Rick's Custom Fencing and Decking - Gresham

I had ricks fencing put up a good neighbor fence. I asked if it was going to be Western Red Cedar, they said yes. It wasn't. They brought boards in the worst shape. I found boards that were crooked , cracked with holes and missing edging. I was told the metal wouldn't show,, the Silver metal shows. They forgot the steps and had to come back. They also built a porch and porch cover. I felt like I got a fast Cookie. Cutter version, which was not what I had anticipated. Some of the materials used were old, grey and weathered. I had an inspector come out he said the roof 'BARELY' passed for the shingle roof to be used. The Manager was ' " LIVID" that I would question the work done by Ricks fencing. I am continuing my projects and landscaping. I have and area I needed more fencing but I wasn't going back to 'Ricks Fencing' again, EVER! I found an EXCELLENT Contractor, ' BUENA VISTA Hardscaping'. They used quality Western Red Cedar and the Quality of the wood and the labor is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the difference in the quality of wood and workmanship is noticeable. (Live and learn) When Ricks was a small company years back, they were artistic and did quality work. Now? Don't go by what they 'Use to be'. They do not do quality work anymore , nor do they seem to take pride in their work. When they showed up in the morning, These guys didn't even know what it was that I wanted. They also didn't want me in my back yard. Hmmm... They used some grey weathered wood and I had them come back out and sand it. Then they forgot to build the steps. Then... on and on. It just wasn't worth dealing with them. 'Matthew Talbot'. was the only decent person I worked with that didn't have a ' BULLY mentality', unfortunately, he doesn't call the shots. Although the Manager could learn some lessons from him in Communication. Always be alarmed when people get huffy if you question their work. FORTUNATELY- I found an excellent Company. 'BUENA VISTA HARDSCAPE' - EXCELLENT, CREATIVE, Communicative Company with INTEGRITY.. They take pride in their work. No ego trip, and they have no problems being questioned. They don't have to worry because they are Quality Professionals. Hands down 'BUENA VISTA HARDSCAPING '. Is the BEST CHOICE FOR LANDSCAPING and FENCING projects.

Work was performed by Marshall B. and Bo J. They and Bruce arrived bright and early for a walk-through to make sure we and they understood exactly what was to be done and how long it would take. They were very personable, hardworking, efficient and professional. They were eager to please and courteously responsive to a couple of extra requests we made during the construction. They did a beautiful job and we are generally quite pleased with the final product although there are some issues with the gate (nothing to do with quality of workmanship) that we would like to discuss with Bruce. We enjoyed our interactions with the crew. We are 40 year customers of Ricks and have always found their employees to be knowledgeable and easy to work with.

Kris, Tyler and Tyler installed our new fence today. To say they did a great job in an understatement. Mark P. came out ad gave us the estimate, and while they were not the lowest bid, they were the easiest to work with. They listened to our vision, and put that into action. The Installers, Kris and the two Tylers, were courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. They were able to complete the job in a day, and cleaned up after they were don, leaving us nothing to do but enjoy our new fence. I would highly recommend Rick's and will use them again if the need arises.

Better than expected. They got here at the scheduled time, got to work promptly and professionally. Price was as quoted. Levi & Ahmad were very courteous and friendly. They explained what they intended to do and performed the work admirably! I tried to hire the work locally (Hood River) but no one seemed to want to be bothered so I call a couple places in Portland and Rick's got back to me and scheduled and estimated over the phone, 4 days later and the work is done! Great job!!

Good job, done well and promptly. Tony and Aaron did great work.

From quote to finish, Rick's was highly professional.  Friendly and very helpful.  Great financing - 15 months 0 interest.  The team I had, Frankly and Jason, were terrific.  They made sure everything was done the way I wanted and asked questions before moving forward.  Efficient, professional and friendly - they were a dream to work with.  Love the fence.  Finished in one day.

This is a review written for my single mom who is 67 years old. Before she signed on the dotted line for the projects Ricks (especially Dan) was the friendliest, most accessible sales man...lol.... Once she booked the jobs the tables turned. My sweet mother has attempted to reach Dan via phone and e mail with occasional responses and short inconsiderate answers. Over 899$ was added to the cost of the project without ever discussing it with my mom. Something like "we just want to be sure you are in the loop on everything, any cost changes ect..." but instead she gets voice mails describing that SHE did the math wrong. Absolutely appauling- they are senior citizen preditors!!!! She is still working a full time job as an administrative assistant - Dan knows this- so instead of calling her work number to speak to her regarding her questions he calls her home number so he can leave a voice message- COWARD!!! The job was spread out over 4 days because the workers only do 1/2 days and then go to another project. They were nice guys and they did a so so job - but did leave it messy with wood shavings and nails in the grass....this was very disappointing. Would not suggest Ricks Decking to anyone!!!! Horrible customer support and service one the job is booked.

