I was very pleased with the quality of work and service completed by Randy and his company. I wouldn't go to anyone else moving forward.  They showed up when they said they would and did a superb job on the floors, which was great considering they had to troubleshoot a few issues with the floor.  Their price estimate was also $2,000 cheaper than a competitor's bid.

I bought a house that had unfortunately been occupied by "animal rescuers" for about 30 years.  I spent three days tearing out the soiled wall-to-wall carpet, only to discover the original hardwood floors underneath had also been heavily damaged by animal urine.  I called Randy Bateson, who had refinished a hardwood floor for me in a different house several years earlier, and explained my situation.  He came over that same day to examine the floors.  He sanded some of the most heavily-stained areas, and determined that although he could improve the appearance of this floor by sanding, applying a darker stain and refinishing, it would look (and smell) a lot better if I had the entire hardwood floor taken out and replaced.
*
I agreed that the entire floor should be replaced, so we signed a contract and Randy showed up the following Monday to tear out the old floor.  Later in the morning he called me at work with bad news:  The entire subfloor was streaked with animal urine that had soaked down between the old hardwood floor boards over the years.  Opening up the floors had re-exposed the urine, and the associated smells..  Although I'd left a couple of bottles of "Natures Miracle" (an enzyme that neutralizes animal urine) for Randy to use on trouble spots, the damage was far too extensive for that.  Randy indicated that in his 30+ years of working with hardwood floors, he'd never seen anything like it.  Randy told me not to worry though, he would go to a janitorial supply store and buy gallon-sized bottles of the enzyme that neutralizes animal urine/waste.  Randy then used a paint roller to roll the enzyme throughout the house where the urine had soaked through the hardwood floors.  He used a paint brush to get between the subfloor boards and under the walls.  He told me I should roll out another coat of enzyme after I got off work that evening, which I did.  It took a few days for the enzymes to do their job and for subfloor to dry, but the difference was amazing.  The animal urine smell was completely eliminated from the house.
*
Due to the delay to deal with the animal urine, Randy worked through the following Saturday and Sunday to finish installing the floors.  He did a great job, completing two bedrooms, a hallway, a living room, dining area, and a diagonal transition into the kitchen, and all of the floor moulding.  Notably, Randy makes all of his money on his labor and does not mark up the cost of materials.  Homeowners pay for the materials directly from the supplier.  These new floors gleam and add huge value to my house.

As a side note, on Sunday 4/28/2013 while Randy was finishing up his work, my 85-year-old mother and her caregiver came over to visit the house.  My mother's health was quite poor at that point, so I was surprised she could make the trip.  I asked Randy if he and his work partner could turn off their saws and stop work while my mother was visiting, which of course they agreed to do.  When my mother last visited the house she could walk up the front stairs, but by 4/28 she was confined to a wheelchair..  When she arrived, her caregiver and I were at the foot of the stairs preparing to pick up the wheelchair when Randy and his work partner picked it up for us and carried my mother into the house.  She had a lovely visit and admired the new floors and other work I'd done with the house.  Randy and his partner were friendly and engaging with my mother during her visit, and then they carried her back down the stairs before going back to their work.  This visit was very important to me, as my mother died three days later, but I have the memory of her last visit and how much she enjoyed seeing the new floors.  Randy Bateson went above and beyond the call of duty on this job and exceeded all of my expectations.  He took care of me and did a great job at a fair price.  It is my pleasure to write my recommendation for him on AngiesList.
