Great. It's the second time we hired them. The first was 5 years ago for major electrical work (new panel, new 200 AMP, wired new AC, outdoor outlets, etc) . This time was a lot of smaller projects such as adding can lights to rooms, adding and moving light fixtures, installing three-way and dimming switches. Steve Callahan is fast to respond and very professional. His crew that worked on our house was very polite and respectful. I loved that they recommended better ways to do things that I hadn't thought of. I really like what they did. I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone looking to hire an electrician.

Steve showed up to bid right on time. I already had 2 bids from well rated Angie's List electricians, one for $2700 and one for $1850. He sent me his bid for $1600 by email the next day. The work was scheduled out about a month, which was fine. When the day arrived, his guys showed up a few minutes early and went to work. The job took about 6 hours. No real surprises, and no additions to the estimate. Steve called in the inspection for the day I asked for. The inspector blessed the job with no issues. I have to do some sheetrock patching, but I knew that in advance and each contractor had warned about that. All things considered I am a satisfied customer and would recommend Callahan Electric.

The serviceman was professional, courteous, and to the point. He didn't believe we needed a breaker panel surge protector, just some 'surge strips' for sensitive electronics. He pointed out those outlets which were grounded and those which were not, and suggested GFCI outlets where none exist near water faucets.

He was prompt with scheduling and the quote. In person and in the quote he outlined a couple different ways to tackle this project and clearly outlined the pros and cons of each. The work was done much quicker than I thought and very well done. I will definitely call back the next time I need electrical work done.

I called to get an estimate on completing several projects in my home - likely a full 8-10 hours of work. After explaining what I needed, he simply said he was going to pass on the project and that he preferred working on newer homes. I was trying to hire a smaller company from my neighborhood, so I'm disappointed it did not work out.

Generally the install was fine, with the exception of live wires being left bare and sticking out of the wall overnight. This is a VERY DANGEROUS situation, and with my pregnant wife in the house, could have been tragic.

Overall, we had a great experience with Callahan. They arrived on time, were extremely efficient, and cleaned up all of their work areas. A few days after they had been at our house, I noticed something wasn't quite right with one of the switches and they were more than happy to send an electrician back out to make an adjustment. I am very pleased with the work they provided and wouldn't hesitate to hire them again in the future.

Callahan Electric performed the service upgrade and move, performed all electrical work for the new construction overseen by W H Wolfe Construction, and performed all finish electrical work. Callahan's crew were very professional and helpful. Pete, the journeyman electrician on the project, was attentive to our our needs and wants. He was helpful in making recommendations for work to be performed and he made sure his apprentices were professional and efficient. After seeing the level of service we received from Callahan Electric, I will make them first on my list for any home electrical needs.
Description of Work: Perform all electrical for a remodel to convert the bathroom to a walk in closet and a bedroom to a bathroom. We added a steam shower and upgraded our service from 100 amp with a 150 amp panel to a 200 amp service and 200 amp panel. In addition we had to have our service moved from the backside of the house to the side of the house to meet current code.

Did not provide a quote and after I emailed him to ask for the status, he informed me that he decided to pass on the job. I don't care if someone passes on a job, but he should have informed me rather then let me wait over a week for a quote that wasn't gonna come.

They were fine. They came out really quickly but they couldn't diagnose what my problem was. They were responsive. They took me seriously. They were thorough. The thing that was a bit frustrating was it took a while to make the appointment. They e-mailed the invoice but they didn't have a way of paying online.

A couple months ago I requested a bid to rewire parts of my house, but they responded that they weren't interested unless the house was gutted and all the wall and ceiling coverings were removed. This seemed like a lot to ask for rewiring, and it was surprisingly since none of the other electrical contractors I contacted and subsequently received bids from requested such. At any rate, I decided recently to ask them for a bid to have the old "knob and tube" wiring behind a few ceiling lights replaced, and again they said that they do not do this sort of work. This was really odd since essentially all old houses in the area have/had this sort of wiring since it was the standard until recent years. Again, all the other electrical contractors I've requested bids from had no problems bidding on and working on this wiring. Obviously, they were not at all accommodating or interested in my business, so I will not call them again. There are very good and helpful electricians and electrical contractors in Portland, but this company wasn't one of them for me.
Description of Work: Requested a bid to rewire part of my house a couple months ago and again recently to replace some old wiring behind a couple ceiling light fixtures, but both times they responded that they essentially were not interested.

