Mark Wyman Construction, LLC
About us
Mark Wyman Construction is a small-business deck and fence installer that provides artisan craftsmanship at journeyman prices. At 2-5 employees depending upon the season, MWC offers true personalized service. The owner is the sales contact as well as the installer, and we work with our clients every step of the way to ensure that design and function meet their needs. In 2009, MWC had the honor of taking over the installation business wing of Custom Cedar Products of Portland. At that time, MWC inherited a 35-yearlong client base, having earned the owner's trust, an owner who has worked with hundreds of contractors over the years and chose us. MWC uses only Custom Cedar Products' materials, the results of which may be viewed at www.flickr.com/photos/wymanconstruction.

"Thank you [Member Name Removed], It was a pleasure working for you. Cheers!"
"Hi [Member Name Removed]! Thank you so much for the kind review, and after so much time too. It's great to know everything's still holding up and looking good. Cheers, Mark"
Mark emailed the bid/estimate to me the evening of the same day that we met. Since it's the Summer he was pretty busy and let me know that he wouldn't be able to get to our project until the end of August, approximately 5 weeks after we met. We weren't in a hurry and as long as this project was completed before it started raining again we were happy.
At the beginning of August Mark emailed me and told me that he might be able to get to our project sooner than he thought, which was great. They arrived on Monday August 18th at 9am just like he said they would. The tore down the fence pretty quickly, made virtually no mess and set the posts in concrete to dry overnight. Mark was very communicative and informative through the whole process. On Tuesday they arrived in the morning and spent the day building 47 feet of fence. They completed the fence by 4pm and let me tell you it is GORGEOUS! Makes me wish that I had the money to have all of my fencing torn down and redone by Mark and his crew!
I went out a few time on the first day and second day to check on their progress and chatted with the crew a little bit. They were all so professional and courteous. Super nice guys! The fence just looks solid and beautiful and with a couple of little upgrades in the materials they said they think the fence will last at least 20 years!
I absolutely recommend Mark Wyman Construction for their outstanding professionalism and high quality of work.
"We're so busy right now that I don't feel very prompt sometimes, but it's nice to know you had a good experience. Thank you for the excellent review. Mark"
Mark, with his assistants, Chris and Cory, did the deck job first, with cedar and the proper screws. Rot was found at the ends of the supporting beams, which required new brackets and center supports set in concrete.
The deck rebuild had been started by another carpenter who bowed out when a family member fell very ill and required his full care. Mark Wyman was recommended to take over. The two men conferred with us and each other and the project was completed quickly and most satisfactorily, with daily cleanup and care for the many plants which after trimming back were still close to the deck.
Best of all was the friendly, respectful relationship among all the men.
"It was a pleasure working for you. Thank you for the kind review. Cheers!"
"Thank you!"
Mark is a joy to work with. He is easy to communicate with, very punctual, and pays attention to detail. He uses top quality materials, and was very concerned that the process and end product were what I expected. He stayed on top of the details of the job, and made sure that his expert crew executed the plan impeccably.
I rated the price as "good" because it wasn't cheap. It was, however a very fair price for the quality of materials and craftsmanship, and for the integrity he demonstrated. I got my money's worth for sure.
In summary, I would wholeheartedly recommend Mark Wyman Construction for outdoor construction projects.
Mark was very detailed and wonderful to work with. He showed up when he was supposed to and the work was completed on by the expected time. He communicated very well and made sure that the work was being done to our expectation. We will definitely use him again!
"Thank you, [member name removed]. It was a pleasure working with you, and I appreciate the kind feedback."
Once complete I was asked to take a look to see if everything was how I wanted it to be. The cleanup was fast and complete. Aside from my new fence you could not not see any signs that construction had taken place.
I am so pleased that I have talked to Mark about another project I want to have done in the spring. After seeing the quality and professionalism of this crew, I would have trouble looking elsewhere to have these projects done. I understand why Mark is so busy!
I initially found the company at a cedar products company webpage where they recommended him. Of course, I then checked him out here on Angie's List. Mark came out to put together an estimate for me. He measured carefully and took notes. He discussed the details of the quality of his work (posts are closer together, posts are set deeper and the gate posts are set even deeper, they only use screws and no staples, and their gates are steel-framed). He told me I could upgrade to stainless steel screws for an extra $80 for the entire project ( I did).
He e-mailed me with cost info for both the shared portion and the remainder of my portion. The quotes included prices for different post set-ups (treated posts, juniper posts, c-channel posts, and steel brackets). We e-mailed back and forth quite a lot about the different choices. I was very interested in the juniper posts due to studies that have shown their long life without treatment, but I was concerned about the look and even considered going with a higher grade juniper. He ended up bringing over a post so my neighbor and I could see what they looked like.
