I made the trek to Parkrose Hardware with my existing screen. I told them that I needed a replacement of equal dimensions and with matching mounting holes. I chose the frame and screen material to be used. I was given a ticket noting these instructions/selections and was told to leave the original screen as a template. So far, so good.
The first time that I went to pick up the new screen, I arrived to find it made from materials other than specified. I chose not to accept the incorrect product but rather to return another time to get what I ordered.
When I returned the second time, the new screen was taped, face to face, with the old screen and appeared correct. When I took it to the cash register to pay, no one had any idea of the price - it seems that the person who made the screen used incorrect part numbers when writing the ticket. It took the cashier 10-15 minutes of checking books, consulting managers and running to the back room to finally get a total and pay.
When I got home and separated the two screens, I found that the mounting holes had only been partially drilled through the frame. Obviously I needed complete holes to screw the screen into the door. Rather than make yet another trip to Parkrose, I simply took the screen to my local hardware and paid them to complete the drilling.
I called Parkrose to communicate my dissatisfaction. I was told that I needed to speak to a store manager and none were present. I called again the following day and was told the same. I was never contacted by a store manager. In both cases the acting manager to whom I spoke did offer apologies and broached the topic of a partial refund (amount unspecified and dependent on yet another trip into the store with the screen). I explained that my concern was not compensation but a desire to report this so that they could locate the problem and fix it. Neither acting manager seemed to know what to do with this and again referred me to the store manager.
While I appreciate the offer of compensation, I also realize that this is a quick and easy fix to placate a specific customer. It does not demonstrate a commitment to addressing the underlying cause. To do this, someone would have needed to understand the nature of the problem. Seeing that a store manager did not contact me and the acting managers showed no interest in the details of the situation, I have no belief that Parkrose Hardware will actually make any attempt to provide better goods or service in the future. I will not do business with them again.
