It seemed that Gary wanted to do a good job, and he was easy to work with, so I was patient over the last year in anticipation that we would get the issues worked out.
Imagine my surprise when on Aug 2nd of this year we received a letter from Gary dated Aug. 1st stating that effective July 31st he would no longer be servicing our area. Unknown to my husband or me, we were his only customer in our area and he had decided it was too far to go. When he took the job he anticipated expanding the customer base here and apparently that didn't happen. It was taking him 1/ 2hour each way to service our property and we can certainly understand the negative financial impact of that situation, but the entire year he serviced our property he never said a word about it. My husband and I were very upset that he gave us NO advance notice or any indication that he was even thinking of dropping our area. By the time we received his letter we were only 3 days away from needing service again. Worse than that, the contract that we had signed required us to hive him a 30-day notice. Apparently that only worked one way. I immediately called him with a request for him to return my call hoping that we could work something out. All we needed was some time to find another company. It took 2 calls from me before he called back. He apologized for leaving us stranded, and said that he felt guilty, so he contacted another provider who services our area and had him contact us.
When the other provider came out he said the property was larger than he had expected, and even though we had a full maintenance contract with Gary, there was a lot of deferred maintenance in the flower beds including pruning. He wouldn't even give me an idea of what he would charge to take over the job. I could see that there were numerous weeds in the beds, and that was one of my complaints with Gary. He claimed he was using weed killer, but I never saw a weed that was dying. I spoke with this new provider for about an hour trying to work something out. Finally he agreed to cut and edge the lawn for $50 a visit. It cost us $200 for the month of August and all we got for it was a manicured lawn. The weeds kept growing; nothing was pruned or fertilized or treated in any way. Considering we were paying Gary $225 a month for full maintenance $200 for mow, edge, blow & go seemed very steep. Thanks to Gary we had no choice other than to agree to the price. We have since found another provider from Angie's list who has detailed what would be done and will do it for $245 a month, further reinforcing in my mind that it shouldn't have cost us $200 just to do the lawn. As far as I'm concerned, Gary owes my husband and me an apology, and at the very least he should come back and remove all the weeds he left behind and were allowed to grown in the absence of the full maintenance that he had agreed to provide.
"Well what can I say, We were awarded a 2010 Super Service Award from Angie's list our first year! Although we tried our best to please this customer, some people no matter what you do is not enough. We take our work very seriously and are disappointed when it does not work out with someone but in this case there was always a complaint about something even though the property looked outstanding when we left it. The only complaint we ever had with this customer was weed control in her beds. The property was about a half acre and rarely was there more than a few weeds present. We will continue to provide outstanding landscape service as usual and not let this one report deter us from what we do best."
