Wonderful work. Steve really takes pride in what he does and has a good eye for design and detail. To top it off, he's probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Description of Work: In 2003 we bought a smaller house to retire to and rented it out for 3 years which turned out to be May of 2012! In the meantime the kitchen cupboards had been marred by some of the tenants and Steve took on the refinishing of them. However when he brought them back for rehanging the finish was uneven. It turns out he had his highschool son work on those. So when we told him, he supervised their redo. He was trying to bring his son into the business, and both learned a lesson. In the last year my daughter had her bathroom remodeled and it went well for a house built in 1897 that's been slowly redone in various past decades.

We had always needed a fan in the bathroom, but one gold-plated contractor we contacted wanted a ridiculous amount of money to do it. I asked Steve Edgren if he was interested, and was glad he was found the time for this relatively small job. I knew Steve well already, since he had done numerous carpentry jobs at my place over the past six years, including some structural reinforcements and window work in an attic storage area, and finish carpentry in a child's play area. In particular I had confidence that his water-sealing of the roof elements (critical in rainy Portland) would be good, since we've had some of that work for six years and it's never leaked. With the bathroom fan, we were fortunate wiring was already in place, but the installation was tricky because the venting ductwork had to run through a maze of struts, etc. near the eave of the house, and it was a difficult location to access. Nonetheless Steve and his associate did the work in less than a day and left everything neat and clean. The price was exactly what we agreed to, and now our bathroom is a much nicer place to be.
Description of Work: Steve and his associate installed a bathroom vent fan, including a tricky venting passage through the roof.

This is the third porch redo that Steve has worked on. Our family owns nine rental homes in the Hawthorne area and Steve knows what is needed on homes of that age. He is infinitely reliable and shows up on time. He draws up a plan and sends photographs of before and after. His quotes are not cheap, but they are for solid handsome workmanship done on time. He does additional handywork as needed, both in carpentry and house repair. A really clever guy!
Description of Work: No one does a porch update better than Steve Edgren. Actually, I have to be truthful and say that Steve had been renting this house from us, and when he decided to move on, we thought that the porch definitely needed some repairs. The reinforcement, leveling, appearance and safety all were factors that figured into the plan. He went right to work on what was needed. He also did some additional work such as trimming eaves and gutters so they would drain better, and putting in a small drywell to collect water from the yard. That was an additional cost to the porch bid which was 4000 with an addtl 2000 for the water collection.

He did a great job! At the beginning he prepared a comprehensive proposal with visuals and he worked with me on defining the projects. He worked well and managed to get a great deal of work done in the amount of time allocated for the projects. I'm pleased.

From the first appointment, which he kept at the exact time we agreed upon, he listened carefully to my description of the work I wished to have performed. He asked questions about details and offered suggestions that were relevant. He explained his process and the quality of the materials he used. We discussed the problem of the weather (rain) and how it might effect length of the job. Later that day he e-mailed me a job proposal which included the detailed scope of the work and the materials, cost and timing. I subsequently accepted his proposal and he submitted a contract which was also accepted. Work began; the weather was responsible for a few delays but fence and gates were completed within five days! Everything was done excellently despite the terrible weather. I recommend Steven Edgren Carpentry LLC without reservation. Mr. Edgren displayed integrity, creativity, responsibility and optimism throughout the project.
Description of Work: Mr. Edgren removed and disposed of my damaged and rotted fence and gates and constructed an absolutely beautiful new fence and gates.

from start to finish Steve was very good to work with. I live in a different state and coordinated the work via email and phone. Steve prepared for the project by taking pictures of the area, then, creating a draft drawing of the finished railing. On the day of the install, he arrived on time, was very personable, and got the work done in the time frame he committed to.
Description of Work: Steve built a wooden railing for front yard steps at my mom's house north of Portland. The railing was required as my mom needed support as she walked up or down the steps to get from her front door to the sidewalk. The completed railing is beautiful, and, even a year later still gets compliments from her friends and neighbors. Steve treated the project not just as a basic wood railing, but as something that would compliment her house and be attractive.

Steve has already done several jobs for us since we first hired him in 2008. The family has several rentals that needed some basic TLC such as rebuilding screen doors, small electrical nuisances resolved, and clearing and fixing water leak issues in an antique Queen Anne house. We expected this job to go as it usually does with Steve, quickly and straight forward with no time wasted. He did encounter some problems however, so the job took him twice as long as expected, which he conscienciously worked through, at no additional cost to satisfy the contract price.
Description of Work: Steve thoroughly researched and evaluated the rebuilding of a porch on a house built in the 1920's. The main column supports and the deck and steps were rotting and slumping. He went underneath and took photos to show us the problems and drew professional diagrams to show the proposed solutions. He kept the renovation in line with the house's architecture. He carefully matched the repainting to the rest of the house.

I contacted Steve via email and ultimately followed up with him via phone. I explained the work I needed done. Steve drove the hour to Columbia City to look at the steps and take pictures, providing a drawing of the railing, an estimate of the costs, suggestions and recommendations on improvements. He took a lot of care to make the railing hand-crafted woodwork and not a 'handicapped' railing. The results exceeded Mom's, my sister and my expectations. Several of Mom's friends use canes and they appreciated the addition of the railing and complimented Mom on the design and finished product. I don't live in the area and since I did all the coordination to find someone to make the railing, I appreciated Steve's willingness to work through email, take the time to drive to Columbia City, and be very easy and nice to work with.
Description of Work: At my mom's house in Columbia City, Steve built a railing for a set of gradiated steps, leading from the front walkway to the sidewalk. The steps were put in several years ago to avoid her walking down the driveway, which is very steep. The railing was needed to provide a handhold when using the steps. Working with his assistant Cliff, Steve built the railing in one day, including sinking the posts into concrete. Made from cedar, the railing mirrored the rise in the steps, and included a decorative handhold. Copper post caps were added, including a mix of plain copper and solar LED copper. We agreed on a day and time and Steve arrived promptly, was very personable and easy to work with. He completed the work in one day, including the concrete, sealing the wood and adding the post caps. The end result is a gorgeous railing that has got nothing but rave reviews from Mom, her neighbors and friends.

I want to write another glowing report about Steve. He recently fixed our portion of our roof and did so, as he always does, on time, on budget, punctually and professionally. We purchased new gutters. When the installers for the gutters tore off a portion of the old gutters they thought that they found a hole in our roof (into our living room.) They immediately stopped work and told us that we needed to replace that portion of the roof. This happened the week of Thanksgiving. I called Steve and he was on the job the day after Thanksgiving (Friday 11/28). It took less than one day to finish and he even came back on Saturday (11/29) to replace a light fixture that wasn't going to work because of the new gutters (at no extra charge) plus a couple other things that needed to be done. He is great to work with and always willing to do a little something extra if we ask. He also understands that my husband and I are not "craftsmen" so he explains everything in a way that we understand exactly how each project is going to work and the process it takes to get the job done. We highly recommend Steve for any kind of carpentry project.
