Gary came out to my property to take a look at some of the work I wanted done.  Gary is a seasoned certified arborist who really knows his stuff.  I can't quite recall how long he said he'd been doing it, but it was at least 40 years.  His father started the business and he is maintaining the high standards from a generation ago.
Gary walked my property with me where I have many types of fruit trees.  He gave me great advice on caring for them along with a few critiques on some that I had already pruned.  I knew I had one diseased and damaged cherry tree that had to come down.  Gary also identified two smaller maple trees that would eventually have some major problems with splitting (due to previous home homeowners lack of proper tree training / pruning) and potentially falling right on to a major road.  The cost to have them take these down and grind the stumps was minimal ($300) since the equipment to do so would already be on my property for the cherry tree.
I have some large doug firs along my driveway with some low branches that were encroaching on my cedar roof and causing excess moss.  I wanted them trimmed back and raised up a good 15' above the roof.  
Gary provided a hand written and detailed quote.  I thought the price looked fair so I agreed to it.  That was on a Thursday.  Gary and crew arrived the following Monday to perform the work.  It took them two days to do all the work including chipping all the limbs that were taken down.  They raked the entire areas where they were working.  My yard looked cleaner than it did before they arrived.  
I'll definitely have Gary come back out for any more tree work on my property.  If you appreciate an old school business with integrity, you won't be disappointed with Drendel's.  

I have hired Drendles Tree Service to keep our trees trimmed for the last 25 years. They are prompt and their cleanup is immaculate. Hiring the same company for the last 25 years just about says it all.

Even came back out at no charge when we realized more stump grinding would be needed.

I love the guy! I have used them multiple times. He is very responsive. He returns calls immediately and he makes time to come by in off hours that meet my schedule because I doesn't have the normal time like them and so they come by at night and he always does the work he is gonna do and then cleans up really well. I have them out here late summer early fall. I think the approximate cost of the service is $500.

It was really good. He's very clear on what he did, he came out, he was efficient, he was quick and cleaned up is self completely. He left us bare woods for burning all stacked up and put away and he did a really good job; I think it was he and his son.

Removed all the limbs, raked the bedding and air swept off the driveway. was very impressed that the owner came out and gave us a 'quote' and showed to perform the actual work. Very knowledgeable and very good work.

He arrived on time and provided a thorough estimate. However, it was a bit higher than expected, so we decided to postpone the work.

They were very prompt in returnIng my phone inquiry and also when showing up for the work. I trust this company to be professional and fair. I had an excellent experience with them.

It was an absolutely positive experience. I was very impressed. He was honest. The man explained how long he has been in business. He inherited the business from his father. He has a very low arborist number. He has been a certified arborist for a long time. He educated me. He knew that I was going to be getting other bids and he gave me a list of things to look for; mainly it was licensed, bonded and insured and to ask for proof of all of those. It was really cool. He wasn't all encrusted on getting the sale. He looked like the Marlboro man. He was a little bit crusty, cigarette smoking. He was no BS and he had the attitude that if you want the work fine, if not I have other customers that do. I thought the price was very good. The quality was exactly as he promised. He was right on time and everything was perfect. I plan to use him again.

They did extensive trimming on one big tree and pruning/shaping on a smaller tree. They cleaned up all the limbs. Very pleased with the work; will definitely use them again.

So I'll start with the good parts but please read to the end and see why they got such a low score from me. I called Gary to give me a quote after the severe pruning job that was done by Asplundh. Asplundh contracts with PGE to trim trees under utility lines, but they trimmed my trees so severely that I was afraid my trees were beyond repair. Gary came out the same day I called and said the tree did need additional pruning and shaping but it could be done. So good marks for a prompt response and his knowledgeable assessment. They did a great job of pruning the tree and gave it a good shape. They had to clear out limbs that were damaged and broken by Asplundh and other cut limbs that Asplundh had left in the tree. And they cleared out a lot of dead branches and I'm pleased with how the tree looks. So Drendel gets and A for the quality of pruning. I had in the past tried to find someone to trim this tree for me and the two arborists I had contacted were reluctant to take on the job. So when Gary quoted $1100 I said ok and didn't get any more quotes. I figured it was a long and arduous job, based on past comments by other arboriss, and so on the face of it, the quote seemed fair. However, the job only took 3 1/2 hours. This was one man doing the trimming and two unskilled ground helpers and then Gary standing around to supervise. That's over $300 per hour! An average of $75 per person!! Yes, they also have an expensive truck and chipper, but come on! If I had known the job would only take that long I would have never agreed to that price. You readers may say that's my fault for not getting competing quotes, and yes that's true. But still, I have to rate the price a D. And now that I re-visit his Angie's list page, I see he gives a discount to Angie's list members but I guess I had to not only mention I was an Angie's list member but I had to specifically ask for the discount because I did not receive any discount. Gary and his crew seemed like they were being very careful with the extensive shade garden that I have under this tree. They brought in saw horses and plywood and used it to shelter the plants in the area where they were working. Initially, they did a great job of this and the plants under the shelter came out great. Even some tall ferns were not damaged. Gary also did a great job of telling his crew to watch where they were walking. So only a few plants got damaged by stepping on them or from branches coming down. However, and its a big however, the two men with rakes were very over-zealous in the clean up. About 2/3 of the way through the trimming it started to rain so I retreated indoors and I regret that I didn't stay out there to supervise the raking. They raked through delicate oxalis, native bleeding heart, native duck's foot, corydallis, violets and etc. I've uploaded some picture so you can see how the plants were flattened to their sides by the raking, leaves were torn, some plants were completely raked away, broken off at the base, fern fronds were broken, and they raked so hard, some roots were even exposed. When I mentioned this and pointed out the area to Gary, he denied that they raked there and said they hand picked whatever fell in that area. The last picture I uploaded shows and area in my garden that wasn't raked. The raked area wasn't quite that lush, but almost. So I rate the quality of clean up an F. Combined with the A pruning job, I gave them a C overall. And since he denied that they had raked in that area, I give him a D for professionalism.

