Response from HIGHFILL CONSTRUCTION INC
"Hi Thank you for the review. We have two companies on Angie's List, Highfill Construction which provides all sorts of home repair and SOS Plumbing which is the branch that helped you with your toilet replacement. We try to provide the best service, due to the nature of emergency plumbing it can be a challenge to arrive at exactly the preferred time. We don't like to put customers in the situation where they have to wait so our practice is to schedule a time and suggest that you go about your daily business until we call with an exact arrival time, usually within the hour. This works for most people."

An assistant, Jeffrey, was assigned to the job. He did a nice job removing baseboards and installing new doors. However, he didn't work full days, and didn't completely finish most of the projects he started or do everything listed. One door he trimmed still hits the floor when it opens, and the patch looks amateurish. Some of the sheetrock damage wasn't repaired or repairs weren't textured, so the painters had to take care of them. Jeffrey didn't start any of the woodwork, cabinet, or gate repairs, and didn't finish the fencing removal. Although he charged me for a truck and dumping fees, he didn't remove all the fencing debris (left most of the posts and big chunks of concrete for me to deal with. He also took my house key and still has not returned it three weeks after the work was completed. I decided to try another handyman service rather than bringing Highfill back to finish the list.
Response from HIGHFILL CONSTRUCTION INC
"Let me first mention that you are a landlord and the property you asked for our help with is rental property that had severe damage and suffered from neglect. You contacted us to purchase 4 hours of carpentry service to remove and reinstall some baseboard from what you said was three rooms on the main floor of the rental. You wanted the trim to be removed and reinstalled after another contractor replaced the flooring. I told you that removing the trim wouldn't take four hours and that we might also have time to re-stain the trim prior to reinstalling. All this occurred over the phone and I didn't visit the property. When we arrived, we found that you had more than three rooms and we took out over 100 pieces of trim. When your flooring people came they found that there was considerable damage under the floor and the re-installation schedule was delayed until they could replace underlayment. You never contacted us to re-install the trim, instead you asked if we could make immediate and extensive repairs to the drywall and help you remove an enormous collection of trash and a fallen down fence. The main concern you expressed was that you wanted to get it rented as soon as possible. You were in a hurry to rent and had a lot of work to get the property for rent. It made me nervous to see you schedule work with other contractors in the wrong order. You had tens of thousands of dollars in repairs to be done and you were scheduling new floors first(?). You asked us to patch walls, which we did, then you asked us to tear apart a water damaged wall (and the ceiling below). The wall was still leaking from above a window. We didn't have your job in our schedule. We came out to do a few hours' worth of drywall repair, and you asked that we also install some doors and remove as much debris as our dump truck would carry. You didn't call us to schedule anymore work. You indicated that all the floors on the second story were going to be replaced as well, and there was a lot more work to do both inside and out. We try to help when we can and understand that you were in a bind, but we have other customers that had established schedules with us. We know that good communications are paramount on a project like yours, however it was your project and your responsibility to keep us in the loop. We did return your key when we received your payment and the written request for the key. We were always available by phone, but you didn't call. I am sorry that it was so difficult for you, and hope that you are done with the work and have rented the place."

when Joe Highfill came in to access the job, he was looking for to create more jobs for himself which I found out letter. I purchased 4 hours handyman work and he told to that it would take 4 hours to change the basement door which I purchased brand new door! Also, I asked him to change the trim of one of the windows which it should not be more than 2 hours to do so. However he ended up billing me for 9 hours for changing bottom trim of the window and he also charged me more than 4 hours to change the door which he mentioned that it takes only 4 hours. He sent me a bill for $780 plus the $275 that I purchased from Angie's List. Be careful when you purchase anything from Highfill Construction or SOS Plumbing. After all I had sent him a check for $500 to close the case which he didn't cash and without trying to solve the issue by communicating he went straight to court to resolve it. I would not recommend to work with him because he is trying to give you a deal from Angie's List and when he is in your house he will create jobs for himself and charging you unfairly!