Response from Callahan Electric
Not exactly sure why I am getting this bad review. I looked at the job and let the client know that in order for me and my crew to do the wiring certain things would have to happen. The house was in really rough shape. Then, a second request came in to remove old knob and tube wiring which we do not do. I don't think a company should be negatively reviewed for not wanting to do work.

We were about to have the siding replaced on our house and the siding contractor mentioned that the service coming into the house appeared to be a mess and should be cleaned up to avoid unnecessary holes in the new siding. We called Steve Callahan after checking Angie's List, and met with him within a couple days. He identified the problem outside the house, and also pointed out the need to replace the breaker panel (an old Pacific Electric panel that was too small and unsafe). Steve and his crew coordinated with the siding contractor and cleaned up the outside service mess, and replaced the panel. We also asked him to set up power for a hot tub. They were professional and worked quickly. We would gladly work with Steve again and recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Replaced breaker panel. Resolved exterior service issues. Installed power for a hot tub.

I initially called 4 electricians. Callahan Electric was only one to schedule a visit to check out my project. Steve does excellent work and is very easy to work with. I first reached out to Steve Callahan 1-1/2 years ago about installing a buried service entrance and feed to a subpanel in a new garage. He explained the real cost and values of what I wanted to do and showed me how I could perform the work myself because I have some basic electrical skills. Then, this year, I new Steve was the right guy to get my existing low elevation aerial feed replaced with one that connected to top of 2 - story house and met current codes. He worked with my siding contractor to sequence the work smoothly and set the new meter base and service connector on one day. Then, following day, Steve showed up with 3 guys and rewired the main service panel to serve as a sub-panel, run service entrance through concealed route in ceiling, and completed service switch with Pacific Power on same day. Switch over was no inconvenience at all! Steve shows commitment, practical skill, and integrity that I you find in other electricians. City of Portland inspector quickly approved Steve's work upon inspection.
Description of Work: Steve and his crew replaced my electric service meter, service entrance to main panel, and coordinated with Pacific Power to replace aerial feed, and had work done in 1 day.

Callahan came first as a recommendation on Next Door and then I looked them up here - all A ratings. With that I called and Steve made an appointment to come out a few days later. It was a short visit as this was a very straightforward job and later that afternoon he emailed the quote over. About a week later Pete and Tyler showed up in the agreed upon window and efficiently installed the two ceiling fans. Steve would definitely be a first call for any future electrical work we need done. Professional, communicative and responsive.

Purchased 1969 ranch house. Majority of wiring needed to be replaced which required electricians to navigate attic. Panel rewired and brought up to code. All baseboard removed and replaced with 5 Cadet heaters. Several outlets replaced and a new outlet installed in garage. One electrician returned after drywall completed and finished installing new outlets. Electricians were always on time, worked efficiently, and were friendly and professional. The owner, Steve Callahan, periodically checked in with me. I have several projects that I would like done in the future and I plan to use Callahan Electric.

Callahan Electric was a sub to Turnkey construction (see separate review). They installed all of the lighting and electrical. These guys show up in force and knocked it out very quickly. They roughed all the lights and outlets and gave us time to see if we wanted to add or remove. We added undermount cabinet lighting last minute and they accommodated. They also came back and switched out a light that we didn't like for no charge. Very professional and punctual. I would recommend them to friends and family.

We were purchasing a home that had too many wires going into the panel (the panel was too small for the house) in addition to some faulty wiring of outlets throughout the home. It went really well, mentioned I'd seen him on Angie's List and that I liked he was from the 'hood. Turns out his daughter is in my kid's class in school. He was earlier than originally scheduled (he had called and asked if that was okay) but a little later than he thought he would be because of the kid's parade in Hollywood. He was quick and efficient and charged a fair price. Would use him again with no hesitation.

I called Callahan Electric to get an estimate to upgrade my 20 amp water heater circuit to a 30 amp circuit. I had already called several other companies who were either not interested in this small job or who provided estimates that were excessive and unrealistic for this simple job. My hot water heater is only about 12 feet from my circuit breaker panel and running a new conduit and wires was required for the job. When Steve arrived to estimate the job he agreed that it was a simple straight forward job, estimated the job would take about 2 hours and agreed to complete the project for time and materials. He also provided a 20 amp "Pushmatic" breaker which other companies told me were no longer available and impossible to find. I told Steve that I was under a time constraint as I was having a new hot water heater installed in just a couple of days. Steve made a phone call and told me that one of his electricians would arrive in a few minutes which is what happened and two hours later the job was complete. Tyler, the electrician, was very efficient in managing his time to stay within the budget. I am very please with my experience with Callahan Electric and will be calling them again the next time I need an electrician.