After explaning my needs Mr. Drendel decided to come to the site to provide an estimate. He was able to stop by same day as my call and quickly looked around and gave an estimate. He and the grinder arrived on time and did a great job working around structures and plantings. They set up a plywood barrier around the grind site so debris wouldn't fly all over the place and damage anything. While the work was being done, Mr. Drendel walked around with me and gave suggestions on other areas of concern, namely shaping a large maple tree. He was very helpful. After all the grinding was completed, they were going to spread the shavings around so I didn't have a huge mound to deal with as I did not want them to dispose of it. I declined the offer but was pleased that the offer was made in the first place. The only critique I had is that one sheet of plywood was left behind but part of that is my fault as I kept forgetting to call and let him know it was here. I was very pleased with the price and the work provided. I'll defiintely be calling Mr. Drendel again when I'm ready to shape my maple tree.

The owner, Gary Drendel, is a very knowledgable certified arborist. When he first came to look at our trees, he spent a great deal of time to tell us exactly what they were going to do and why it was important for the health of the trees. On the day they pruned the trees the work was done exactly the way he had explained. They took great care not to harm any of the surrounding landscape. As an added bonus, Gary also cut any large branches into firewood for our woodstove and hauled it to our woodshed in the back! Before, we had two overgrown birch trees with a house hiding behind them. Now we have a house with two lovely birch trees in front!

He was punctual, professional, and quick. Good clean up. I cannot judge the quality of work as I have no knowledge of what he did. He cut some trees in a way to prevent them from falling on my roof in years to come. He also got rid of part of a rotted tree that would have fallen on my house and in the process, saved the tree.

The owner of the company came out the same day I called to provide a very competitive estimate to remove a long dead tree from my property. He was able to schedule a crew to come out and do the work within seven days. The crew worked fast, stacked the usable wood and removed all the the associated debris. I was very happy with the service and would certainly use this company again.

Gary is a certified arborist with alot of experience and is very knowledgeable. I was very appreciative of the way he maintained the graceful shape of the trees. He came out the same day I called to give a bid and had the work scheduled two days later. He and his two workers arrived on time and got all the work done in an efficient time frame while still taking care to do a careful and meticulous job trimming the trees. I will definitely call again and recommend Drendel's highly!

This company has has done tree work for me before. One could not ask for better service. I could give details, but it is sufficient to say that on the five categories listed above, if it were possible I would give them an A+. I am over 80 years old and have never received better service in any type of work. His work is reminiscent of that done many years ago in a little town in the Midwest. Mr. Drendel and his work are an endangered species. The report from the neighbors- they swept their driveways and the street cleaner than they have ever been.

Excellent work by Gary and his crew. Three tall spires of a cedar tree were thinned to allow air to pass through. Everything was chipped and hauled away, including some shrub debris that was sitting off to the side. The area below the tree was cleaned and raked, and even the driveway was blown clean.

Gary answered the phone on my first call, and scheduled my estimate for the following day. He spent at least 30 minutes talking to me about each of the trees on my new property, explaining what to expect from them and how to keep them healthy. He then scheduled the work for two days later. The work was completed in less than two hours by a team of three arborists supervised by Gary. They did an excellent job! Gary also was kind enough to assess the health of my street trees in writing for the City of Portland, and he gave me advice on when to schedule my next service.

The above story tells it all. Quick and very careful work. Done very quickly and without any problems. Cost was what he said it would be. He needed to use our neighbors drive way to gain access to the tree and was careful to put down some plywood to catch any oil leak from his truck. Except for the stump which he cut off level with the ground, it is hard to tell that he was there at all. The tree just disappeared.

They came exactly when they said they were going to and explained what they were going to do. There were two of them on the ground and two in the trees. They worked all day from 8 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon and trimmed the heck out of the tree so that it didn't fall over. They cleaned up like crazy and they protected the bushes that needed protecting. They hauled away tons of tons of debris, Mr. Drendel (the boss) was out there the whole time watching them, all the workers spoke English and they even put down huge sheets of plywood so that they were walking on the plywood instead of the grass. Everything was cleaned up before they left. I would use them again.

Excellent experience. Gary was very responsive both in terms of providing an estimate and in terms of performing the work. The man has a good eye for shaping trees, and takes care with the work he performs. At one point he was using a small hand pruner to perform detailed pruning on minor branches. He's also a certified arborist, which made me feel more comfortable in terms of hiring someone new. Cleanup was also great! The yard was cleaner after the work than before. Good experience; highly recommended. Will definitely call him again the next time tree work is required.