"The deterioration damage to the windows and doors on your home was due to your long-term neglect of maintenance issues. You had three windows and a door that were rotting and needed difficult repairs because matching replacements are not available. My job is to ensure proper repairs are made. You even asked us to do additional work and we were waiting for payment before proceeding. Our rates are very low and we do quality work. Last year we serviced over 600 customer requests. You're the only one who felt you were treated unfairly. When your house is rotting due to poor maintenance and repairs must be made, we find ourselves in the difficult position of fixing it regardless of your ability to pay. You had a reliable contractor and a warranty on the work. Your decision to avoid paying a modest bill has lost you both."

I called Mr. Highfill in advance of purchase of the deal on Angie's List. I asked him if he could assemble a gazebo in the 8 hours alloted to the deal and emailed him the specs. He told me he could and if they had time left over, they might be able to do some other job. Gazebo was assembled as agreed when I came home from work. TWO WEEKS later, with no notice, I received a bill for an add'l $190 for extra time. He sent a very young man with no experience to start the job; young man reported Mr. Highfill would be there by lunchtime. When I reminded him of our conversation re: time requirements, he said "Pay the bill or I will go to small claims court." I paid it, but would not use him again.

Cabinet removal was fine. Oven hood appears to be slightly crooked. I sent the owner a photo of the oven hood next to a level indicating a slight tilt. He told me my level is worthless and that a quality instrument would indicate the oven hood is indeed level. The owner, Joe Highfill, provided me with a document listing his hourly rates for various types of work, including Carpentry and General Repairs at $56 p/hr. Unfortunately, these rates were not honored. My bill included hourly rates of about $40 per hour for one employee to over $80 an hour for another employee. This worked out to be about $50 more in labor charges. I explained my confusion to Joe and offered him $56 per hour for labor. His reply: We decide our rates. Why would you have that privilege? You don't climb into the attic or perform any of the tasks we do. I don't tell your boss how much to pay you. Wow. I considered filing a complaint with Oregon Construction Contractors Board but in the end decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Overall, the quality of work seems to be fine. And to be fair, I had no problem working with Joe on a previous plumbing job. I think I paid a little too much. And I think Joe could work on his communication--both clarity and style.
Response from HIGHFILL CONSTRUCTION INC
"Hi [Member Name Removed], i appreciate that you're less than satisfied and are remaining to be fair in grading me and our services. You didn't mention that I offered to come over with a better instrument and show you that the hood is level or adjust it at no charge. And I'm still happy to do that. We also spent a considerable amount of time discussing other projects you wanted done and had purchased materials for. I advised you that the Ikea countertops wouldn't work in your situation and other design considerations you need to consider in remodeling your kitchen. These days I find more and more customers are trying to use stock components from places Like Ikea that look great on the wall in the store but are difficult to install and of such poor quality that they're not worth the installation labor. We did get along well otherwise."

I purchased the special deal of 4 man-hours for $275. Joe himself came with one assistant. All work was done superbly. One task (HVAC) for which I said needed X done, Joe examined it and pointed out that actually Y should be done. This was a better solution that took not much more time. All work was done with time to spare. Had they left at that time I would have been just as happy with the work. But Joe said I had more of his timeand pointed out a task that I had not noticed. He then did that task before leaving. Without hesitation I would hire Highfill again.

I was very pleased with the service. Joe came out same day I called for estimate to take a look at the project. He let me know how he would be able to fix it on the spot and soon after gave me the estimate for materials and labor. Within a few days he was able to put me on the schedule and his team got the project done. I will defiantly call them again in the future.

Joseph did a great job helping us fix our kitchen plumbing problems. First, he installed a new kitchen faucet to replace our leaking one. Then, he located and repaired a leak we had from the garbage disposal that had been eluding us for months. Finally, he diagnosed a valve flow problem that we'd noticed but didn't understand what the cause was. So, after Joseph's visit, we are leak-free, we have better water pressure, and no more mess under the sink! He was efficient, professional, and great to work with. We will definitely be using him for future projects, and recommend him to others. Nice job!

