From the initial meeting to the end of the project, Square Deal provided excellent communication and focused on meeting our needs. They were sensitive to our budget requirements and came up with solutions to achieve our goals while keeping the cost affordable. I especially appreciated the daily schedule they provided so that it was easy to understand the overall scope of the project as well as what to expect each day. Square Deal maintained close contact throughout the remodel and any concerns or questions we had were immediately addressed. All of the work done is of the highest quality and we are very pleased with the results.

They presented an excellent, creative, thoughtful, comprehensive plan. They worked with me to insure I got exactly what I wanted. They solved some very complex plumbing issues very expertly. They had a wonderful designer who made excellent suggestions but also listened closely to our needs and wants. There work was done while we were out of town. They sent pictures to raise questions about issues where there were choices. They responded to my questions and issues quickly. If there was a problem with something I selected they made sure I didn't make a mistake and explained why. There on site manager was excellent. Small issues near the end if the project were totally resolved to my complete satisfaction. Price was exactly as they bid and I think it was a fair price. Project done on schedule. We are totally happy.

After interviewing multiple remodeling companies, we decided on Square Deal Remodel because they were able to help us visualize what we wanted. They presented their proposal in a very detailed manner and we were able to realistically manage the costs. Jim Kreipe was excellent at answering all our questions as well as being amazingly patient. We had never attempted a remodel before and had heard a lot of horror stories, none of which were realized in this remodel. The project manage Ed Meinig was fantastic at delivering a schedule and doing everything in his power to keep it on target. Square Deal may not be the cheapest but their quality is really good so their prices are very fair.

The work started on January 5th with the demolition of the kitchen/family room area. They removed cabinets, appliances, carpeting, old wood flooring, light fixtures and a ceiling fan.The people that work for Square Deal are excellent and very hard working. Their subs have worked with them for years. Square Deal installed a temporary door in the passageway between the family/kitchen area and the living/dining room area. This helped to keep the dust down considerably in the rest of the house. They helped me set up a temporary kitchen in the laundry room as well as in the dining room with the loan of a small refrigerator and two hot plates. I did not have a huge dumpster in front of my house as they were able to remove debris almost daily as it was being created. The work space was kept broom clean and areas of the house where workmen had access also had protective floor coverings.

There were things that cropped up during the remodel that were unforeseen and required a change order. In the end we had six change orders. These included replacing more windows, additional lighting, additional wood flooring but these were handled professionally and we felt that the added costs were reasonable and were our choice.

We are delighted with the final result.Jim Kreipe is a man of integrity. He communicates well with email and I had no trouble contacting any of them by phone if needed. We have plans to remodel our bathrooms next and would go to Square Deal again.

"Working for [member name removed] was a pleasure from the beginning of the design process and on through the construction. Even the best construction timeline and process can be a challenging experience for any homeowner - [member name removed] were very understanding and patient. The kitchen and surrounding space turned out beautifully and their living experience within the home was dramatically improved - well worth the effort and cost. It was fun to discover inventive solutions to their specific design needs and a wonderful opportunity to serve them!"

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. It was great! They were friendly and it seems to be that it was done pretty close after we told them. They were prompt in responding.

Jim and his crew were excellent and professional. They could be relied upon to provide good service and to be very respectful of one's home. I was impressed with how they protected the house from dust and damage while working there and particularly impressed with the daily clean up. Jim provided excellent assistance with design ideas and with the selection of materials to be used ( tile, lighting, faudets etc). He maintianed excellent contact with me throughout the process and visited the work site regularly. The quality of the finished work was excellent and I continue to be delighted with my bathroom. Work was completed promptly and as per scheduled deadline. The consturction team turned up when they said they would and worked straight through until the job was completed. I was at work during the process and felt comfortable with them in my home. Square Deal is an award winning company that delivers. They have operated in Portland for at least 20 years.

The design phase is an iterative process. Measurements are taken, an intake of requirements and and quot;nice to havesand quot; are acquired, then preliminary plans are made. The plans then are revised and then the subcontractors come out to see the site to make bids. At the end of the process pdf s of 2-D and 3-D plans are provided with a budget.