Some good some bad

The crew showed up right on time and finished the project in the time estimated.  Rick's is a fabulous company I have used in the past as well.  They are very professional and perform at the highest standards.  There were a couple of minor issues and they were taken care of immediately.  I highly recommend them to anyone wanting a new fence or deck.

The crew arrived on time and were knowledgeable, helpful and courteous.  I would have rated them higher but was surprised that the removal of the tree stumps wasn't included in the quote.  To be fair, removal was not a line item in the quote.  "Treatment" was used and I didn't understand there would be a substantial, additional charge to have the stumps ground down.  And, the grinding of the stumps is to happen "sometime in the next 4 - 6 weeks" whenever the crew with the appropriate machinery happens to be near my house again.  Each person I dealt with at the company was extremely pleasant and helpful.  I would have given the experience an A if I had better understood the $2,500 was only to cut down the 4 trees and remove the debris. Yes, I would recommend the company to other people and would just tell them to make sure the quote is explained from step one through the end of the project and what additional work would remain.

They showed up exactly on time, worked hard and completed it sooner than I expected.  It was a custom design and it turned out really great.  I will use Rick's when I replace a fence on the other side of my property.

Jerrod was right on time for the estimate. I was so impressed I signed the contract. We had made arrangements for Thursday and they called and said they could come a day early! Kevin and Jesus showed up right on time. We went through the plans and they started immediately. They were quite organized and had everything they needed on the truck. One post was removed prematurely and compromised the neighbors gate, but just as promised Kevin and Jesus returned the next day to fix the issue. Kevin has a great attitude and excellent customer service. Kevin is an excellent trainer, he instructed me on how to install the white slats that went into the fence.

The best part was the guy that came out and put the fence in, he was just such a hard worker, and professional and a perfectionist.  It looks great.

Got quotes from 3 vendors. Did not go with low bid because the salesman from Rick's had us convinced that their expertise was worth the extra thousand dollars. It was NOT. They were unable to cut boards square, to set screws flush, to set joists level, to have tight railings ...
It was a long list of problems showing lack of attention to detail. Get in, get the job done fast and expensive but not very good. They talk one heck of a good story but when it comes to doing good work, unable or unwilling to perform. VERY VERY disappointed with the work they did for us.  They did come out and tear out a joist that had bowed.  Replaced with another joist.    They did come out and fix the loose railings.  
  I think it best is described by my fiance when she came home after they completed the deck. She walked in the backyard and was very disappointed with how the deck looked.
We will never deal with Ricks and feel they are the very last choice one should make for their fencing or decking needs. In the years since, we have had the "sides" of the decking come loose.  The screws don't hold it.  We also had a house inspector tell us that he thinks they put the flashing in incorrectly to the house.
Last year I called with another complaint about a board coming apart and I figure they were tired of hearing about their crummy workmanship so they ignored me.  That's ok.  I would never use Rick's ever.  Now I just fix the problems as they crop up.  No reason to get upset.  Just be careful when doing business with these guys.

It was fine, not great.  David came out twice to quote me and my neighbor who was going to share the cost of the back fence portion, and overall he was excellent, professional and helpful.  I should note this was the second project Rick's did for me this summer-earlier they had replaced the fence along my driveway with a "friendly-neighbor" fence, which went well and the quality was decent, not great.  For this second project, we chose a different style after discussion with David.  It looks very nice overall, and they arrived as scheduled on Friday, and returned Saturday morning to finish up.  My complaints are that they trashed a couple plants-one more acceptable than the other, as the second plant was along my driveway nowhere near the fence jobs, but was along where I suspect they got out of their truck.  Their cleanup was less than stellar-I found a number of pieces of the old fence around the yard and garden, and for a couple weeks my dog found others, including several with large nails and/or screws sticking out of them.  The gate they replaced also had a couple boards that were curved/warped, or pushed out merely by the design of the metal frame brackets, and I had to get them to try and make that acceptable before they left.  It isn't perfect, but I deemed it acceptable before they left.  The last issue is one that both my neighbors and I found less than ideal.  Rick's doesn't do the sealing of the fences they install, even though they highly recommend it, and provide the stain.  While I suppose it isn't completely unusual to have to locate a painter to finish a carpentry job, it seemed to us that Rick's could do better than just say they don't do the sealing part of the job.  One neighbor and I worked several hours on the one "see through" fence we share, then I did my side of the solid back fence while my neighbor hired someone to do it for his side.  I don't really mind doing some of that type of work, but if you use Rick's for fencing and you want to seal your fence, you'll be on your own.  I really like my fence, but the cleanup, gate, and sealing issues led me to only give them a C for quality.
