Janis gave me by far the best bid for the job, around $200. She had creative solutions for how to handle surface preparation. After trial and error, she eventually was able to match paint in a challenging room. This took place over a number of days. She also offered to take care of some odd jobs, which I appreciated at the time. What I did not understand was that, despite her initial bid, she was billing me by the hour. I was shocked to be given a final bill about 4 times higher than the bid that landed her the job in the first place. Though she's nice and resourceful, I am unlikely to hire her in the future. This billing snafu was, in my opinion, quite unprofessional.
Response from Janis Mennona
"One aspect of the work order was to: 'match a background white paint color and touch up the faded areas of both background color and stencil overlay which was a print design'. The stencil color was provided. The background paint color had oxidized over time (approximately 7-9 year old paint). The client was informed that precisely matching paint color that oxidized was difficult to impossible. The client wanted to proceed anyway. Paint chip samples were computer analyzed by a professional paint supplier to closely match paint color. Unfortunately, this process took 4-5 attempts before an acceptable color match was chosen by the client. The client was billed at the agreed upon hourly labor rate. Additionally, the client refused for any furniture be moved within the small crowded room to be painted; this hindered the painting process significantly. A standard 6' ladder was unable to be safely opened, and in some areas, the painter had no alternative to standing on a desk to paint. The client expressed no dissatisfaction with the work, or fees, upon remittance of payment. The original bid was an estimation based upon two days labor. A change order should have been introduced after the first paint sample was rejected by the client."
