Our issues:
Danny:
1) told wife they were out of stain and were not doing anymore work
2) admitted to wife that job quality was less than he expected
3) blamed bare spots of deck on poor wood
4) told me "we did the best we could", even though the deck was not completed- when I phoned him
5) made excuses, but never apologized for bad outcome
We had to purchase 2 gallons of stain, so I could begin work the next evening, covering bare wood and painting all grooves between deck boards. I shared 7-8 pics with Danny of the unstained deck parts. I have spent a couple hours thus far, with more to do.
Danny charged $1,300 and we discounted his payment to $1,000
Here is the long version from start to finish:
I called the company phone number and left a message. Danny, the owner, called me back the same day. He came out within a couple days to see the job. My deck was a mess of old peeling white paint and a new set of stairs added on a couple of years ago. No effort had been made to care for the deck over the years. It was an eyesore. Danny took measurements and gave me an estimate on the back of his business card. He intended to email me with a confirmed estimate later. From these first interactions I found Danny to be easy to talk with, and also very professional and knowledgable. A couple days later Danny emailed me and apologized that he had misplaced the paperwork. He said he would honor the rough estimate he gave me. I have the impression that misplacing paperwork is not common for him. He seems very organized overall. This was probably just a fluke. Danny let me know that I may have to wait several weeks before he could get the job done because other jobs were ahead of me. The time frame for getting outdoor painting done is weather dependent so he didn't give me a firm date, which I understand. He was able to get to my job much sooner than I expected. He emailed me a week ahead with his plans. He said he would clean the deck first and then come again to paint it. In our original agreement, I had planned to clear the deck off for him because it had so much on it and this would cut down on his time and effort and help save me some money. However, when he emailed me I was out of town and would not be back until after his proposed cleaning date. This meant that he had to move the grill and all the patio furniture and the dog shed off the deck, down a full flight of stairs. Extra work. Since, he wanted to move ahead with the job, he did this extra work on with no charge. I was impressed. He sent me another email to make sure that the date and time he planned to come out to paint the deck would work for me. It did. He was on time and well prepared. He came with two employees. They were polite and professional as well. The three of them sanded the deck for a couple of hours. Then painted for the rest of the day. Three men worked for 8+ hours on my two-toned deck (needing to be extra careful not to get the colored paint on the white paint and vice-versa). It took more paint and longer than expected, but Danny stuck with his original quote. Besides being really impressed with his work ethic, I was also pleased with the end result. My deck is still not perfect looking...because covering fundamentally poor woodwork with new paint will not make it look 100%, but I no longer have an eyesore. I am probably the only one now that nit-picks the details of what lays beneath the beautiful new paint job. Before Danny left with his crew, he gave me tips on how to keep it looking nice for as long as possible. I almost can't wait for the paint to look old so I can hire Danny's Green Surface Cleaning again. I have given good ratings on Angie's List before when a company does a good job, but something about this experience really impressed me. Call Danny's Green Surface Cleaning. Let them do the work, and then when you love the outcome, rate them on Angie's list so others will also know to trust this company!
