I told them that I was leaving on a
trip in a month and I wanted to know if it would be worth it to repair the lens
or if it would be better to buy a new one to take on my trip. I said I
wasn't interested in paying over $200.00 for the repair.
The person at the counter said that
it would be $90.00 to have the tech look at it, and if it was an easy repair
then that should take care of it. If they had to replace a part then
they would call me with an estimate for additional parts and labor.
$90.00 seemed expensive but I agreed
to have the tech look at it. I was given an estimate of one week for a
reply.
I paid a $40.00 deposit.
After one week I had not heard
anything from them, so my wife called to check on the status. They said
the tech had not had a chance to look at it yet.
I called back the following week (now 2 weeks later) and asked about the
progress. Again, I was told that the tech had not looked at
it. I told the person on the phone that I didn't want to get a call a few
days before my trip with them telling me that the lens is not done, or they had
to order a part and it won't be ready. He assured me that he would be in
touch soon and let me know what the progress was. I asked if I cancelled
now before the tech looked at it would I get my deposit back he said he did not
know.
My wife called back one week later (now the 3rd week), and told them that the
lens has to be done by 07/29/15 to take on our family vacation. She was
told that they would rush the repair to meet our deadline, because even at this
point no one had looked at the lens.
On 07/27/2015 my wife was told that
the lens had a broken part and they would have to order a replacement, and it
would take about another week to repair.
This insured that the lens would not be available for our family trip,
which was the only reason why I getting the repair done at this time. My wife was told that the part would be
$45.00.
I called back and approved the
repair.
At this point we left for our trip
without the lens. We returned a week
later still no word from them.
My wife called and was told that
they were working on it now.
The first call we received from them
was on 08/12/15 saying the lens was ready for pick up.
I went to pick up the lens on
08/13/15 and was charged $60.00 for the part and an additional charge for labor of
$55.00 bringing the total charge to $205.00.
This is exactly what I expressed I
did not want to have happen.
I repeatedly told them that I wanted
the lens for the trip, and I didn?t want to spend a lot on the repair.
I was very disappointed with every
part of this transaction.
After a long telephone conversation
the manager agreed to refund $35.00 off of the total charge.
One odd thing is that he offered
several times to buy the lens from us, which we did not understand. We felt like he was going to resell the lens
to someone else.
Again, the whole experience was
awful.
I spent a while having a very informative chat with Jordan. He suggested a few different settings in my camera and taught me about some limits my camera might have once you put it on a tripod and use a remote, etc., etc. I had done some testing prior to taking it in and we looked at those test shots together. He even offered to review other pictures I thought were concerning via email and see if he could make suggestions. Turns out he was right on the idea that I was reaching a diffraction limit in my camera and once I was above a certain ISO the noise from the (not really that much) higher ISO combined with the diffraction limit made for poor images in my opinion.
Jordan saved me a lot of time and money and I learned a lot during our conversation. He is very knowledgeable and I would definitely recommend paying them a visit if you are having any issues with your camera.
We are pretty rough on our cameras and have used Advance Camera Repair several times in the past. They have always done a great job. I wouldn't take our cameras anywhere else.
