We had arranged with your office for four
or six person-hours at the advertised Angie's List "Big Deal" rate. This
was in preparation for a big party which happened last night so we are
only now getting around to our comments. My husband was told that
four hours should be enough for the work described but that if we
decided we needed six, that it could be provided as the same hourly
rate. Your two men, Hans and Dave, came at about 8:30 a.m. At the end
of two hours, little if any work had been done in the front of the house
and he wanted them to finish but they said they had to get to another
job.
I had a list ready, which I read aloud to them. I doubt if they
understood more than a couple of words. As far as we could tell, they
didn't read the list themselves. While they listened attentively to our
instructions and questions about their work procedures, they seemed
unable to vocalize a clear response. One of them didn't recognize the
English word for bathtub. I had to point out the tub.
We wanted a thorough cleaning: kitchen and bathroom walls, outside
of cabinets and refrigerator, woodwork and baseboards all over the
house, and cleaning of furniture. Unfortunately, I had to leave for a
dentist appointment at 9:30 and by the time I returned they had left.
Chuck, My husband, told them they had done a satisfactory job. He soon
changed his mind and regretted his approval after both of us took a
closer look.
Here's what they did: cleaned the outside of the refrigerator,
cleaned the toilet, tub, and sink in the bathroom. Vacuumed the upstairs
bedroom rug and floor and the steps, cleaning the risers as requested.
Made the bed (!) Vacuumed and dusted the music/guest room. Wiped
most of the kitchen cabinet surfaces. One of them took a long time time
cleaning the kitchen stove top, which we did not ask to have done and which took time away from the items on our list.
Here are a few examples of what they didn't do.
The grimy
woodwork around doorknobs remained untouched. The top of the bathroom
cabinets and shower, likewise. They left cobwebs on the bathroom walls,
dirty finger marks on the bathroom cabinets, and dusty walls in many
places. As far as we can see, they never moved furniture. Many
baseboards, the floor in the dining room were dusty and dirty and had
clearly not been touched. They may have briefly dusted the furniture in
the living room, but I later spent a fair amount of time with rags and
lemon oil removing smears from every piece of furniture in living and
dining rooms, and in our music/guest room. The hurried mopping they
did of the kitchen floor left the floor streaked.
To sum up, the word "clean" may be an imprecise term to someone who
barely understands English. Perhaps if these workers had been teamed
with a fluent English speaker communication would have been clearer and
the quality of their work would not have been subject to criticism.
These were personable men and they may have believed they were doing
what they were instructed to do.
By the way, one of them left his coat.
