They then did the porch work, which was generally fine, but some of the details were a bit sloppy, and we asked for some fixes, which they did resulting in some improvement. It was OK, but we weren't as happy with the porch work as we were with the insulation/ventilation.
They were nice to work with and very reliable in showing up when they said they would.
I found it impressive that women made up all but one person in the Abacus work crew. The one who was not female was the supervisor, Billy, who was a marvel -- he was always cheerful, on time (except once when he called to explain why), and good about seeing that the young women did their jobs without being officious. I could ask him any questions I had or talk to him about anything I didn't think was done to my satisfaction. He answered me straightforwardly in a manner I could understand, and he made sure anything that wasn't right was fixed. In addition, one of the co-owners made regular visits to check on the work. I particularly appreciated that -- I didn't feel I had to crawl into the attic or the crawlspace to check for myself. I knew he was very interested in their doing a good job and that he knew better than I what to look for.
Not unusual for Portland, the work was done during the rain (some transporting of materials to the lower floor of the house had to be done outside in the rain) and at least one day, it was cold enough that the deck to the house entrance had frozen rain on it. The job was not held up. It was finished in a reasonable amount of time. I would definitely hire Abacus again.
