We just underwent a full exterior renovation on our 1929 home and after soliciting multiple bids, chose Clow Roofing & Siding as they were the most competitive bid, but also because they really understand and explained how the front door/entryway was the key to the project's visual success. I appreciated that perspective.. The project involved a full residing with new smooth Hardiplank, as well as new gutters/downspouts and replacing two original porch columns. The project required removing two layers of old siding (during which we included blown-in insulation). Doug and his stellar crew were very attentive to our goals, took time to work through options, were always willing to adjust small details to our liking, and worked (in my estimation) very quickly. And the finished product is beyond my best hopes...it's perfect. They really are skilled craftsman, and good people. It was a pleasure doing business with them, and we can't recommend them highly enough!

Clow has been fantastic throughout the entire process. We had both our roof replaced by them and then hired them again to do our siding. They were professional, prompt and thorough. They cleaned up the site every day, called when they had questions and help us with decision making. We are so happy with the end results and would be happy to hire them again or recommend them to friends.

It went very well. The company: They were good to work with. The final bill was exactly the estimate I was given, and the time frame I was told for when the job would be done was very close to what actually occurred. They didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. The only issue I noticed is they seem to have a little internal communication problem. The workers showed up on the day specified, but the dumpster had not shown up so they couldn't work. So things got going a day later than planned. No big deal. Then at the end of the job they ran out of ridge shingles because of a slight underestimate of what was needed. They did a temporary patch. Coming back for that last 10 feet of ridge shingles and final cleanup took a few weeks to happen. Again, not a big deal, and I think it was an internal communication issue rather than them ignoring me. This was just at the beginning of the rainy season, and I actually think they were out getting other people's roofs done before winter really set in -- which I think is a good thing. Well, there was one other issue. The salesman told me that there was a lifetime warranty if I ever had a problem with the work, but I noticed after the fact that the contract didn't actually say that. So that leaves me confused, and you should get that clarified in the contract with whoever you hire. But Clow has been around for decades, they seem really honest and good to work with, and I suspect if I did have an issue they would make good on what the salesman had told me. The workers: They did a very good job. They were 4 brothers who were really nice guys, spoke excellent Spanish, and one spoke some English fairly well. The one who speaks English was very interested in improving it, which I appreciated, and I think the other brothers have the same intention. I speak some Spanish and was able to talk to them some. They took very good care of my house, and were not 4 gorillas pounding away or breaking things. They also did a very good job keeping the debris from 3 layers of old shingles from littering my yard and garden. And they did not blare music or make any unnecessary disturbances for my neighbors. Here's what I really appreciated. Because of the 1 day delay caused by the dumpster snafu, they were up against a BIG rain storm coming in. The guys put on the afterburners on the 2nd day and got the job done before the rain hit. So the house was nice and dry as that 3 inches started that night. And the temporary patch worked fine. If you're getting a tear-off, here is a bit of advice for you no matter who you hire. I was warned to take the pictures down in my house because the vibrations could knock them off the wall. Another thing you might want to do is cover things in your garage and attic. I didn't anticipate the debris coming down inside, but come down it did! What a mess. I had been considering cleaning my garage for about 3 years, but this made it necessary immediately.

It was fairly straightforward. They did lose our plans and need to recreate them for the on the ground team, missing a key element in the new plans, but it was easy enough to resolve.

Originally we had asked them to come and clean out the roof and gutters, and replace the flashers but on inspection, we found some roof rot. They found that whoever had installed the roof fifteen years ago had installed the wrong flashers that caused water to flow through a section of the roof causing the rot. We spent a lot more money on the work because of this. The only challenge we had with them is that they lacked in proactive communication with us. They kept putting us off until they could get us into their scheduling. And when they came out, they seemed understaffed.  We would use them again.

Very satisfied with Clow Roofing.  I had purchased a home and during the inspection I was told the flashing / gasket around a vent pipe might be letting in water.  I had called two other roofing contractors, one couldn't make it for 2 weeks, the other kept pushing back when they could come out.  I asked one of my neighbors for a reccomendation, and they suggested Jeff at Clow Roofing.  I called Clow and talked to Jeff.  He made time to come out that day and look at my roof.   He explained the problem and gave me a timeline for getting the repair done.
I told Jeff to go ahead with the repair.
Prior to Jeff starting the work the 2nd contractor called and told me they could come out and give me an estimate.  Usually I never turn down a free estimate, I think it's always good to get the second opinion when you yourself don't know the problem or couldn't fix it on your own.
I declined.  Mainly because Jeff took the time to show me what part needed to be fixed.  We backed up into the street and he explained the gasket and possible causes for its failure.
I didn't feel pressure to accept his recommended fix or that my job was too small.  I felt Jeff cared about my concerns and gave me an honest opinion.
I would suggest Clow to my neighbors and to my family and if I have any future roofing needs I will call them first.

