Awful, took 5 months, over charged, very poor customer service.

Awful awful awful experience. Took my VW syncro van to them last year when the transmission went out. First they attributed the problem to the wrong type of oil and not enough oil - one problem - it was them that changed the oil less than 6 months previously. They backed down and said they were mistaken when I showed them the receipt (I should of course have walked at this point). Initially they estimated one month for the repair, I finally got the van back over 4 months later. The owner was extremely rude on the phone when I asked (for the umpteenth time but politely) when it might be ready. They returned it to me full of holes in the headliner where a mouse had evidently got in while in their "care". Also, the clutch was almost inoperable, they said it was due to a problem with the clutch pedal but It turned out to be the clutch master cylinder which they could (should) have replaced for an extra 20 minutes and $100 while re-installing the transmission. Eighteen months later I found that the front transmission bolts had not been tightened properly resulting in further damage. And the cost, astronomical.

It went very well. I was advised of a leaking shock and how much wear is left on my brakes.

They are just a fantastic classic Volkswagen repair team. They are wonderful people. They repair what they said. They do it at a fair price. They don't try to rip you off. It's just a really great company. They know their stuff. They know classic Volkswagen. They'll give you honest opinion on what you should do and what you shouldn't worry about doing. They won't try to check on a whole bunch of stuff to just pump up the bill. They're very good.

It was some sort or sensor problem. my regular mechanic could not run it down so I brought it here. They are the place to go when it comes to VW but they don't come cheap.

It went very well. I was quoted more than double from my usual shop so a friend recommended Halsey. They are a very busy shop and I was surprised with their punctuality and attention to detail on my older Audi. Great place. Location is nearby max stop so easy to drop off and pick up. My car is running like a champ.

I took my 1973 Super Beetle, which hadn't been on the road in a couple
of years, to Halsey Automotive because they were recommended by an
acquaintance who is well versed in the automotive world. In short order they ran some diagnostics, gave it a good looking-over, and made recommendations for what it would need to be back on the road safely. It only took
them a couple of days to complete all the work and the price they quoted
(which was the price I paid in the end, no surprises) was very fair and in the range that
was expecting.
Everyone I encountered, both in person and on the phone, was very friendly and accommodating
and made me feel like they appreciated my business.
I'm happy to say that my Beetle is running great and I will continue to use Halsey Automotive for
any and all service it may need.

After many months of my Vanagon not running right (black smoke, no power,
irregular idle...) I found that the problem was due to one defective valve lifter. An
auto parts store quoted $50 for one lifter, and it had to be ordered. Tom had a used
one in his parts collection that he sold me for $5. I put it in, and the car is back to
running smoothly again. Tom is also very knowledge about Vanagons, and was helpful
with my service and maintenance questions. Halsey Import Parts (located next door)
is also a great place for quality, low cost import parts.

I like everything about them. They are very nice, very honest and prompt. They go out of their way to help. They are the only people that I've let touch my van for the last 15 years. They are great.

I am now filling legal action against Halsey I Paid $1400 for transmission work that never worked right, I took the car back 3 -4 times while still under warranty and they did not correct it - then suddenly when the warranty was expired - I was told I would have to pay more for them to work on it again. For some reason they could not work on it and fix it correctly while it was under warranty. The transmission completely stopped working and they refuse to fix it. After taking the car to A&P service center - with out me mentioning who had worked on it - I was told the transmission needed a complete rebuild and would not cost near $1400 And he also mentioned whom ever worked on it did not know what they were doing. I am now filling legal action against Halsey

I bought a used VW Jetta wagon for my daughter to drive. While it was in great shape, this is our first VW and I was a bit concerned about service having read some scary things on line. I found Halsey Automotive on this site and decided to try them out for the first major service (and also to do a complete inspection to make sure I hadn't missed anything when I purchased it). The first impression was great--friendly and accomodating on the phone. They did a great job communicating throughout the process. They completed the 80k service on time and it actually cost less than the estimate, including fixing a couple things they found during the inspection. These guys are definitely VW experts and professionals. I'll be making the drive across town to use them for all the service on this vehicle going forward.

Halsey maintained my aging VW Passat for 4 years, and all the repairs over that time were done well, for a reasonable price. Tom was very honest and sensitive to costs, advising cheaper repairs and even passing up repairs that I was willing to pay for, but that didn't make sense given the age of the car. On one occasion where I was stuck over a weekend, one of his guys even offered to meet me at the garage to help me out. If you're looking for a very competent VW mechanic who takes your needs into consideration, Halsey cannot be beat.

My poor old '66 VW Beetle had been sitting in my garage for years with many issues. Eventually I'm going to restore it but money and time just hasn't allowed that. I had let so much time pass that it really needed to have the engine/carb worked on so I could get it to my new house. When I got it in for the work, Halsey informed me about some other issues that I hadn't realized needed attention like the axle issues and many others. I've owned this car since High School and really beat the heck out of it. Halsey helped me out in a pinch and got it going to the point that I could get it to my new house and keep it running. They were very informative about where I could cut corners, where I could put things off and what needed to be done to be safe. Now if I can just get around to doing the restoration. I went to Halsey because my former roommate had a VW bus with consistent automatic transmission problems and money issues. They have consistently helped him out fairly and as well as possible for a transmission long past it's usefulness. These guys are definitely all right in my book.

Halsey Auto is the place in Portland for VW repair. Tom and crew know their stuff. I took it in with a day's notice and was picking up 2 days later (one day to diagnose and one day to get part in). Very pleased with everything from oil changes to replacing CV joints (common on Eurovans). With the invitation of thinking something was wrong with my brakes, Tom took a look and said the front was worn 25% and the rear 50%... saying I should come back in about 5k miles or so. I'm impressed whenever a mechanic gives me an honest report.
