Portland Stair Company-Shane and Gage-are TRUE PROFESSIONALS!! Absolutely PHENOMENAL from start to finish. My husband and I met with Shane earlier this year and when we were finally (financially) able, we hired Portland Stair Company to complete the job. Shane communicated well by email and phone, and when we met with him in our home prior to signing the contract, he explained what we should expect, which included everything from the details of the project to their "workshop" set up area and how they would clean up each day prior to the end of work. Our project included removing our outdated 80's stair railing so we could give it back to them, ha ha, and installing modern horizontal railing and adding railing where there was none, making for safer stairs. We were provided a timeline and they exceeded their timeline by completing much sooner. We've had plenty of workers in our home, but these two guys are galaxies way above the rest! We were VERY impressed and pleasantly surprised when they covered and ensured our furniture/items near the staircase was not covered in debris or damaged. This is something you would typically expect but workers we've had before did not and it was a very time-consuming cleanup project for us. We also went with their recommendation for painters (Taylor Painting, Inc), which requires a specialized paint so as to not easily tarnish due to skin oils, etc. Justin from Taylor Painting was also just as AMAZING! Another TRUE PROFESSIONAL and SUPERIOR quality of work, taking special care of our surrounding furniture/items and a perfect cleanup both days. Justin was also personable and didn't make us feel uncomfortable while he worked in our home. All of them are extremely knowledgeable about this precise type of work and their workmanship is SUPERIOR. They were very respectful while working in our home and even ensured our new young kitty did not escape when they had to open the door periodically. In fact, our kitty felt so comfortable he "hung out" with Gage and Justin, fascinated by the work, lol! What initially caught my attention was the tagline for Portland Stair Company: "If you think a professional is expensive, wait till you hire an amateur" -Red Adair, Oil well firefighter We are SO glad we went with a company who specializes in this process instead of just a general contractor or someone who thinks they are the jack of all trades--hence the statement above. Pricing for the stair railing and painting (our project was a total of 5 days) was incredibly reasonable, especially with the rising inflation and high costs of anything these days. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE REPAIRING, REMODELING, INSTALLING OR ADDING STAIR RAILING. A++ The first 3 pics are BEFORE the stair railing remodel and the last 3 pics are AFTER the stair railing remodel.

The design of the stairway is rustic and beautiful and the structure is solid and impressive. Shane and his team kept on schedule, were friendly, and cleaned up. Shane was a big help in developing the stair design and making our dream stairway a reality.

Shane was wonderful! We needed repair to a poorly installed rail/ballusters which were not done per code. Shane was responsive & the workmanship was excellent! There was a delay in starting the project due to poor weather and a several week production time for the newel post but once it was started, it was completely quickly. There is a HUGE contrast between his work and the terrible workmanship/quality of the railing. Wish we had Shane do the job from the beginning. I would not hesitate to have him help us out in the future.

Shane and his crew was incredible throughout the process. Communication was excellent. When I forgot some of the details, Shane reminded me and educated me about items I didn't know about. A wonderful experience. I would recommend them to anybody. First class organization and people.

Shane and his crew did a wonderful job in replacing the original, traditional wood railing in my 80s house with our dream cable railing system. Even before it was finished, it was clear that these were craftsmen who know their business. The only hiccup was a longer-than-expected wait for the iron stanchions to be fabricated, but this was out of Shane's control. He also recommended quality contractors to complete the painting and carpeting, and bailed me out when the mantel shelf I'd ordered online didn't fit my fireplace: his guys built and installed a new mantel on the spot. Great job.

Job well-done from start to finish! Shane was quick to respond via phone and text and kept me updated throughout the process of my stair remodel. This was not an inexpensive project? but I believe his prices match the quality of the work. I also had another quote before moving forward with Shane and they were very similar in price. So, I think their work is on par with the market. Wonderful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Highly recommend Portland Stair Co!

Great experience with Shane.  Open heart surgery prevented getting to the second floor bed room.  Shane moved us to the head of the line and got a rail installed within two days.  Beautiful job and incredibly responsive.

Portland Stair Company removed two sets of original stairs.  The first set has nine stairs from the main level to the second story.  The second set has two stairs from the family room/basement to the main level.  We didn't realize how poorly constructed our stairs were until they were removed.  The original stairs had gaps between the stair and the wall, leaving a place where dirt could accumulate in the carpet, making them impossible to keep clean.  In the first set of stairs, Portland Stair Company rebuilt the stairs so there were no gaps.  Then, they added a red oak tread on each side so no dirt could ever come from underneath the stair.  The middle of each stair has carpet.  The second set of stairs were replaced entirely with red oak.  Now, both set of stairs are easy to keep clean.  Portland Stair Company scheduled the project within a couple of weeks of signing the contract.  The workers arrived on time and provided quality work.  I would highly recommend this company to anyone who needs help with their stairs.  My husband and I are much more confident now climbing stairs that are stable and have a solid handrail to hold on to.

Shane and his team did a terrific job with everything we asked for. They were flexible working with our shifting project timeline and provided a quality finished product that we are very happy with. The work they provided helped us to create a magnificent entrance visual that my wife and I absolutely love. It came out just the way we were hoping for. I would highly recommend Portland Stair Company.

After removing the carpet from our staircase (to reduce dust), we discovered that several of the treads were coming loose from the wall (explaining why they'd felt a little loose and had squeaked).  I found Portland Stair Company on Angie's List and emailed them asking about having them secured.  Shane asked for photos and details of what I wanted (which was just to secure the stairs to make them safe, not to make any aesthetic improvements at this point), and he sent me an estimate on the time and cost of the work without trying to sell me on anything further.  When he arrived (punctually), he secured the stairs with added nails and adhesive in less time than he'd estimated it would take, and charged me significantly less money than he'd initially estimated, too.  The stairs now feel solid and safe, and don't squeak anymore.  Shane worked with great integrity; I intend to call him for any future stair work I need, and would recommend him to anyone else.

