Hawthorne Tile is a custom tile installation company working with natural stone, terracotta, encaustic, glass, ceramic, and porcelain tile on a wide range of projects in the Portland Metro area since 2000. Hawthorne Tile has a number of long-time employees with expertise in the tile setting field - true craftsmen. Our employees are technically trained and CTEF Certified Tile Installers (CTI,) staying up to date on the industry's emerging products and best practices. Hawthorne Tile is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. We are members of the NTCA (National Tile Contractors Association), NWSID (Northwest Society of Interior Designers,) and are the Pacific NW's only NTCA 5-Star Contractor. Reviewed and discussed options for grout color and what needed to be done. Project was started and the existing tile and grout was first steam cleaned. As removal progressed, the specialist said that all the grout didn't need to be removed and the new grout could be "color-matched" in areas where the existing grout was relatively solid and clean. This didn't work, and after drying and awaiting sealing, there were dramatic differences and the old stained grout was still apparent. My spouse and I were both very disappointed for the agreed upon price. I complained to the manager, and he returned and removed all the grout and regrouted the entire shower. It was later sealed, and they reduced the cost by about $50. Now after about 6 months (and with great care in cleaning as specified), the new grout is starting to loosen in a few areas, so I'm somewhat disappointed. I've done a lot of tile work and next time will do the job myself.

Exceptional from the beginning when Jason came to look at the job and to give me an estimate to when David did the job. I'm going to have them come back and do the floor tile next. Cost listed below is an estimate but will be close. It was worth every penny!

We purchased a remodeled house in 2012 and the tile installation that was done in the master shower and fireplace was poor. The materials were very nice, but the tile on the fireplace fell off 2 years later and the shower drainage failed as water was coming up through the tile of the floor. Hawthorne Tile worked with us to come up with a plan for the shower that did not involve tearing the whole thing out, and thus costing over $10,000. They reconstructed the shower floor giving it the appropriate slope, liner, tile installation and drain so that water build up under the tile would not occur again. They also retiled our fireplace, which was decorative tile from floor to ceiling and used the appropriate adhesive so it will withstand heat from the fire and not fail again.

,Both jobs were completed the same day. We met with Fred the week before so that he was ready to complete both jobs efficiently. I was so pleased that they were willing to tackle these and do such a great job. Many of the contractors I contacted would not even talk with me. Thank you hawthorne tile!

Hawthorne Tile was really great to work with. They installed a tile backsplash in our kitchen using some custom tiles that we had made at Pratt and Larson here in Portland. The tiles are tricky to work with, but Hawthorne has a lot of experience with these materials and they work extensively with Pratt and Larson. Shon and the Hawthorne team gave us a very reasonable quote and they did beautiful work. It feels like we have a mini work of art right in our kitchen, and it has definitely brought some additional beauty into our everyday life. Thanks again, Hawthorne team!

After another contractor had botched a tiling job in our home, Hawthorne Tile
rescued us. They did a superb job installing small tiles on a large
curved shower wall, and fixed a shower pan that had been installed

I called Dirk and explained that we were on a short timeline to get the job done. We had scheduled to have a gas insert installed in two weeks. He said he could do it and his crew did. Dirk was extremely accommodating to our schedule. He and his crew were very professional, clean and did a perfect job cutting and designing the surround. We are very happy. Bottom line- you get what you pay for.

many months into our renovation...and couldn't wait for it to be over.

As usual, Dirk and crew did an awesome job. This job was pretty easy however - remove some rust which is seeping out of our slate tile, caulk the slate to ceiling connections, and seal the slate with Dupont Impregnator Pro (one of the best products). This is one of the (sadly, RARE) contractors you can trust. I've hired about 60 contractors in the last 3 years -- talked to about 200...This company -- Hawthorne Tile -- represents the best of the best. They do good work (we especially like Jason and Dirk), they stand behind their product, and they are true artisans...We should post some of the photos of our slate shower one of these days -- suffice to say -- it looks fantastic. I remember the day when Jason showed us his work and was so proud of the way the 3.5" tiles were organized so that you only saw halves or wholes in all directions...A true artist. HIGHLY recommended...and, as you may notice from our review score distribution, we are picky...we do not provide glowing reviews like this very often...

They were really nice. They did a wonderful job. The people who did the work were really nice. They cleaned up. They were really good. I had a lot of work done. Their price was high. They were not cheap but the quality was good. You get what you pay for. I would use them in the future.

FABULOUS....can't recommend them highly enough. After I decided on the tile I wanted we found out that the floor tile would not be available to keep my schedule on time. I called Dirk and asked his advice on a couple of choices....he suggested the larger tile for the floor to contrast with the walls and it looks wonderful. We hit a couple other snags with changes that occurred in the design of the bathroom (the hazards of working on a 100 year old house and the unexpected things you find) and through it all Dirk and his team worked with me and the other subs to come up with other options to resolve the issues, i.e. window trim placement changes, door swing changed, etc. that impacted the tile layout. I found Dirk and his team to be highly professional, terrific craftsman and wonderful to work with. I would definitely use them again without any reservations.

Tear out of old tile had been done by another contractor and cement board had been installed, but poorly. Dirk and his crew salvaged the poor prep job by floating the tub walls flat. We had them install very affordable white subway tile with a limited amount of color accent tile in the tub area, behind the toilet and behind the sink. The main work took place over several days--prep one day, tile install over 2 days, sealing of the grout on another day. They came back for a final visit to install our towel bars, as it required drilling into the tile. They showed up exactly on time with every visit, and the men who did the work were very skilled and professional, and we trusted them completely to work in our house while we were away. The job was billed per the estimate, with no surprises. The results were perfect, in our opinion, or as perfect as they could be in an old house where nothing was square, level, or plumb to begin with. We would recommend Hawthorne Tile to anybody, and if we ever add a second bath, they will be who we call for tiling.

Angie's really needs more categories for this...natural stone...granite, etc...they do it all...I'm going to be brief. Hawthorne Tile is the best of the best in Portland...they concentrate on high-end jobs and allocate the necessary time to complete them. They make things right when they are wrong - we discovered some rust from wet tiles in our slate shower floor and they tore them out and replaced them at no charge (tiles were sourced from Intrepid). Dirk is a stand-up guy. This is not the first job we've had and all jobs have been exceptional. Impressive operation - highly recommended. Professional. Top notch work. Have them give you a bid...