Influenced by radio ads, I called Clow for a bid.  Doug was prompt, very nice, seemed genuine and knowledgeable. He told me what my house needed and why and said he would put his ‘best crew’ on my roof. A month later I called to book the job and they scheduled the work for the following Monday.  When I came home from work that Monday I was caught up in caring for my 2yr old and didn’t have the time or the freedom to do a thorough inspection, but I did raise a few points of concern with the Clow crew of two who were doing the work. They indicated they were unable to help me since they spoke no English. Apparently they also had little regard for the care of my property or for aesthetics.  Upon further inspection, that night, I found items broken or damaged and a less that attractive application of materials on my roof.  I called Doug and he assured me that the project was not done and that my concerns would be addressed before the job was completed. He also said that completion would take a few more days than expected because the foreman/crew manager was sick. Eight days later Clow declared closure on the job. I had to call them back out to complete the project as agreed and to address the damage that they had missed on the final inspection.  They came back out and provided the repairs that I had cited as necessary and I then paid my bill. Weeks later, however, when I finally climbed up on the roof, I discovered my chimney flashing had received an obviously harried, haphazard application of the ugliest paint-job I’ve ever seen. Previously, the clean metal flashing was
fully operational and not unattractive.  Following Clow’s work, the flashing still seems operational but its appearance is
best described as hideous.  Anyone with any experience in roofing and with any pride in workmanship should not have been satisfied with the result I’m left with. The roofers slopped paint on with seemingly no regard for containing its application. (http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae37/tedderrae/ROOF/2013-10-05141408_zps8c83e6fe.jpg) This smearing of black paint all over my chimney brick creates the sloppy and cheap appearance I see from the yard or the street.  It’s not worthy of my house or my neighborhood. Disgusted  by the whole experience, and uneasy about trusting any more work to Clow, I will climb on my roof, myself, to scrape from every side of my chimney the ugly black paint that they’ve smeared on the brick. I guess I’ll then contact a chimney repair person to replace my painted flashing with clean metal flashing, similar to what I had before I was struck by ‘The Clow’.   My feeling… this shoddy paintjob and the other visible issues left by Clow are clear indicators
of the type of work that was done here. I’m certain there are issues that are hidden which will surface later. I will then use Angie’s list to source a competent and conscientious roofing company.
Response from CLOW ROOFING AND SIDING
"Sorry that your experience was not as you expected. We admit that some of the finish detail took a little longer to complete than we had initially forecasted, however illness affected our foreman's ability to retrofit your soffit ventilation in coordination with the roofing. As for the painted chimney flashings, we do this to better blend the chimney to the roof (Brown paint for brown roofs, black paint for black roofs, etc.) Customers usually prefer this extra detail. We would be happy to come out and lightly scrape the brick if you would like. We thank you for the work."

They were very responsive and came right out to look at the site. A bid was on my desk in less than a week. I put them on hold for a little bit for logistical reasons and they were very accommodating. When we pulled the trigger they were out during the next dry spell and the crew walked me though the job. It went as well as you can expect having a crew of 4 with hammers right over your head. We asked if they could use cotton balls on their hammers to quiet them down but we were denied. The only thing they ever said no to.
Anyone that has had a flat roof tear off knows a couple hammers are nothing compared to a tear off. This was heaven in comparison.
Less noise, no dump fees, no bad smell. Sweet.
The finished job looks spectacular and so far dry as a bone inside.  And we now have a reflective surface instead of black, cool!

The poor communication, poor decision-making skills, and lack of honesty pale in comparison to the poor quality of work of this roofing crew and company.  It is unfortunate that Clow was used for this job because I am a friend of the owner's son and  would much rather speak highly of them; however, it will be costly and time-consuming to make all of the necessary repairs following their damage, so it is simply impossible for me to write a good review.
-The crew arrived several days after they indicated they would, unannounced that morning.  Communication was poor throughout the several days they were on site (July 31 - June 10 including 13 hours on one Saturday  June 1st.)
-All of the tongue and groove wood was removed from my eaves without evidence of it all being rotten.
-Tongue and groove was replaced with $9/sheet plywood with random cuts haphazardly placed with daylight and felt coming through in some locations.
-The ceiling of my attic room was stepped through in one location and punched through in another leaving holes roughly 4 and 6 sq ft big - the Crew Lead informed me these fell in on their own, no fault of theirs and that hopefully I would not be charged by the company for the repairs.
-A 7 ft tall ornamental maple was crushed under the tear off debris - it was duct taped back together.
-The knob and tube power was overloaded throwing a breaker, this was not communicated so no one was asked to return home to flip the breaker back on; instead the refrigerator was out for approximately 8 hours.  Following two days of abuse to the electrical system, it was stated that the crew would use a generator from that point forward; they did not keep their word.
-All of the shingles for the entire roof were stacked onto an 8 ft x 8 ft flat dormer causing structural damage and a cave in of the interior further damaging the dry wall in the upstairs attic room.  This has also impacted an electrical line (knob and tube) and the roof above the dormer is now concave and will therefore collect water.
-The exhaust fan venting moisture from the bathroom which formerly vented through the roof was re-routed to vent into the crawl space.
-Gutters were cut and downspouts crumpled.
-The new vents along the roof line were installed crookedly.
-Decorative Craftsman style exterior touches to my home have been damaged and are falling away from the structure.
-When the Foreman inspected the quality of work by the Crew Lead, he observed many items that would require removal and replacement - a representative of Clow informed me that some of the shingles were the wrong color (which was no fault of mine so I would not be required to pay for that.)  However, it was evident that a valley had been placed improperly.  The valley was removed and replaced among other repairs.  Unfortunately, the valleys are still not properly aligned despite removing and replacing one of them.  Luckily, the Foreman did re-route the bathroom exhaust fan to go through the roof while he was assisting in the other repairs.
-There has been no communication from Clow since the remainder of their tools and debris were removed from the site.
At this point, it is time to meet with carpenters, electricians, dry wall finishers, painters, gardeners and more to make attempts at repairing the damages - time and expenses that were not budgeted for this project.  I cannot in good conscience recommend this roofing and siding company - I would have much preferred a better experience, especially from a company with whom I have a personal relationship with a family member and that was recommended by friends who used them in the past.

