Mr. Macnab did excellent work, even going above and beyond the initial order request. Very knowledgeable and professional in his craft. My brother and I are fixing up an old house. Several walls had water damage, old plaster, and holes that needed repair. If my brother or I had a question about a wall that looked like it needed repair, he explained what could or couldn't be done and offered suggestions. He did more work than was originally ordered. My brother and I are very happy with the work Mr. Macnab did. He kept the work area clean and picked up; he was very conscientious of the property. Both my brother and I would hire Mr. Macnab again and we have already recommended him to others.

Mr. Mcnab was available without a long wait. He gave me a fair bid and accurate estimate of the time it would take to do the work. He was always on time, good-natured and most importantly did excellent work. My sad old walls are so utterly smooth now, and I am glad to have plaster in my old house instead of drywall for authenticity's sake. There are few plasterers left in Portland, and I feel lucky that Mr. Mcnab is available and so skilled.

About what we neeeded:
We have a house built in 1915 that is almost all plaster. when we moved in it was covered in wallpaper. after we removed the wallpaper the walls were in terrible shape. i got bids from John and 3 other drywallers. John's bid was reasonable and I wanted to keep with the feel of the house. Plaster is also easier to live through as opposed drywall.
About our experience:
We have used John on many occasions and have been pleased each time. He does an excellent job and made sure to adjust the texture of the wall to exactly what I wanted. Best of all with plaster there is no "dust", unlike the drywalling process - so it wasn't hard to live through the job. He's pleasant, straightforward, and easy to communicate with. On a previous job he skimmed all our bedrooms. We were so pleased with the end result and what a difference it made for our house, that we had to have him back again to finish skimming the rest. He stands behind his work and made sure we were satisfied. We will most definitely be using him again when we finish our basement.

He arrived on time and went right to work. Reviewed the job with me in detail and asked lots of questions. The area had been prepared by me, unprofessional. He further prepped and painted the area with a blue liquid which bonds cement to the wall. Then proceeded to put on several plaster coats to get area flat. Then bullnosed the headway, 2 horizontal levels going down and a perpendicular side wall. Then applied the finish coat which was sanded to blend in with preexisting 1946 era plaster.
Finally, he repaired a 2 ft. sq. ceiling area in the living room, which I had prepped, gratis! This he did beyond the original agreement:)

My house was built in 1926 and is all lathe & plaster; both walls and ceilings. I had two small areas on the dining room ceiling that were starting to peel away. John was the first one that came out and gave me a bid for either doing just the two repairs or skim coating the entire ceiling which also included making any necessary repairs to the other cracks that were running the entire length of the ceiling. This was on Jan. 5th. I liked John right away when I first met him. Very professional yet down to earth at the same time. When John first came out, he indicated he was fairly booked up until sometime in February.
I did get another bid from another company. They were $100.00 cheaper than John although the work they said they would do was the same. I did not want to wait until February to have the work done, so I made the decision to go with the other company. This turned out to be a huge mistake.
After two weeks of pure h*** and a terrible plaster job on my ceiling, I contacted John again. With my tail between my legs, I explained to John what happened and asked (begged!) if he could come fix what this other company had done. John graciously accepted to come out and help me with my situation.
John came and in no time at all, he had my ceiling plastered and looking beautiful! He is very meticulous and extremely skilled. No mess, no fuss, just pure art.
The craft of plastering is a dying art and you will be hard pressed to find a competent person to do plaster correctly. I would recommend to you to hire John if you are in need of this type of work. John is a skilled craftsman who is one of those
rare contractors that you will be blessed to have in your home. KUDOS TO JOHN!!

We had a number of broken and cracked areas in our plaster walls and ceiling. John repaired and replastered and now they are better than new. Excellent workmanship and attention to detail. The best craftsman we ever worked with.

Our house was built in 1907, so over 100 years of settling and cracking. We had a plumbing leak over the dining room so that ceiling had been repaired but never refinished. We contacted several plasterers and John Macnab was the first to respond. We liked him so we went no further. So the 'B' on price is just a guess, not based on other bids. He did most of the work in May and June and the back bedroom in July. There were a lot of cracks and even some holes. The back bedroom was especially bad. Now, everything looks like new. John was very professional and left the work site clean every day. An all around great job.

John came down and gave me a solid estimate, which he stuck to. He suggested tinted plaster, which was exactly what we wanted. He plastered the ceiling (untinted) for that price as well -- which I hadn't expected, but which gave the room a nice finish. The color is slightly mottled, which is exactly the look I wanted, and I'm very happy with both the process and the end product. The room is so much nicer and warmer!
John was professional, punctual, and very clear about every step of the process. He communicates well and is a craftsman. He doesn't have a big ego at all and he's willing to explain things if you don't understand the process. He watched out for our cats and was careful and respectful about being in someone else's home.
It cost us a bit more because he was from out of town and stayed in a motel so he could work longer hours. I'd seen examples of his work online and wanted him to do the job, so that was fine with me.

John was recommended by a neighbor and so we asked him out for an estimate. Since his price was fairly competitive with less period finishing techniques, we decided to hire him. He came out on schedule and spent about 4 days finishing the job. It was beautifully done and I'll definitely hire him again if we need any more plaster work done.

Everything went very well. I had seen his work in a friends' home and knew right away he was the one for our job. Communication went very well. John explained the process well before hand as it went along. He gave suggestions that helped our decisions. Couldn't recommend him more highly.

He was very friendly and prompt. I was doing most of the remodeling myself, and I didn't get everything done that I needed to get done in time, so I had to end up postponing the job. He was totally fine with it. We rescheduled for another time, a few days later. I really appreciated his flexibility. I appreciated his work. He did a good quality job at a reasonable price.
