The place is quirky, but heck, this is Portland!
Description of Work: Moved from San Francisco to Portland with an antique chandelier. The unit needed to be rewired for a taller ceiling and needed a new plate to cover the electrical box in the ceiling that matched the new decor. The plate and rewiring and new decorative chain fulfilled our expectations and the subsequent handyman they suggested did a great job hanging and wiring the unit up.

I went to Hippo Hardware to get help opening a silver chest for which I had lost the keys. The staff pointed me to the right kind of keys for the type of lock I was trying to open. I was allowed to buy a bunch keys to take home and try to find one that would work. In the end, I didn't find a key that would work, but Hippo bought back all the keys I returned. When no Hippo key worked, they referred me to Atlasta Lock and Safe, who finally got it open and made me two brand new keys. I loved browsing around the store through the old house parts, it is like a museum. I will definitely go back and buy something for our 1920's house. This was a fantastic experience, even though Hippo didn't have a key to work my lock. The staff was supportive and well informed about my dilemma. They made a number of useful suggestions about keys along the way.
Description of Work: I went to Hippo Hardware to get a key to open a 1960's-era silver chest for which I had lost the keys. The staff helped me find the right type of keys for the lock I was trying to open. The staff took my concern about a locked piece of furniture very seriously, and when none of their keys worked, they provided me with a referral to Atlasta Lock and Safe, who finally got it open and made me new keys. I greatly appreciated the education Hippo provided about locks and keys, and their support for my task of finding a key that would open the lock. Ultimately, my only cost was for a key that I broke trying it in my lock. Seemed very fair.

He proved to be helpful and very knowledgeable in plumbing including older plumbing. You could tell he took pride in what he does. This will be the first place we visit when we need future plumbing repairs. The attention to our needs and details was most apparent. Great job!
Description of Work: Claw foot tub and various parts needed for the plumbing and installation. I was extremely impressed with the knowledge displayed by this company. Tyler Curry was prompt and was more less like white knight.

This is a den of new and used;everything! There are light fixtures, antique bathtubs, faucets, signs, knowbs, hinges, you name it, and Hippo has it, can tell you where to get it, how to make it, or why it can't be found. The warm, friendly and a little quirky owner is always helpful and caring. Here's a plus:Hippo provides full health coverage for all their employees. Not surprisingly, this is their motto: "If you purchase an item or service from us and it is not right for some reason or other, bring it back and we will refund your money." What more can I say?
Description of Work: Special ordered bath supplies for our turn of the century house. Outfitted us with period appropriate cabinet pulls, lighting fixtures and also some lighting repair.
