good. The soil outside was packed back in and the yard looked largely undisturbed. The city came out and refilled their hole, compacting the soil with equipment that made my house shake and the paintings on the wall dance.
Then disaster (well, okay, a pimple) struck. We had a day of torrential rains. In less than an hour I had an inch of water covering my basement. Luckily it was clean smelling. I called the city and the McBees. Got the city, left messages for the Mc Bees. City came out and decided it was not their fault and that it was not a burst water pipe. Steve called about 11 p.m. and after hearing the story indicated that there was no way it could be their fault but that he would have someone out at my place first thing the next day. Sure enough, his crew of three showed up.
I think I mentioned having two huge 100+ year old trees out front? One is an elm tree and every spring it produces millions of seeds about the size of a penny. That spring because we had had so little rain, the seeds had piled up on the porch roof, unnoticed until they were washed into the gutters and clogged the drains which then could not carry the rain away from the house. The crew cleaned out my front gutter and then left for their regular job. So far, knock on wood, there has been no more water in the basement. The sewer is working great, and I am singing the praises of this company. Their bid--well it still came in under the $4000 top.
By the way, when I mentioned the McBee company to city workers--supervisors, street repairmen, inspectors--no one came right out and made a recommendation, but after the work was done, all of them said things that were very complimentary of the work that McBee Excavating does. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

This contractor is fantastic! I would never choose any other sewer contractor to work with. Steve and his team were exceptional in getting all the work done on our sewer repair, they were efficient, timely, and communicated any unexpected issues throughout the entire project. Steve also went above and beyond and negotiated with the City on all required work due to a connected/party line. His communication and responsiveness are outstanding. This team is very obviously committed to what they do, how they do it, and the importance of good customer service. As homeowners, we are very aware of the enormity and stress of a sewer repair. I urge you to use this company for all of your sewer needs, it will be well worth it.

After a couple of sewer scopes during the home sale/search process, I asked for an estimate for the sewer repair. Mike let me know what was going on prior to the work. We set a date a few weeks before the work was scheduled and he kept me up to date as the schedule neared and he was wrapping up other jobs. The majority of the job took three days but there were some delays with the plumber and city inspections that strung things out a little. Mike communicated well during the delay and made it easy to work around his work. There was a significant amount of work inside the basement, including removing portions of the basement slab and excavation. There was little disruption to the family (work was done while we were at work/school), things were clean at the end of each day and there was little dust and dirt. Good contractor; I would have no hesitation in hiring McBee again for either sewer scope or sewer repair work.

They were on time and the men who did the work were wonderful, worked hard, and always kept me informed as to what was going on. I would definitely recommend them. My only frustration was getting call backs when I was trying to schedule the work. Once it was scheduled it was an excellent experience!

All phases of this project went as planned. No surprises. I was very pleased with all aspects of McBee's service and highly recommend them to potential clients. Not pushy. Very honest and upfront. And they gave good refrences for other service providers when the job was not one for them.

We live on a lot that is four feet above the sidewalk and heavily landscaped. When Italked to other contractors, they said they would have to remove our large Camellia. McBee said he could work around it. I was worried when I saw what the yard looked like when they were working. They had an eight-foot hole and there was a mountain of dirt, but when they were finished it looked as if they had never been there. I would definitely hire them again, but don't expect I'll ever need to.

This is the second time I used this company and the gentleman was timely and professional. Due to the lack of a sewer clean-out, he had to use an approach on the roof, and had to reschedule. The inspection was done the following day and the report followed later in the week - all good to go.

Steve McBee was recommended independently by both our realtor agent and our home inspector for a sewer inspection on a property we purchased. We were able to schedule him on short notice and arrange to be onsite during the sewer scope. He was also able to offer pragmatic advice on issues that came up during the inspection. A narrated CD of the scope was handed to us at the end of the inspection.

I have been using this company for years to do my sewer scope inspections. They are reliable, honest, thorough, professional and priced very well. After a bad experience with another sewer inspector, these guys are the best.

The McBee folks are highly professional and knowledgeable-that's clear from the moment you meet them. They arrived on time, had checked city records, and then proceeded to scope the sewer, explaining to us as they did so what we were seeing on the screen. The man who conducted the scope narrated the findings, and provided on the spot a copy of a video for us to have of the results. Nicely done! We also got a very good quality visual survey of the property, including discussion of the sewer line's jog across the fence to the neighbor's property. The McBee folks offered us options for working with the current path of the line, or running it out through the front of the house. We got their bid soon afterward. Although we didn't end up hiring them to do the sewer line replacement (their bid was somewhat higher than the one we chose with another), we were so impressed by their knowledge and service that I would like to hire them to replace the line at our new house. As we received other bids from contractors, they heard that McBee had been out to scope, and every one of them was highly positive about the company. That says something. They're clearly top-notch.

They have just been the most thorough and the most savvy with the sewer systems. They make sure the landscaping around the area they work on is not disturbed. Great company to work with.

We were forced by a neighbor to unhook from a party sewer line, and got great recommendations from several sources from McBee. These guys were not the cheapest bid by any means. While it pained us to put out that amount of money for something we thought was unnecessary, I have to say the job they did was excellent. I would agree with other posters that these guys can be hard to get a hold of, but I expect it's because they're busy because they're so good and get so much word-of-mouth promo. If it isn't a rush job, they're totally worth the wait. They dug up most of our front yard, connected new sewer line into our house, and had everything back in place in two days. They subbed out the concrete work to replace walkways and it also was very nicely done. Very little damage was done to moved shrubs, and they cleaned up really well. When the covered up hole sunk down a bit, they came right back and refilled it in. I'd have them do any other excavating job we had to do.

Chris showed up exactly when said to do the sewer work and gave me a report of what he found from the scope. He took a couple days to come back with the estimate for work but that was after talking with Steve and looking up permits. Scheduling the work took a little while, only because they were busy with all the other jobs they had. When they had an opening they contacted me and we started the work. They showed up exactly when stated, and walked me through all steps of what they were doing and had to do.They made themselves available for any questions I had and put me at ease when they had to do more work describing everything they did. When original idea wouldn't work due to the line they made sure that the work they did would last as long as we live in this house. When they finished they put the front yard back to what it was. (I actually think it looks better.) Final price was higher than what they estimated, but that was due to the extent of the work done and still wasn't too much more.

Steve and his crew did excellent work and came highly recommended from many sources. The work was done quickly (in just one day), and our lives were very minimally disrupted. The only complaint I have is that Steve was very hard to get a hold of. It took months for us to get an estimate out of him after the inspection. Then it took everal more weeks before we could reach him again to schedule the work. It was very frustrating, and we very nearly went with another company. In the end I'm glad we worked things out with Steve, because he did really good work at a reasonable price. The reason it's hard to get a hold of him is because he keeps so busy, so I suppose that's the price you pay for using the most popular sewer guy in town!

I am very pleased with this company. They replaced my sewer line from the house to the street. The job was done in about 24 hours. It is obvious that they have done this a lot. When they left my property, you could not tell that they had been here. Even the lawn grass was saved and looked great. Since then two of my next door neighbors have used this company and have had good experiences with the company as well.