His crew of 3 men began on Monday the 21st, which was hot as anything, and they set most of the posts. The next day, two workers came back and they checked with me regarding the slope of the fence by stringing rope so I could see how the fence would fall. They also asked where I wanted the new gate (I already had 2, but wanted a third). There was a little miscommunication with this, but we got it straightened out. This day and the rest of the week it began to rain. The poor guys had to trek through the mucky clay soil in my backyard, practically losing their shoes along the way.
They worked quickly despite the weather and finished by Friday. Mark came over to clean up the job and to ask about any issues. My neighbor and I are both very pleased and I've received several compliments on the fence.
"Thank you for the kind review. You were a pleasure to work with and asked some really great and informed questions. You made it easy. Cheers!"
Mark was responsive, prompt, and hard working. He also re-built a gate that was failing. My mom is older and not very savvy about construction or contractors, and we never had any concern whatsoever that Mark would in any way take advantage of that (unfortunately, elderly single women look like easy targets to an awful lot of people!).
The fence and gate are beautiful and strong, the price was great, and we couldn't be happier.
"Thank you, [Member Name Removed]. It should be noted that your mother was a complete sweetheart and easy to work with. Thank you for the kind review. Cheers, Mark"
crew. I knew they did outstanding fence installation, but they did not have a full resume for exterior painting
or door installation.
The exterior painting bid was similar to others, so I knew they were in line with other painters. They started just before the rains and moved from each job to maximize their man power. They found typical rotted areas and quickly fairly estimated the replacement areas at a very reasonable cost. The overall paint job came out very good.
The second portion of the job entailed building a very nice Catalina Cedar fence with gates and a custom entry way. This is their
speciality and is really nice and high quality. This part of the job ran fast and smooth.
The last portion of the contract was the installation of (19) new pre-hung steel doors for the tenants. Since the building age was early 1970's you never know what was going to happen when they started opening up the doors. They allowed for contingencies and stayed right inside the budget without any surprises. The doors look outstanding.
The entire job took longer than expected, and I personally live out of state, but Mark and Ken kept me in the loop with their progress every week with photos and emails or texts.
I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them.
As an added bonus in this project, I had to also have some siding/dry rot repair done by another contractor. Ken was able to coordinate his work (removal of the old deck and construction of the new deck) with the schedule of the siding contractor. Because of this coordination, Ken had to fit my project into his schedule between other projects.
The end result is a beautiful deck to enjoy the Portland summer on. I would recommend Mark Wyman Construction to anyone.
Thanks Mark.
I would definitely recommend Mark Wyman Construction for any outdoor construction project you may want done.
I did not like the latches he installed on the gates. I asked him to change them and he refused. It was he either did not know how, or did not want to change them. He charged extra $250 for the locking latches installed the locking mechanism on the outside of the fence. All I wanted was for them to be installed correctly with the latches on the inside. One for security reasons, and two because it does not look good. He told me to call a lock smith and pay them to change them. His initiall comment was "if some one wants to get in they will". Really...
To me he should install something that I wanted not what he had.
I looked up the type of locking latches and they are only about $60 each and he charged way over that amount.
The fence looks ok there are some things I did not like and told him about it , he did not change them like I asked.
He gave me a written warantee. Well he hand wrote it on a piece of paper. Not too professional. Hopefully the fence will remain ok so I do not have to try to recoop on that part.
I would not recommend his services there are others that are less costly and would likely do a better job. and istall exacely how the customer wants.
Now I have to hire some one else to replace the locks on the gates. Go figure....
I paid him alot of money for a large job, I just hope it lasts.
Update:
We had several conversations regarding the latches. They are installed well. You were very nice while your workers were doing the job. I was disappointed, indeed.
(The Latch of the gates were placed on the outside of the fence, I do not see anyone's fence in the neighborhood that has the latch on the outside. The locking latchs that was removed from the gates, was on the inside. I did not choose any latches I got what you selected for me. Now, I either have to remove them and have holes in the wood, or put something else on the gates. So that they can not be opened from the outside. That did not seem to be an unreasonable request.)
I still gave you a C rating. There is nothing wrong with that. I am sorry if it hurts your feelings, but I shared my experience.
patient with all my questions. Additionally, he created a very beautiful fence
for a very reasonable price. I’m so happy with the results. I have recommended
him to everyone I know!
To update: we had him come back this year (2013) to put a fence on the other side of our house. He did a fantastic job the second time around as well!!
