Have used Portland Computer in the past and always been happy with results.
I brought the laptop in and explained that before failing completely I was able to run hardware diagnostics from the BIOS and several anti-malware programmes and found no problems. They called be after about three days, told me that the NVIDIA GPU had failed (desoldered due to overheating) and the repair would cost $270. When I told them to go ahead with the repair, they said I could collect it ?now, because we?ve already fixed it.? Not exactly what I expected.
Several other things made me uncomfortable. I had to ask for a receipt that showed that I had actually left my laptop in their shop and none of their paperwork identified the machine by model number or serial number.
The laptop was repaired and, although now seldom used, appears to be running properly.
"GPU assessment is most always the last resort before declaring a motherboard/CPU failure. The only way to determine whether desocketing of the GPU is the issue is to reflow the GPU solder. There is no device or mechanism designed to ascertain if the GPU solder has been compromised - the only way to test this issue is to reflow the GPU. This is why customer was told his system was done so quickly after being asked if he wanted the job done. If the reflow job had failed, our customer would not have been charged anything. In relation to customer's not receiving receipts when dropping off systems, it is our job to address any "comfort" concerns customer's may have. We keep internal paperwork on all jobs we work on, and in eight years of business, have never "lost" or "misplaced" any customer parts. Less than 1% of our customers ask for a detailed receipt when dropping off their systems, but all are provided such if they ask. Customers visit our shop with many different expectations. We encourage everyone to share them with us so we can help obtain the comfort level each customer deserves. Best Regards, Grant C. Lansing CEO, Portland Support Computer Repair 503-206-5499"
"Customer's part delivery was delayed due to severe weather conditions on the East coast. Airports closed for three days. Customers notebook was cleaned while she was present. Nothing was ever placed on top of customers notebook so the scratches (seen when held to light) were not caused by us. Our customers are the reason we are in business. We would never act condescending towards anyone, and are very sorry this customer feels we performed under her expectations."
