A previous contractor had rebuilt a deck on the rear of my house for the former owner on a ledger beam that had significant dry rot and was the entrance point for carpenter ants into a 1940's vintage house with original cedar siding on all surfaces. I initially contacted another decking company (Angie's list awards) and they said the job was too small for them as I guessed from looking at their previous jobs. They referred me to Doug Johnston at Schommer & Sons. My interactions with Doug and his staff were excellent. Doug was punctual for all of our appointments and took the time to clearly describe all the steps of the work to come. Within a week, he had one of his staff out (Jan) who set up temporary bracing and then removed the rotted ledger beam with new treated stock and added the three separate layers of flashing to avoid any moisture coming in contact with the aged cedar siding. Jan worked for just over three days on the job and gave me updates daily. Some of the old cedar siding that the deck directly abutted could not be salvaged, so Jan replaced it with new siding. I am very pleased with the outcome of the work and it was within the budget that we had originally discussed. Doug was very up front about his 15% charge for contractor overhead on the job. This is built into the prices that some contractors will give you but I appreciated his direct approach and I understood that there was more to the company and its central office than paying for the materials and labor. I was so pleased with my experience that we discussed a much larger project for the near future. I would recommend Schommer & Sons to any of my friends without reservation.

We were very much satisfied. Above & beyond the call of duty. They did work I didn't ask for that needed to be done and didn't charge for it. They were on-time and on-budget, and I even got a refund when they finished under-budget.
