Background information: I had already bought 2 ceiling fans that I had planned on having installed. When I needed to have my living room and kitchen ceiling repaired because of an upstairs neighbor's faucet leak, I asked the contractors for a recommendation for an electrician. Their office, JR Johnson, recommended Squires Electrical.
Since this is a new condo, there was an electrical junction box already in my bedroom ceiling ready to install either a light or ceiling fan. For this fan, all the electrician needed to do was pop the cap off the ceiling and install the fan (he did put the fan together for me. He commented that the model I bought was very simple to put together).
I wanted the second fan to be installed in the living room. Since, in the course of needing to replace my ceiling, there was a 12 foot by 10 foot hole in my ceiling anyway, I figured that it would be easier to install the fan while the repair work was being done.
Now this room did necessitate having an electrical junction box installed, and a wire run from my front door light as a power source. (I chose to have the ceiling fan instead of the front door light so the fan could be controlled by the single already installed light switch. I didn't use the front door light anyway).
Because the ceiling repair was still going on, the electrician was able to install the electrical junction box and the wire from the existing junction box that was for the front door light. But, because the ceiling still needed to be finished and painted, the electrician needed to return after the ceiling was painted to install the fan. I WAS VERY CLEAR -- I COULD NOT TAKE THE FOLLOWING MONDAY OFF TO HAVE THE FAN INSTALLED. It HAD to be completed BEFORE MONDAY!!! The electrician knew, understood, and agreed to this. His office, however, found the concept too complicated to understand. I even called to let the office know the ceiling would be OK that Friday to have the electrician install the fan. I was told to expect the electrician by noon.
Friday came, and no electrician. He was supposed to be at my condo at noon. So I called the office. I spoke to a man. I asked where was the electrician; I had waited until after noon to call. Oh, he said, he's scheduled to come on Monday. AGAIN, I explained that I could not be off work on Monday. I had been off work for a week, and the fan had to be installed before Monday. The office man's response? OK, we'll send him out on TUESDAY!!!!!! [At this point I was just a little exasperated. I thought I was quite clear, so I repeated, again, IT HAD TO BE INSTALLED BEFORE MONDAY. I COULD NOT TAKE OFF ANY MORE TIME FROM WORK!] Office Man's response was, well, we'll have to send the electrician on Saturday since he was already dispatched to other calls that day, and did I understand that they couldn't guarantee that an electrician would be available on such short notice?!!! Office Man did not seem to understand that it had already been decided to send the electrician to my condo on Friday so he could complete his job!!!
Before the electrical installation work began, I had asked over the phone for an estimate of the cost. I had been told, verbally, that it could be in the range of $550 (later I found out that this figure was based on the installation of TWO electrical junction boxes). When I called and spoke to both the ceiling contractor (who recommended Squires) and woman at Squires, I stated SEVERAL times that the INSTALLATION OF THE CEILING FANS WERE TO BE BILLED TO ME, NOT MY INSURANCE COMPANY WHO WAS COVERING THE REPAIRS TO MY CEILING. That seems fairly straightforward. I told my insurance agent as well that the electrical installation of the ceiling fans were NOT part of the ceiling repair and should be billed to me.
It is now the middle of June and I still have not received a bill from Squires. I called today and found out that they submitted their bill to JR Johnson, the contractors who were being paid by my insurance company to repair my ceiling.
I almost went into coronary arrest when the young lady told me the bill for this electrical work was $887.00!!! And, that it included the payment for OVERTIME for the electrician!!!
I said, NO! the overtime was Squire's fault for not showing up on Friday when they were scheduled and for trying to schedule the electrician for Monday when I had CLEARLY AND REPEATEDLY said it had to be done before Monday. The scheduling no-show was THEIR fault. Why should I be penalized?
And, that they were NOT supposed to submit the bill to be paid by my insurance company.
And, that $887.00 was outrageous. $300 over and above an estimate. That's almost $1000.00 to install 2 simple ceiling fans!!
I can expect a few dollars over an estimate, but the electrician did NOT need to drill through the ceiling. He did have to install ONE junction box. We're not talking a major electrical remodeling job here.
The young lady I spoke to was very polite, very professional, and promised to look into the situation. I expect she will. She will get back to me by phone or email.
The electrician was great. Quick, thorough, clean and efficient. If he weren't working for Squires, I'd hire him again.
Would I engage Squires Electric again??? Are you kidding? NO!
NOTE: Every company has situations where no matter what they do, things get messed up and they lose a customer. I hope that my experience with Squires is out of their norm, or at least they take an opportunity to look at some of their procedures and improve their scheduling and fees. They seem to have good employees (well, except Office Man), so hopefully it will be a good company.
I feel like the price was a little high for what they did though.
Excellent.
Jeremy at Squires did the work. He is such a professional. Started early - worked quickly, nice personality.
Jeremy is very organized and always left the job neat. Plus he is an excellent communicator - he asked a lot of questions to make sure that what he was doing would be exactly what I wanted... I felt I was able to provide input on the position of recessed lights, height of chandeliers etc.
The thing I really liked about Jeremy is that you can leave your house knowing that everything will be handled perfectly.
I definitely recommend Squires and would ask for Jeremy!
left the work area clean and neat
very professional in all aspects
His estimate was $150-$200 but the job came up almost twice that amount. He had called an apprentice to help out to stay on time with his schedule so there were 2 people I had to pay for.
He recommended rewiring the garage and I later got an estimate that was exceedingly higher than an electrician I had used before who told me I did not need that much extensive work.
While the work was good, I think their price is higher than other electricians I've used before.
Mark was very friendly and helpful! He called when he was on his way, and let us know that he was running a few minutes late. Not only did he go through all of our inspection items with us one-by-one, but he suggested simple things we could do (on our own) to remedy some of the more basic issues. It definitely didn't feel like he was trying to get the most $$ as possible by upselling. He did the tune-up, and even pointed out a couple electrical things that weren't on the inspection report that we should keep an eye on. We were very happy with the service and the price, and will definitely use Squires Electric again!
All and all, I was supremely satisfied! Everyone I spoke to at their office to set up the appointment was great too! Sheila and Andrew worked with me to find the best time for me and were able to get Dave out to my house very quickly! I would definitely use their services again!