The Portland Stair Company changed my colorfully carpeted stairs to beautiful wood stairs, complete with new newel posts, handrail and balusters. They also replaced floor-to-ceiling posts with gorgeous fir posts and added wainscoting to my entire main floor, including along the upper catwalk on both sides. Their woodwork and attention to detail is incredible and they are a joy to work with: professional and kind, with great ideas and recommendations. My project was a bit of a lost cause until Shane came around. I highly recommend Shane and his company!

We had a spiral staircase (original to the circa 1976 house) which not kid friendly. With a precocious 2 year-old and another baby on the way, we wanted something safe, solid, and design appropriate for the contemporary style house.
Structural and electrical changes as well as building the new staircase from scratch, this was not a straight-forward project. Portland Stair Company delivered. Professional and knowledgable, Shane, his crew and the sub-contractors he recommended all did a great job. We highly recommend the Portland Stair Company.

We wanted to replace the carpeting on the stairs with hardwood with a carpet runner. Shane recommended using tread caps and risers instead of full hardwood treads. This saved us money and time and ended up looking great as well. Shane and his nephew Gage arrived as scheduled to start the project and were done by the end of the week. Gage did most of the work and was good about cleaning up at the end of each day. The wood was not finished so it took several more weeks for the painters that Shane recommended to come out. It took a couple of more weeks to have a carpet installer put down the runner. Portland Stair Company's part of the job was started and completed on time and they did excellent work. The only thing that could have been improved was better integration with the painters and a carpet installer so the whole job could be done a bit sooner but I suppose that is what a general contractor is for.

Fantastic! The professionalism of their work was outstanding. They worked very quickly. I trusted him completely because he knows his stuff and was very careful and thorough before taking action. What I really appreciated was Shane's creative input and how enjoyable it was to collaborate with him. He is a great listener and a thoughtful thinker. Once he knew what I wanted, he made it happen almost immediately. Very refreshing!!!

This project went beautifully from start to finish. Shane designed the cable staircase. He and his nephew removed the existing wooden banister that looked like a fence in a cow pasture. Before doing that, he brought in an engineer to do a comprehensive report on safety. Once the structural safety was determined, Shane brought in an excellent company to do the final finish on the stairs and banister. Portland Stair Company is fantastic. Shane managed everything beautifully. During the project, I also asked Shane and Gage to take out a kitchen wall. They were more than happy to do this even though it wasn't planned in the scope of the project. I needed additional work on my house and Shane referred us to excellent people to help me. I recommend Shane without any reservations. You'll be fortunate to work with such a true professional. It's a joy to have guests over and watch there eyes immediately turn to the cable banister and immediately say how much they love it! Sadly we recently had to move and I'm certain that the cable banister was a huge, if not the biggest selling point. Thank you!!!

After giving us a quote on a Saturday, Shane was here the following Thursday fixing the railing.  He was efficient with his time and the final price was just what he quoted.  Since his was the only quote I got, I cannot say if the price was competative, but we thought it was fair for the job done.  My formerly shaky railing is now solid as a rock.  Shane even followed up to make sure we were happy with the job.  Overall a good experience and job well done.

Overall the experience was quite good!  Angies reports do not allow for +'s and -'s.  I would have preferred some.  The work was generally satisfactory, however I felt that some sub-standard materials were used.  This project required numerous visits and a couple of times promptness was an issue, although I would have had no problem with a phone call as an alert.  Shane is qualified to do these projects but might be well served to work more closely with his help, and be more selective in his materials.

Shane showed up on time, did exactly what he said he would do.  He did his work in the garage so as to keep the sawdust out of the house.  He left everything cleaner than it was when he arrived. All of the work was very professionally done.  I would definitely hire him again.

Heritage Stair, being Shane Kenney and nephew Cage, are great at what they do. I have used Heritage for a staircase and a variety of finish carpentry jobs throughout the later portion of a basement remodel. The staircase was originally bid based on replacement treads and risers over existing stringers, but once the stringers were stripped, it was clear (to them) that it would be more work, and a lesser product, then rebuilding from scratch. I felt like I was treated fairly and honestly through the change process and couldn't be happier with the final product. I have continued to find Shane to be a pleasure to work with on the smaller finish jobs, including hanging heavy solid core doors and some semi-complicated box-style trim. All work has been top-notch, and and Shane has been willing to slot small jobs in, even against tight deadlines on my side and the wedding of his daughter on his side. I only dinged them on punctuality, as due to the often-complicated nature of some of the more ornate jobs they do, it is sometimes unexpectedly difficult to leave an active job. Fortunately I work at home, but then Shane knows that. Had he known I was more appointment-constrained, I'm sure he would have been prompt every time. I will definitely use Heritage Stair again in the future.

Shane and his nephew Gage did a great job. After researching different options I heard from a few people that for stair work Shane was the guy to talk to. We were changing three stair runs from carpet to bamboo treads. Shane removed the existing plywood treads and installed new risers and treads. At all three stair runs the finish flooring had been changed and the finished height had changed. Shane adjusted the riser heights to ensure that the riser variation along the runs was minimal and met or exceeded code requirements. Shane also removed an existing perimeter wood floor nosing that was not the same height as some new field tile with a new bamboo nosing. We had also replaced some existing railings with new stainless steel railings. Shane installed some bamboo railing caps on the new metal railings.