Staff is friendly and professional and on task. Recommended.

The first part was the design which was charged as a separate service if we declined to proceed with the remodel. We liked the design with a few changes and proceeded with the job. Next came a very detailed estimate of all the things that needed to be done, and the total cost, which we thought was reasonable. There were many, many decisions that had to be made and we were shepherded through them every step of the way. Things such as cabinets, counter tops, sinks, light fixtures, door handles, appliances, flooring, and paint and tile colors. Jim, the boss, suggested several of the designs which we were free to accept or suggest our own. Jim also could steer us away from things that do not work well, in his experience. There were inspection visits by Jim, once a week. All of the Square Deal employees and the subcontractors were good or excellent and the work flowed smoothly throughout the project. It was finished on budget and on schedule. We are very pleased with our new kitchen and enjoy it daily!

They did an excellent job. The workers were very knowledgeable and courteous. They were on time. They cleaned the place after work. They would come back and immediately clean up anything that was questioned or missed out. I would definitely recommend them. We had a lot of bids and their price was among the best. Though it was a little bit expensive, it was extremely worth the money.

This was our first experience remodeling and we had a truly fantastic experience. Jim and Dan were a pleasure to work with. They were honest about the project from start to finish and extremely helpful in making it a success. The project followed their time schedule almost exactly and, aside from add-on costs we requested, was on budget. They even sped up the process with our baby's due date in mind. They worked with us closely during the entire process and addressed all our minor concerns immediately and corrected them to our full satisfaction. They did meticulous work and we couldn't be happier with our new upstairs space. We would strongly recommend them for general contracting work.

Overall, it went OK. We started off great, the demolition went smoothly and they tarped and sealed the work area very well - this was a challenge because we had vaulted ceilings and wanted to contain the dust as much as possible. Our problems started after the install of the concrete counter top, the sub-contractors left an uneven surface and communication broke down between them and Square Deal. It was traumatic getting them to talk to each other and get things repaired to our satisfaction. To add to it all, we got setback a little time-wise because of redoing the counter top, but Square Deal could not handle even a little slip up. It looked like they completely lost interest with us and just moved on to other things. We just got the last bit finished last week (3rd week of Sep '07) when we started the project on Apr 3 '07 and were slated to be done in the second week of June. Their attention to detail was a bit lacking too, we are still fixing up things left out by them.

We contacted 6-8 remodeling firms who were listed on either Angie's List or on the Oregon Remodeler's Association web site. 2 of the firms were well recognized in the Portland area but we found that both displayed a high level of arrogance and did more talking than listening or focusing on our needs or budget constraints. Scott at MPR, suggested that he had to "interview" us to see if we were the right fit for his firm, which fueled our feelings of arrogance on his part. Based upon poor first impressions by the 2 notable firms, we decided to look for someone else. After making the first contact with SDR, they immediately returned my call and we set up an inital appointment. Several other firms never called back after repeated attempts, which didn't bode well for making good initial impressions. Square Deal Remodeling was professional, experienced, on-budget, respectful, did what the said they would and completed high quality work.

The project went very smoothly. We planned the remodel to take place over the summer so we could use our grille for cooking. They prepared the area very well to protect the existing wood floors. Dust barriers were put up and maintained to limit the mess. They stayed on schedule. The entire project took approximately 3 months. They were very responsive to some minor changes we made along the way. The project was planned in a logical manner so that the impact on our ability to live in the house was minimized. After the project was finished, Jim and Karen gave us time to live in the space and come up with a punch list of small correction and problems. They were very responsive to our requests and all issues were resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner. The cabinetry is beautiful and very functional. During the process, creative solutions were found to accommodate our requests. Their price was not inexpensive but reasonable given the quality of the work.

Square Deal Remodeling was helpful, professional, thorough, honest, consistent and timely throughout the 4 month process. All subs were craftsmen in their respective areas. The Square Deal staff was always available, patient and knowledgeable. We feel we got a good value for our dollar, as the bathrooms continue to delight us a year after their completion. We will definitely use Square Deal and Jim Kreipe for our next project. Designer Karen Sedwick's input enhanced our bathroom's appearance significantly.
