At 120000 miles I decided to see if someone could tell me whether to fix the car or trade in before something significant happened. Peter's was recommended to me by my boss who's used them for their Volvo for over a decade and over 300,000 miles. They were very helpful, even giving me a ride to a place I needed to be during the time the car was being checked.
When I returned the Service Manager was on the phone for an extensive conversation with someone at Volvo. He explained that they would be unable to diagnose the problem without extensive work and i might be better off to trade it in than spend thousands trying to fix it at this point since I've been driving it for seven years and not having to spend much money on maintenance. Also they told me that although I'd been careful to use synthetic oil, there were some brands that worked better for Volvos. Too bad Fisher never bothered to mention that! Needless to say I am not a fan of Fisher's Service department!
Although they spent well over an hour of the technician's time and about 30 minutes by the Service Manager the charge was less than $29! I was amazed at the reasonable charge and very much appreciated their honesty. Although they would have made money by trying to fix the car, they suggested this might not be the best approach for a car this old with this many miles. They also referred me to a source of other Volvo's (not Fisher) if I wanted to buy another one.
If I do get another Volvo, I will certainly have Peter's Auto Works take care of it.
I should add that I have been of customer of Peter's for the past three years and all of the work that they have done on my 1996 Volvo 850R has been excellent. I highly recommend them and will continue to take my car there for repairs and maintenance.

"On June 9, 2010 the customer brought her car in for an oil change and noted the brake light was on. A vehicle inspection revealed that the front brakes were worn to nothing, or 'metal to metal' and that the radiator was leaking. Customer declined the radiator replacement but authorized front brake and rotor replacement. We did the brakes and the subsequent road test revealed a slight pulsation from the rear rotors though the pads themselves were at 50%. Customer returned to have the radiator replaced on 6/18/2010 and requested payments be allowed to satisfy the expense. As a long standing customer, the request was granted though it is not our normal practice. On 7/6/2010 the rear rotors were replaced as the pulsation had worsened and she had noted that the low coolant light was coming on. The coolant reservoir and lower reservoir hose were noted as leaking and were replaced at that time. The car was left overnight at this visit and moving the car the following morning, the technician noted an exhaust manifold leak which was reported and subsequently authorized and repaired. This type of leak is difficult to hear when the engine is warm, as the metal expands when hot and consequently 'seals" the leak temporarily. Conversely when cold the metal contracts thereby making a leak notable. On 7/19/2010, the car returned not running. We checked fault codes and found the car's throttle body had failed. This too was reported, authorized and repaired. Finally, the car returned again, not running on 8/02/2010. Diagnose revealed no fuel pressure and the fuel pump was replaced. At this time, having felt sympathy for the customer's ongoing problems with her car and having worked with her personally for nearly 10 years, I asked management if we could give her a discount due to the inordinate amount of repairs her car required over such a short period of time. They reluctantly agreed, noting though sympathetic, her car's troubles were not in any way the fault of the shop. Furthermore, we granted her payments terms again, out of sympathy and did not receive full payment until 5/11/2011. Details not withstanding, we are simply saddened that her perception is that we did something wrong, when to the contrary, we went above and beyond both personally and professionally."