I recently bought a house that needed a lot of work. I needed to movein within a month. I hired Highfill Construction Inc. to remodel my kitchen andtwo bathrooms, after I called their sister company SOS Plumbing to repair adrain on my new (existing) home. Mr. Highfill helped me selectbeautiful tiles for my bathrooms, fire place, and the kitchen floor and backsplashes. He came up with a practical design for my kitchen and helped me pick thefloors, counter tops, cabinets, wall colors, lighting, and hardware.I gave him a budget of $25,000. He finished the job on time, and got it donefor $28,000. I am so glad I hired him. He is honest and very knowledgeable, and I felt the work was of the best quality. I would highly recommend him.

I can't speak highly enough of Joe and his crew. When Joe came to assess the project, he determined how much siding would need to be replaced. When my husband told him that we planned to get the house repainted, he gave us some good advice about what to tell the painters. He stressed that we should tell them to use oil-based primer.
He kept us informed about when he would be able to do the job. He and his crew showed up promptly. When they were replacing the siding on the chimney they noticed something amiss inside and improved it.
While he was there, my husband asked him to replace our very sad-looking mailbox. They removed the old post and installed the new one. Joe was going to look at Home Depot for a new mailbox, but we wanted to get a locking box. He said he had one and offered to give it to us. We were looking for something different and ordered one online. It took several weeks to arrive and he didn't seem to be concerned about the delay. He came the same day we called and installed it.
What impressed us the most was Joe's attention to detail. He took the time to get it right and the results showed it.
We also appreciated all the good advice he gave us regarding the upcoming paint job. He was recommended by someone at our local Sherwin Williams store who was impressed by his knowledge and approach to projects. I have recommended him to friends and neighbors and would not hesitate to hire him again.

"Dear Member: I have long held you as a valued customer, so it was with some dismay that I read your negative review of my services on Angie’s List. I take professionalism very seriously, as the other reviews of my services attest to. I have been out to help you on over 10 occasions in the past year alone and almost always on an emergency basis, and so far you have always been well-pleased with my services. You have called on me to water your plants, assemble furniture, repair a faucet and install a shower wand to mention a few of the things I’ve done for you. As I have provided you with these services, you have told me how much you appreciate my willingness to come over immediately because your physical pain often prevents you from doing the smallest tasks. I sympathize with your condition and am pleased I have always been so readily available to assist you. Your last call, which was August 14th not September 5th, as you indicated in your report, was when you tried to install a new printer on your computer. As I went to work, I discovered you had incorrectly wired a number of cables. If you recall, you were experiencing a great deal of pain when I came over on a Sunday to help you out. Understandably, then, you didn’t tell me your DVD drive didn’t work or that whoever had wired the internet connection had done so incorrectly. It took me an hour to correct the situation, and you wrote me a check for $95, the majority of which included time and materials for a previous visit for other services. I understand you expect a printer to be installed in a matter of minutes, and that in the past you’ve enjoyed my policy of billing for the time spent without a minimum fee. If I hadn’t had to figure out the changes you had made to the computer cabling and if I hadn’t had to wait for your slow computer connection to download the printer files needed because your dvd player doesn’t work, that would have been the case at this latest service. I wouldn’t have said anything to you about the issues I had with the installation except that you were complaining about the time it took. When I pointed out that your attempts at installing the printer were the cause for the delay, perhaps you felt responsible or assumed I was somehow faulting you. I was not assigning blame; in fact, I was only explaining the situation. You do need a trusted hand to take care of things until your condition improves. Please give me a call if you need help. I am sure you understand that in this tough economy, a contractor’s reputation is priceless. Prior to your review, my professionalism and valued services have been beyond reproach. I look forward to the opportunity to serve you again as you have always been a valued customer of mine."