Long overdue great review here.  I asked for estimate and signed contract in early November.  I know they've roofed other homes in my neighborhood.  I appreciate Doug's honesty in that they were booked at least 6 weeks out,  and good to know they would respond quickly  to any leaks in the meantime.  Several emails back & forth explaining the ventaridge system.  No down payment.  They were patient with me when they tried to schedule the start date and I asked to postpone because the project next door went way over schedule and that huge trailer was still blocking easy access to my home.
Finally scheduled for March.  Roofing delivered one day.  A few days later 2 men started in the afternoon.  Started quite early the next day (asked permission).  And again the next day.  Maybe six hour days but steady hard workers, no long breaks, very nice to my dog.  Took the antique antennae away no charge (I did not request removal at signing).  Made Doug's 3 day estimate.
Doug responded promptly to my request for a follow up, I wasn't certain about what actually had been done next door.  So up the ladder we went to note the flashing and porch work.  Doug also did nice touch-up work on the newly roofed house where the chimney flashing (not repair related) stuck out like a sore thumb with the new dark roof.
Thanks again Clow team.

Ernie Champan came out to give us a bid. He was very friendly but we should have noticed right off the bat (he's about 70 years old) when he didnt get up on our roof that something would be off with the job. He gave us a bid which ended up being about $3000 less than what we ended up having to pay. It was summer so it took them a few months to come out and start the project. During a Sunday dinner party at our house around 6pm an older (dirty) man was found in our driveway throwing down sheets of plywood and dropping of supplies. Not only did we not receive a phone call that he was coming, but it was a Sunday evening while we were entertaining. A week later the roofing supplies were dropped off at our house (not sure why the plywood was put down on our driveway a week earlier on a Sunday) again with no phone call to notify us. Luckily I was home because the truck they were driving was way to big for our driveway and they wanted to cut branches off my trees so they could back the truck in. The next day work started. Huge mess. Came home to find out that since Ernie had not gotten on top of our roof or looked in the crawl space to see what was underneath the shingles that they had to lay all new plywood which added an extra $3000 to the cost. We were not called or notified in anyway. Had I not come home to find them putting it on I would not have know until I got their bill. The job took an extra 3 days to complete. They left roofing nails & shingles all over our driveway. I paid the bill full in cash without much complaint. There was no thanks for the business or apology for the lack of communication or extra cost. Would not use them again. Way too many other roofers out there.

These guys were supposed to call before they showed up but didn't. They put a really smelly coating on my small garage roof while I was out running errands for 3 hours. When I got back myself & my neighbor called the fire department because we were alarmed by the smell and thought someone had a meth lab nearby. A huge waste of taxpayer dollars that could have been avoided had they just let me know they had been here. When I called to complain they just laughed. Unbelievably, I called them again 4 years later to see about getting my gutters cleaned. The guy on the phone was really rude. They had charged about 150 dollars to clean the gutters on my 900 square foot in 2004, but now wanted 400 for it, because "Lady, we won't even come out to your house for less than 400 dollars". Guess the bad economy wasn't hurting these guys. They spend a bunch on TV advertising and then won't even pay enough to have someone polite & knowledgeable answer their phones. Very bad way to run a business. I'd never use them again.

My experience with them is that they tried to railroad a poor roofing job through. I think they were trying to take advantage of me because I am a woman and they didn't think I knew anything. They left my yard full of debris. They added a trim board where flashing should have been. They painted it an awful color. It didn't go with the character of my vintage house. I had a difficult time getting them to make changes. I collected two big bags of chunky contractor debris afterward.

When they finally showed up the job went well and it looks like a good job. But it took them more than 6 months to do it after I signed the contract. I realize that it was a rainy year but we never got a follow up phone call or an estimate on when it could be done. I believe if I did not call them they would of never showed up.
